ShopTo puts Kinect at £129.99

Claims device out on 19th Nov.

UK retailer ShopTo has claimed Microsoft's motion sensor Kinect will carry an RRP of £129.99, and be released on Friday, 19th November.

ShopTo pre-orders are open now with the price trimmed slightly to £124.86.

No other major UK retailer - Play, Amazon, GAME, HMV - has a price or date listed for Kinect.

ShopTo hasn't responded to our request for comment.

Microsoft has yet to announced an official price for Kinect, despite the company's own shop listing a $149 tag.

Kinect will be released on 4th November in the US and the rest of the world thereafter.

The tech is indeed interesting, but at that price it's all a bit too 'PSPgo' for me.

Unless there are 2 amazing games bundelled will be a bit of a flop i fear,
  • TeaFiend #9 2 years ago

Believable tbh. Seeing as they were talking $150 stateside.

None of you were expecting a decent exchange rate, right?
  • Stuz359 #10 2 years ago

Not sure what MS wants to achieve with Kinect. I like the tech but the likely price point for a family wanting to buy into it is £130 plus at least £160 for an X360 (RRP). I don't see what it offers over the Wii to justify the price to the average family.
  • Steroyd #11 2 years ago

With the £ tanked it was semi expected... but one also fears what will happen when the VAT goes up as well.
  • BillyBrush #12 2 years ago

THEY'VE NOT ANNOUNCED / SET THE PRICE YET

so stop moaning, retailers speculate on what they can offer it for, Shopto are expecting to be able to sell it for no more than this, so £129 is now your maximum expected price

*unless the shop have small print saying they can increase the price*

It will end up being $79 doller, that's my bet
  • lucky_jim #13 2 years ago

So the tech spec info from play.com shows the specs are massively cut back from what was originally demonstrated, and the price is set way, way, way the wrong side of mental. I'm not paying £130 for a sub-VGA camera.

Shame, I thought it was really promising at first.
  • Eraysor #14 2 years ago

Nobody buy it, then the price will have to dive bomb. I remember the Eyetoy and a game cost no more than the price of a single PS2 game back in the day...
  • bad09 #15 2 years ago

130 note for waggle is absurd, but the casual crowd this thing is aimed at will love it and snap it up even at that price, just look at the Wii balance board they flew off the shelves and were 80-90 quid!
  • BAM! #16 2 years ago

    That's about £100 too much.
  • Geordiemp #17 2 years ago

the initial success depends on what game is bundled.

If they bundle the dance game and market the hell out of it, it could sell like hot cakes to teen girls and be the next big craze.

Who knows, not interesting to people on this board, , but neither is barbie or my little pony, but both made someone billionaires.

If MS are stupid and its £ 130 for the bundle witha crap game and another £ 40 for dance then its more difficult.
  • Doctor_What #18 2 years ago

  • Machetazo #19 2 years ago

The date seems about right, and they list an RRP. For which they must have received some kind of guidance. Even if they bundle a Kinect game, that price only becomes barely acceptable, at still a stretch. As an accessory, for Kinect to cost as much the console needed also, to run it, that's just ridiculous! (arms wavy novelty silliness or no. :p ) DC bundle I would think has got to be a no-brainer, I agree with that, geordie.

Save your time thinking of amusing comments on this one. If shopto are correct, then this is already the funniest headline of the year!
  • Darren #21 2 years ago

Kinect needs to be £60 or less to have mass market appeal IMO and if it really is £125+ then I'd imagine it'll bomb. You can buy an Xbox 360 console for less than that and it comes with a controller!

Although it's not confirmed, given Microsoft's history of overpricing peripherals I suspect it won't cost less than £100 and I still think that would be too pricey for what is essentially little more than a glorified webcam. It's not like the device has its own specialised hardware chip, that idea was dropped in favour of the 360 doing the processing to keep costs down (or so I've read).

So why does Kinect cost so much? :?
  • Toothball #22 2 years ago

I'd probably get one, but I suspect all my money will be going on Rock Band 3 instruments later this year. It'll give me a chance to see what happens with it.

  • IronGiant #25 2 years ago

  • gallow #26 2 years ago

You can buy a Wii for that price.
  • Redeye #27 2 years ago

If Kinect is indeed to emerge blinking into the sunlight for such a laughable price, then (doffing my home-made PachterHat™) I predict that MS is looking at having to eat a colossal slice of failcake...mass-market adoption in the UK at that price is tantamount to a pipe-dream, and nothing more.

However, seeing as there's still nothing official as yet, I await further developments with a mix of amusement, apprehension, amazement and trapped wind.

EDIT: And my personal neg-monkey strikes again, forsaking logic and common sense in favour of being a cock. Bravo.

