Kojima predicts console-free future

Wants streaming games wherever you go.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has said he believes the future of games is free of consoles or other platforms, and users will be able to play games on networks wherever they are.

At a press conference publicising the imminent release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in Japan, reported by Reuters, Kojima said: "In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform.

"Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel - wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience."

Kojima's vision of internet gaming on demand will soon be a reality thanks to services like OnLive and GaiKai, although it may be some time before it lives up to his expectations - and certainly before such services kill off traditional gaming platforms.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan boss Hiroshi Kawano will certainly be hoping so. He was present for Kojima's comments and answered, "It's a bold prediction. We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge."
