Digital FoundryThe making of Shadow of the Colossus on PS4

Digital Foundry talks tech - and more - with Bluepoint Games.

Now known as the 'masters of the remaster', Bluepoint Games has a well-earned, solid gold reputation for delivering some of the best current-gen - and indeed last-gen - ports of gaming's most beloved properties. From Metal Gear Solid to God of War, from Gravity Rush to the Uncharted trilogy, Bluepoint's work has been uniformly excellent across the years.

The question of fidelity and Shadow of the Colossus

Wanderer above the sea of textures.

Editor's note: Once a month we're lucky enough to be graced by the presence of Gareth Damian Martin, editor of Heterotopias, to share some proper insight before we go back and default to just writing about PUBG and Destiny 2. If you want to read more in-depth critical writing, you can find a Heterotopias bundle celebrating the zine's anniversary here.

Digital FoundryShadow of the Colossus is one of the best remakes of all time

Bluepoint's PS4 work honours the original while delivering state-of-the-art technology.

There's a reason why Team Ico's Shadow of the Colossus commands so much love and respect from the PlayStation audience. From a technical perspective, it pushed the PlayStation 2 hardware further than it had gone before, but it also delivered a special style and atmosphere that set it apart from anything else that had gone before. In essence, it was the type of game that only comes along very rarely - an experience that actually strengthens one's love for the gaming medium.

Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is a remake, not a remaster, says Shuhei Yoshida

Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is a remake, not a remaster, says Shuhei Yoshida

"What we're doing is showing how great the original work is, using today's technology."

The recently revealed PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus is not just a remastering of the old game, but a full on remake, according to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

Yoshida confirmed this in an interview with Japanese gaming outlet Famitsu (translated via Siliconera).

"It is a remake. The game content is the same as the original version, but all the assets are being remade," he said.

Ico's original script has been translated

Two-thirds of its lines went unused.

Fumito Ueda's classic PS2 fantasy adventure Ico originally had significantly more dialogue prior to its release. Fans at The Cutting Room Floor data-mined the game's files to discover that 77 of the game's 115 lines of text went unused. Now, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia translator Aria Tanner has offered her own translation to this omitted dialogue.

The quest for Shadow of the Colossus' last big secret

From the archive: The group of secret seekers looking to unearth Team Ico's final mystery.

Editor's note: As if we'd let the PS4 outing for Shadow of the Colossus pass by without returning to this - an article that's been republished as many times as the game has been remastered, at least. Craig Owens' piece was first published back in 2013 (and if you wondered what Craig was up to himself, he's at Rocksteady working on whatever mystery the Arkham Knight developer is up to next).

Both Collections also have optional control schemes when using Vita Remote Play. These map the R2 and L2 buttons to the rear touch pad.

Shuei Yoshida tweets a picture of it.

Sony's "almost ready with a patch" for ICO HD that will enable Remote Play on PlayStation Vita, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said today.

He tweeted a picture of the game running on Vita, and wrote: "I was play testing ICO HD Remote Play on PS Vita. We are almost ready with a patch. Beautiful on OLED. More info soon."

The Tokyo Game Show is two weeks away, and would be an obvious event around which to release such a patch.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 exclusives need "quality" not quantity

Bemoans Sony "selling old franchises with HD remakes".

Xbox 360-exclusive games need to have "quality and impact", Microsoft Studios exec Phil Spencer has insisted.

Creating Xbox 360-only games and IP is about more than the "number of releases in a year", Spencer continued, explaining Microsoft's strategy on securing exclusives for the platform.

"Creating core IP, as many first-and third-parties have seen over the years, isn't an easy thing," Spencer told GameInformer (via GamesIndustry.biz). "I went through the process of creating Gears with Epic and I know the sweat, time, and effort that went into it."

The Last Guardian: Sony confirms Fumito Ueda's departure

Is "committed to completing" the project.

Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda has left Sony, the PlayStation manufacturer has confirmed.

Ueda is finishing PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last Guardian on a contract basis, and is "committed to completing" the project, Sony said in a statement issued to Gamasutra.

Saturday Soapbox: Past Remasters

Saturday Soapbox: Past Remasters

Are remakes preserving the classics of yesteryear or are they obliterating them?

Games have an incredibly complicated relationship with their past. This is an industry that's fixated with the future, but too often it's one that holds its history at arm's length.

We're embarrassed by what's gone before, it seems, sometimes going as far as to compartmentalize older games under the horribly banal banner of retro gaming, a tag that's as pointless as it's revealing of the disdain we hold for anything that's over five years old.

With indie gaming re-appropriating the aesthetic of the 80s and early 90s, there has at least been a bridge built between now and then; titles like Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV or Brian Provinciano's Retro City Rampage show that there weren't any retro games after all - they were, as they always have been, just games painted with fewer pixels.

I've often said that I will always prefer a new game over a remake when it comes to naming our game of the week, but this is the week I lay that rule to rest. The choice between two of today's releases made a nonsense of it.

Out This Week - 30/09/11

FIFA 12! Resi: CV! Ico Collection!

EA Sports' annual football giant FIFA 12 lands this week for every platform under the sun. Versions for 3DS, DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360 arrive in an otherwise quiet week for retail releases, as other titles stay clear of the beautiful game.

Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection HD

If Ico and Shadow and the Colossus were novels, they'd be getting the Penguin Modern Classics treatment around about now. They'd be done up in paperback with a jarringly appropriate bit of art stuck on the front, while inside you'd get an introductory essay with a name like, "Shadow of the Beast: Manichean belief structures and Agro the horse", written by Tony Tanner - if he wasn't already dead. You'd plod through that intro because you wanted to get your money's worth, and after all that, you might end up with the strange feeling that there weren't too many reasons left to re-read the actual stories anymore.

Luckily, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are video games, and video games have their own impulses when it comes to curatorship. In Sony's new HD collection, both of Fumito Ueda's classics are reborn in high resolution and 7.1 surround sound with improved frame rates and it's left to the player, rather than Tony Tanner, to unravel what they think of the games themselves. Instead of scholarly essays, there are downloadable themes - one for each game - and making-of videos (none of which we've been sent in our review copy, alas). Instead of the unusual cover image, there are trophies and stereoscopic 3D for both titles.

Best of all, there are still plenty of reasons left to play these games again. Let's check them out.
