Editor's blog: Eurogamer at GDC

You're pretty smart. You know stuff. So you probably know that the annual Game Developers Conference kicks off today, and runs all week at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Well, Eurogamer is out in force as usual, and we'll be bringing you live text coverage of two of the big keynotes.

Let's get those out of the way first. They are:

  • Satoru Iwata - "Discovering New Development Opportunities"
    Wednesday, 25th March, 9am PST (4pm GMT)

According to GDC's organisers, "In his keynote address, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata will talk about Nintendo's role in creating better tools and bringing opportunities for developers to introduce their innovative ideas to a marketplace that is increasingly willing and eager to embrace new game design possibilities." With the DSi out in the West in just over a week, and Wii over two years on the market, hopefully he'll also drop some hints about the future.

  • Hideo Kojima - "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible"
    Thursday, 26th March, 10.30am PST (5.30pm GMT)

From the GDC site: "Kojima's keynote will focus on conquering various development obstacles with creative game design, using the driving game design philosophies behind the Metal Gear series as reference. The address...marks Kojima's debut appearance at the GDC." He's a man who requires little introduction, and it should be fascinating listening to his insights into the development of Konami's MGS games, not least last year's Guns of the Patriots.

You're probably thinking that the times look wrong. According to Eurogamer Time Monitor and sometime-MMO Editor Oli Welsh, the gap is seven hours, even though it's usually eight, because of differences in daylight saving time crossovers. Punching rats, studying timezones - Oli gets all the cool jobs.

Away from the keynotes, Eurogamer will also be popping its many heads into a variety of sessions throughout the week, interviewing various developers and playing a few games behind closed doors. There may also be shopping, knowing Ellie, who bought a slate cheese board last year and no doubt hopes to follow it up with some sort of graphite bread bin or an aluminium spatula.
