Study: XBL among safest social networks

Child-friendly default settings praised.

Xbox Live is one of the safest social networks for children, according to a recent European Commission study.

As reported by Gamasutra, alongside teen-friendly social network Habbo Hotel, Microsoft's console network was one of just two sites surveyed that make minors' personal profiles accessible only to their approved list of contacts as a default setting.

The other seven sites included in the report were Skyrock, Dailymotion, Windows Live, YouTube, Flickr, Stardoll and Yahoo! Pulse.

"Young people enjoy and derive great benefits from social networking online but are often not conscious enough of risks such as grooming," commented Neelie Kroes, VP of the European Commission for the Digital Agenda.

"Social networking sites need to take seriously their responsibilities towards these youngsters. I intend to address these issues later this year in a comprehensive strategy on making the internet a safer place for children through a combination of protective and empowerment measures."
