Although PC owners may have felt a bit hard done by with Grand Theft Auto III, having enjoyed the previous two instalments first and foremost before taking second place in line behind the PS2, the possibility of the ever-bustling GTA community throwing up modifications and other downloadable perks were a definite plus. Even if the game itself ran like a dog on most hardware.

Well, the fruits of one of these amateur mod makers' labours have now seen the light of day in the shape of GTA3MTA - Multi Theft Auto. Available from this website, the mod enables previously hashed-out areas of multi-player code penned but then suppressed by Rockstar North née DMA Design, and the latest release is allegedly quite playable.

We haven't had the chance to try it out ourselves yet, and wouldn't advocate people doing so without considering the potential risks - this is, after all, buggy, alpha code which is liable to crash. If that doesn't put you off though, get some Multi Theft Auto and let us know how you get on!
