Pac-Man World 3 announced

Time for more classic ghostbusting with the little yellow fellow.

Everyone's favourite pill-popper turns 25 this year, and Namco is preparing to celebrate the occasion with the release of Pac-Man World 3 for Xbox, GameCube, PS2, PC and PSP.

The game sees Pac-Man mysteriously transported out of Pac-Village and into the Spectral Realm, home of the ghosts. Turns out evil genius Erwin is attempting to take over the world, and unsurprisingly it's up to our hero to do him over.

He'll meet all manner of old friends and long-time enemies along the way, apparently, and will even find himself forming some new alliances. You can also expect the usual collection of power pellets, pac-dots, pac-chains and assorted fruit along with new special moves, power-up smoothies and something called a Pactrometer. Plus you get to play as Pinky and Clyde, each with their own different abilities.

Pac-Man made his first appearance back in 1980, and has since been the inspiration for dozens of games and more than 400 products, from headbands and wristwatches to breakfast cereals and, er, air fresheners.

"Like all of us, Pac-Man has evolved over the years, changing with the times," said Toru Iwatani, otherwise known as Pac-Man's Dad. "People love Pac-Man because he's simple and cute and most important FUN," he ADDED.

Pac-Man World 3 is due for an autumn release in the States, and you can expect an appearance in Europe shortly after.