Thing is, at that price there'll be few early adopters. Then once the games hit and they're shown to suck ass, no one will actually buy it. It's a no win. Should go in at a £50 price range.
  • Nighthawk_08 #34 2 years ago

Pass. If they make kinect control normal games, like gears, halo, splinter cell I prob still wouldn't buy it because I'll be standing up all night long. I game weekend nights and have monster gaming sessions. Sometimes 9 hours plus ( nerd I know ) but i just cant stand up all that time. Unless u can control sat down in a similar way too move then it's not for me. It's cool tech though for dashboard, DVDs and tv but not gaming at this point.
  • Steroyd #35 2 years ago

130 note for waggle is absurd, but the casual crowd this thing is aimed at will love it and snap it up even at that price, just look at the Wii balance board they flew off the shelves and were 80-90 quid!

But the "casual" crowd don't own a Xbox 360, and I don't see how they can bundle Kinect in with the console at a decent impulse-y price like the Wii.

If the price stands then it's more geared towards hardcore gamers with a family, and even then it will be hard to sell to that type of person at it's current price.

As much as I'm excited by the possibilities offered by Kinect, MS really, really needs to show some seriously sexy games for me to get this at launch. Frankly pretty surprised that they've gone for a pricetag this high - didn't they learn from Sony's "people should be happy to bleed their wallets to get a PS3"-fuckup?
  • Dolly #37 2 years ago

Fanboy or not, you would have to be a fucking moron to try and defend MS on this one.

I predict mass bonfires around the country, with all retailers forced to burn their 30 remaining boxes of Tony Hawks Ride to make room on the bottom shelf for these things.

  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #38 2 years ago

Something I seem to be saying more and more recently, but WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKNG MICROSOFT.

Kinect should now be considered a dead peripheral if that is the price its launched at.

I wouldn't mind but they couldn't even give the camera a 60fps mode like the PS3 EyeToy which might of at least helped with the fucking LAG! Jesus.

If this had a 60fps mode and included a basic pointing wand with a analog stick and a trigger on for more precises games AND was bundled with Kinect Sports for £129 then I'd buy it. But it doesnt, so I wont.
  • Bremenacht #39 2 years ago

Oh, if they're selling it at that sort of price, we can expect a tonne of marketing to help convince us it's good value. I'm really looking forward to that. Let's see, who could they use... Nintendo have the Redknapps, Tess Daly and a bunch of others, so..... Eureka!: Ian Wright!

  • brseg #44 2 years ago

Sorry to sound like another whinger, but nobody is going to just pick up a kinect at that price. And anyway, you'd just pick up a wii instead, as people already said. If xmas sales are poor, devs will not get onboard. it could die horribly, and some heads roll at MS :( From the E3 stuff I watched, I'd pick one up for ~50 quid I think. Unless they are hiding away more killer apps - but with a bunch of wii clones it will die.

Has any insider revealed the manufacturing cost of kinect? Perhaps it already is a loss leader...

    Ctrl V:

This sounds more and more shit the more information we get about it. First, the price; £129 is far too much considering you need a 360 too. Then the spec getting revised downwards; that can only be a bad thing, limiting its potential even further. Then you look at the games announced so far. Almost all of them look like a big back of shit.

Damn it Microsoft, this could have been great.
  • captainrentboy #48 2 years ago

I really was intrigued by Kinect and would have possibly bought it at a lower price. It is too much to spend on what is a gamble (I haven't ever used motion controlled games before).

How much would it have been with the onboard chip, or whatever it was? I thought it was taken out to save money and thus lower our cost? £129.99 is way too much. I cannot see them capturing any kind of market away from Nintendo at that price...

Other than the price the worst thing is you can only play it standing up.
Also the types of games it can play are limited to ones you move your hands or body.
No buttons means it really is extremely limited.
  • SternCat #55 2 years ago

I'm kind of interested in Kinect. I think Child of Eden, Dance Central, and Your Shape all look like they could be good.

I think this price is a mistake though, and Microsoft should have taken a loss on Kinect in order to get the install base up early. If they don't then it could easily just end up a gimmick, and 3rd party developers won't develop any games for it.

I imagine they will just have a high price when it comes out, for the early adopter crowd who will buy it anyway, then they'll drop soon after to sell it to everyone else.

    nope out

don't wanna stand up playing racing games anyway(Joyride)
  • DiamondIce #59 2 years ago

I have read a few articles about the games but I swear I have never read about how you accelerate and brake in racing games. How is that done with Kinect?
  • groovychainsaw #60 2 years ago

At that price, they are competing directly with the Wii in the popular conciousness, basically same price, same type of games. But the Wii has far more, including some 10/10 nintendo games. One or two launch games for Kinect look good (and waving dashboard control has a strangely alluring appeal), but not for the price of a rival console?! I can't imagine this price is accurate (although the 'RRP' suggests they're getting their info from somewhere official-ish). If it is, then it will be dead at birth, they'll have a tiny proportion of the xbox owner's market and they'll never get third parties on board. Much like the eye-toy, it will lead to one first-party game coming out every 6 months or so, and thats it. cheaper, and who knows. I'd consider it up to about £79, ideally with something bundled. Beyond that though, can't really justify it.

