Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fastest-selling Nintendo home console game in Europe ever

Some good resultimates.

We already knew it was doing well from the UK figures released last week, but it seems Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's success knows no bounds.

An announcement from Nintendo UK's Twitter account states the title has broken the company's record as the fastest-selling Nintendo home console game in Europe - not just of this generation but of all time. This has got me wondering what the fastest-selling handheld game is - and isn't the Switch technically both things? I need answers, Nintendo!

In its very first weekend, Smash Bros. Ultimate sold more physical copies in the UK than Mario, Zelda, and the combined sales of Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Eeevee. Sales were 300 per cent higher than its Smash Bros. Wii U predecessor, but given the relative installed bases of the two consoles, that's hardly a surprise.

Over on the other side of the pond, Smash Bros. Ultimate became the fastest-selling Switch title released so far - shifting a whopping 3 million units in 11 days. As highlighted by our sister site Gamesindustry.biz, Nintendo is also the overall top-selling publisher of 2018 (according to data firm NPD).

It's a richly deserved performance by Smash Bros. Ultimate, which earned itself a glitzy Essential badge in Eurogamer's Smash Bros. Ultimate review.
