HoloLens dev kits to launch in Q1 2016 for $3k

Project XRAY lets you shoot holographic robots in your home.

Microsoft's augmented reality headset HoloLens will have a dev kit available during Q1 of next year at the pricey sum of $3000 a pop.

On second thought, maybe my life doesn't need giant robot spiders bursting through my walls like the Kool-Aid Man.

As reported by Ars Technica, the announcement was made at Microsoft's Windows 10 device event today in New York.

These won't simply be available for any aspiring developer, however, as prospective customers will have to apply for them online. Further details on that will be revealed as the product gets closer to launch.

The development kits are reportedly similar to what we've seen demonstrated earlier this year. Last we heard, the HoloLens' was rigged with a x86 processor, 2GB RAM, 802.11ac, and a 60Hz refresh rate.

More excitingly, Microsoft showed off an example of how HoloLens could be used for gaming with a shooter tech demo called Project XRAY.

Project XRAY swarms the room you're in with robotic insect invaders. The HoloLens sensors allows the alien infestation to know the shape of your room, so they'll crawl over and around furniture. As demonstrated by Gizmodo in the following video, they even have advanced AI as they scheme to encroach you.

The player can don different holographic weapons too, so you needn't fend off this infestation with finger guns. Wielding a Mega Man-like holographic arm cannon, you can blast away at your mechanical foes and even use voice commands to spawn a shield or transform your armament into a "vortex mode" gravity gun that vacuums enemies towards you then lets you launch them at their comrades in a giant explosion. Neat!
