Gameloft answers game cloning charge

"There is maybe one new idea a year."

Gameloft, the publisher behind derivative mobile games like the Halo-esque N.O.V.A series and the Uncharted-aping Shadow Guardian, has answered accusations that it knowingly 'borrows' other developers' game templates.

CEO Michel Guillemot told IGN that many titles released today are just variations on a handful of gameplay ideas and themes.

"The videogame industry has always played around a limited number of themes. There is maybe one new idea a year," he claimed.

He added that Gameloft offers casual mobile gamers who don't own consoles experiences that they would not otherwise get to enjoy.

"If a type of game is not available, then you should make it. The damaging thing is if you do a bad expression of a good idea," he explained.

Take a look at the trailers for Shadow Guardian and the rather familiar-looking Modern Combat: Domination below and decide for yourself whether Guillemot has a point.
