Capcom has some explaining to do in the US after it went back on its word to sell the GameCube ports of Resident Evil 2 and 3 at a budget price.

US stores have been taking pre-orders for both titles this week, but instead of the tempting sub $20 price expected, GameCube owners will have to fork out a whopping $39.99 for these virtually unenhanced conversions.

But Resident Evil die hards (geddit?) in Europe are expected to be treated slightly better. A Capcom representative told Eurogamer today that Resident Evil 2 and 3 would be available at a budget price, although a final decision had yet to be made.

PAL release dates for the ageing pair is expected to be May 16, with Resident Evil: Code Veronica currently occupying a vague "pre Christmas" date.

But never mind unoptimised, rather pointless ports, check out our first impressions of the forthcoming Resident Evil Zero, due for release here on March 7th. A full review will be posted closer to the street date.
