The folks over at Checkout have an interview with Daikatana's John Romero. In the interview Romero tackles a few burning subjects.

Firstly he talks about the differences between his game and others in the same genre "you travel with two sidekick characters through four different time periods within a large story. It's not your typical, basic shooter or team-based/mission-based shooter either"

He talks about the history of the first person shooter, starting with the legendary Wolfenstein 3D "getting a 3D picture to move at any kind of speed was an amazing feat and Carmack pulled it off. All we had to do at that point was make a game as great as the engine it was built on" He goes on and speaks about where the genre is going, and its well worth you going over there for a read.
