US network ABC News is providing Sony PSP owners with news and information programmes, downloadable from the psp.connect.com website and stored on the handheld's Memory Stick.

There are currently two programmes available, each just under two minutes long. Cyber-Security focuses on the USA's moves to protect itself against possible cyber-attacks and looks at ways to prevent computer hacking, while Hybrid Cars features Wired magazine's Brenden Koerner discussing the new trend towards hybrid cars.

The programmes require 20MB and 17MB of Memory Stick storage space respectively. The PSP comes with a default 32MB stick, and Sony has long been expected to push sales of bigger capacity models wherever possible.

"Today, 99 per cent of people with PSPs are using it to play fantastic games," said Bernie Gershon, digital media group senior VP for ABC News. "But our view is that wherever there is a screen, there is a potential viewer of ABC news."

Other downloads currently available from fellow content providers Off the Fence, Speed Racer, Sony Pictures and Warren Miller Entertainment include wildlife and sports videos, cartoon shows and movie trailers.
