IGI 2 Mutiplayer Beta goes public

Are you going in?

IGI 2 fans unable to get into the recent closed Beta test can now sample some team based multiplayer action here as those nice chaps at Codemasters have decided to allow members of the public to join in the fragging frolics currently going on.

The PC game is in its final stages of development, with a 14th February release date for the stealthy FPS spouted at us today.

Apparently, the multiplayer gameplay has been touted as "a major highpoint in the game"; and the recent closed Beta test pulled in over 100,000 players.

The multiplayer demo is a clash between the IGI (Institute for Geotactical Intelligence) operatives and the Conspiracy terrorist group, and gamers will be duking it out on the stealthy "Timberland" map, an old mineral plant that the Conspiracy is using as a cover to extract uranium for covert weapons manufacturing.

The map supports up to 16 players online and 32 players on LAN, across the two teams, but has no upper limit, and features full in-game chat functionality.

Apparently, the style of the multiplayer gameplay "reflects the stealth and tactical approach of the single-player game", with reconnaissance elements providing "a new style of FPS multiplayer gaming" which blend "stealth and surveillance with action and gunplay".

Terrain is also said to be a big part of IGI 2, with the surrounding used in a "dynamic" way to "make for exciting and tense gameplay".

Find out for yourselves here or wait for the full release, out on PC on February 14.
