A senior Square Enix exec has told the Wall Street Journal that the company doesn't want Sony's PlayStation 3 to be the "overwhelming winner" in the contest for next-gen domination.

Senior VP Michihiro Sasaki told the Journal that Square Enix will be committing its attention equally across Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3. "We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them," he explained. "But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

Of course it's in any third-party publisher's interests not to rely on a single supplier, and a successful cross-platform market provides publishers with a much broader revenue base. But it's perhaps significant that Square Enix has been a long-time ally of Sony's hardware platforms ever since Final Fantasy VII appeared in all its CD-enabled CGI glory back on PSone.

When contacted by Eurogamer a Square Enix Europe spokesman was unable to provide further comment.
