Myst spreads to PSN this week

It has taken Ages.

Cyan Worlds and Hoplite Research will offer Myst on the PlayStation Network for PSP this Thursday.

Gamers Daily News carries the first pictures of the game, which will also include the New Rime Age.

Ages are the name of worlds within the Myst universe: the place you are cast into as Stranger, a person who must follow the instructions of special books and gather clues to decipher the world. There are several endings, and the one you see depends on the choices you make.

There's no word on price nor whether this will be available on the PAL PlayStation Store. If not, then you will have to dress up like an American to gain access.

Myst, I believe, is not a game that aged too well IMHO.

But is it still the biggest selling CD-ROM ever?

I remember every single version that came out..

"Sequel to the biggest selling CD-ROM ever!!!" - I'm sure they used that for about 2 decades.

    [edit - wiki entry]

"Myst was the bestselling PC game throughout the 1990s, until The Sims exceeded its sales in 2002"

Not bad for a glorified flip-book

I liked it, wouldn't mind playing it again (sam).

It was the biggest selling CD-ROM because it came free with practically every drive you could buy at the time.

Bit of an odd release really, it was only ever really a demonstration tool for the AMAZING things these new fangled CD-ROM's could do. Not sure it'd be of much interest today.

Myst games looked a lot prettier then most games on the market at the time of it's release, which helped sell them before games were powered by highpowered 3D graphics cards or started putting CG/FMV on the back of game boxes, that and Myst games are easy to get to because like turn based games means that you don't have to react fast to situations that are happening, so it's not surprising they sold well.

Sure and as it is, it makes sense to bring it to a portable device though.

Given the Rime age has been around nearly 10 years now (it was originally in realMyst in 2000), I think it's a bit of a stretch to still be calling it new.

Me too, but then I played it on PSP, and its true to say it hasn't aged well.

All it needed was a better control system and it might be worth a look. But scrolling a mouse pointer labouriously to various hot spots on the screen just killed the whole experience. Maybe they have made a better job of it for PSN. If not, I wouldn't bother with the download (it will only shatter your positive memories).

P.s. Ah. This is the PSP version, brought to the PSN store.

Sorry to bring bad news people, but it blows. And I loved Myst back in the day.

    :(

Surely this would make more sense as a DS game (point'n'click and all?)

    Or wii?

Not going to play this with a D-pad, or the stupid analog stick thingy. Besides, I already finished it on PC. If it were Realmyst, maybe, but not this one.

@cyacomini: when you think about it, the best selling games on PC are a glorified flip-book and a glorified tamagotchi.

@Irien: it would. Cyan thought so too, apparently, because they made a DS version. Unfortunately, it sucks.

kangarotoo: you have the game? I'd like to know something. I've looked at some screens, and it looks like the original version (the 256 colors one), while other screens look like the Masterpiece Edition. What's the truth?

It`s weird choice by platform. Seems to me too, that this is more DS/Wii business, but i guess every console gets sooner or later Myst game. Or original Powerpoint-Myst.

Ahh, Myst. I remember returning it to GAME, back when you could return games, even PC games.

"What's wrong with it?" "It's terrible." "OK then."
  • kangarootoo #17 3 years ago

    @Malek86

I did have it on UMD. I don't anymore.

I honestly can't say which version it is for sure as I gave up very early on due to the poor interface. The screens I saw (based on my memory of the original on my Mac all those years ago) looked like the original version. If there were any reworked screens later on, I never got far enough to see them. Sorry I can't be more help.

"Surely this would make more sense as a DS game (point'n'click and all?)"

A DS version is available and is one of the worst quality pieces of software you could buy for that system, especially the US sku.

I mean low res Myst raped onto two small screen using a whooping total of 2mb, what was the point!!!