Reminds me of the PSPGO, potentially a good idea, but killed by a combination of ridiculous price and a complete lack of support/innovation in content.

  • mingster #61 2 years ago

I presume the only way to accelrate or brake is move forward or backwards with your body or hands.
The lag will make it pointless though and racing games won't be viable for this technology.
  • ignatiusjreilly #62 2 years ago

    @DiamondAce

There has only been one racing game shown for Kinect I think - Joy Ride - and in that there is no accelerate or brake, it's done for you. Like a racing game for a touch-screen phone I guess.
  • ckyman2 #63 2 years ago

to brake: swing your willy in a clockwise circular movement

to accelerate: swing your willy in a anti-clockwise circular movement

If they are pricing it at $149.99 in America and 129.99 here, well Im just feeling a tad ripped off unless its a bundle of at least 2 or 3 games then a day one purchase has just turned into a 'when they put it on sale' purchase, tis a shame.
  • brseg #67 2 years ago

Yeah, was just thinking the same about racing games etc.
When watching the original natal hype (where they showed that driving game) I was imagining that at least one target customer would be those who play racing games but never invested in a wheel. But since then, the original 'natal can do 1:1 lag-free magic' hype has all fallen away. Cant even sit down to use now?!

(I dont mean driving with thin air, maybe some simple wheel that kinect could read… lag free of course. Couldve had accel/brake by reading positions on back of wheel maybe. aint gonna happen now anyway).

  • Kanselier #70 2 years ago

Come on now lads, officially there is no price announced. It may very well be that the Kinect pricing at/by retailers is for a package: for example Kinect + 3 games. However, this set is not officially announced, so retailers can not put that package online. Probably someone at MS marketing department used the word "Kinect" and the number "149" in one sentence during a meeting which lead the shops putting those two together on a website, and the press and consumer raging.

Think about it, 149 for a controller is silly. You know it, I know it and I am sure Microsoft know it.

edit: I just read the "ShopTo asks for lower Kinect pricing" and there it says "Last week Microsoft popped Kinect on its own online store priced $149, despite spokesperson Aaron Greenberg's repeated assertions that the $149 price tag put forward by US retailers is "purely speculative".". Uh oh, guess 149 is more or less the official price. Ouch, count me out unless it comes with an X360.

To put it in perspective, how many people have paid over that for the full rock band or guitar hero setup ... something which in the grand scheme of things has far less long term use. Heck 2 guitars would cost that...

does not make the price right though unfortunately.

I will be buying it because I am the kind of sad tech lover that always will, however not to feel ripped off I need sports or adventures to be thrown in for that. It seems crazy not to bundle a game with the sensor no?

  • drxym #78 2 years ago

My guess is some beancounter inside MS has decided that since there are no controllers that they should price the device the same as 2 or 3 controllers on a rival system might cost. I suppose if you added up how the cost of 2 PS3 Move controllers + nunchuks + PSEye this may make sense.

Unfortunately people don't think that way and I believe £129 is too much money. People might eventually spend that much or more on controllers, but one at a time, not one big bang.

Aside from that, the Kinect may be more sophisticated than the average webcam but essentially it's just some CCDs attached to some kind of signal processor. People will compare Kinect to the Move (whose base pack will cost half) and Kinect will suffer. Microsoft will have to bundle the controller up with a game and with consoles for a much more reasonable price than that if they hope to sell many.

Well this isnt the confirmed price, but its too high if thats what its going to be. I mean the whole point of this is to extend the life and sales of the Xbox. So when you buy and Xbox and this on top, why not just get a wii. Its alot cheaper... if you wanted an Xbox you would probably pick it up without Kinect anyway.

  • SpaceMonkey77 #91 2 years ago

That's one insane arse price. I think we are going to see a lot of retailers being reluuctant to stock these, something that could benefit the rise of MS stores.

If MS are smart enough to have Dance Central bundled with it, I'd be tempted. Doubt this will happen though, so I'll also wait til its a more reasonable £50-60.

I do think Dance Central will be key to getting Kinect to sell well. Push out a sweet ad campaign, get it on Oprah, MTV etc, and watch they money roll in.

Why do people always moan about the exchange rate when in reality they have no idea how it works? The cost of living in different countries vary greatly, and that will be reflected in the price of Kinect, just like it is in every single item you ever buy from apples to bread to TVs. America has a lower cost of living than the UK therefore it will be cheaper there than here.

Plus you need to factor in tax here so the US price of $149 converts to about £100, add on our tax and the equivalent is around £118 - making it about 10% more expensive. Hardly much considering the price differences in everything else is it (assuming thats the right price).

  • rascoj64 #103 2 years ago

    @callum9999

Agreed, also whenever a US price is quoted it doesn't include state sales tax (since it differs from state to state), whereas our price has tax included. We don't get shafted as much as we think sometimes.
