UK police arrest LulzSec member Topiary

18-year-old claims alias of key member.

UK police have arrested an 18-year-old man linked to "criminal activity" by hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec.

The man's alleged online nickname is Topiary, who is considered a key public figure of LulzSec.

His real human name wasn't given.

The police's central e-crime unit arrested Topiary in a planned operation as part of an investigation into DDOS attacks against international business and intelligence agencies.

Topiary was cuffed under Section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act and Section 1 of the Criminal Law Act 1977. Topiary was arrested in the Shetland Islands, where those ponies come from, at a residential address.

A search of Topiary's house is under way.

Meanwhile, over in Lincolnshire, a 17-year-old male is being quizzed under caution by police in connection with Topiary's arrest.

UK police arrested 19-year-old Ryan Cleary in June as part of the same investigation. Cleary used to belong to hacker group Anonymous, but broke off to form a splinter group due to disillusionment with the group's leadership.

LulzSec was amalgamated back into the Anonymous folds at the end of June, after a 50-days hacking and DDOS spree.

Targets attacked during that time include video game companies Nintendo, Sony and Bethesda, and game services for Battlefield: Heroes, MineCraft and League of Legends.
