Medal of Honor: Warfighter out this October - report

UPDATE: EA confirms news, releases concept art.

UPDATE: The official Medal of Honor site has confirmed the game's existence and posted a piece of concept art. Take a look below.

ORIGINAL STORY: The next game in EA's Medal of Honor series is subtitled Warfighter and arrives in stores this October, so says a GameInformer report.

Citing the new issue of Official Xbox Magazine's cover story, it claimed that the game will be developed in its entirety by Danger Close.

DICE developed the multiplayer for the 2010 series reboot but the Swedish studio apparently has no involvement this time around. However, the game will be built on its Frostbite 2.0 engine.

A full reveal is expected at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco early next month.

Its predecessor launched 18 months ago to considerable fanfare but mixed critical response.

"It certainly does little to advance the theory that videogames are responsible enough to tell stories within sensitive contexts - it's compelling and enjoyable to play on a visceral level, but it's a shame it lacks the creative bravery to match the courage of the heroes it so reveres," read Eurogamer's Medal of Honor review.

good. leave dice to the BF franchises :)
  • DilutedDante #2 3 months ago

Absolutely loved the last one, can't wait for this. If they can sort out some of the technical problems like the pop in, that would be just lovely.
  • X3Entente #3 3 months ago

warfighter! lulz, most laughably generic name ive ever heard:rolleyes:
  • arcam #4 3 months ago

How about making it a proper single player game? Surely this needs something different to make anyone want to buy it? The other big modern shooters seem to have given up on the SP aspect so why not try and fill that niche?
  • oceanmotion #5 3 months ago

Yeah, make some epic single player with the only multi player being co-op.
  • chrisola #6 3 months ago

    another generic 8/10 fps. yay.
  • Progguitarist #7 3 months ago

    Warfighter? Seriously?
  • zubnut #8 3 months ago

    No preorder at Game??
  • andy10 #9 3 months ago

I'm probably in the minority but I'm looking forward to this. The single player had some interesting ideas in places and I quite liked the pacing - hope they'll try and carve out their own style rather than aping COD. Shame DICE aren't doing the multiplayer again: MOH1 remains one of my favourite multiplayer experiences this gen. Yes, I know I'm odd.
  • cheeky-sod #10 3 months ago

Last one was boring and really short.
  • makeamazing #11 3 months ago

So a lot of big games seem to be keeping away from November.. what with this an AC3... is there something happening in November that the public haven't been told about yet, like the release of GTA? Be interesting to see if any of the other big games keep away from November (guess we haven't had the release date for BO2 yet?)
  • AntiGrav82 #12 3 months ago

I'll be very surprised if Ubisoft let them get away with Warfighter seeing as its part of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
  • matrim83 #17 3 months ago

    Warfighter? Gunshooter was already taken??
  • chessboxer #18 3 months ago

I'm glad they're using Frostbite 2 instead of Unreal Engine 3.

Will be looking forward to this.

I quite enjoyed the last one, but in all honesty I'm so fucking excruciatingly bored of the 'modern military shooter' FPS sub-genre that I doubt I'll check this out. I actually want to go back to shooting aliens, things have gotten that bad.

But good luck to Danger Close. Hopefully they can make it feel a bit more unique and interesting than just closely aping COD and BF.
  • Uncompetative #20 3 months ago

Eeek. I'm a bit dubious about this, given that the best thing about it was the Multiplayer.

    Which was by DICE.

The on-rails helicopter mission was pretty, but that's about all I can say for it. Shame...
  • DifferentClass #21 3 months ago

    Fighting wars, honourably, for medals.
  • StolenGlory #22 3 months ago

Underrated and under appreciated was the original. I have some good hopes for this :)
  • MatMan562 #23 3 months ago

And the reason Dice have no involvement is because they're hard at work on Mirror's Edge 2... right?

    right?

    oh...

    :-(
  • its-LegendOfGamer #24 3 months ago

I think people will be waiting for Black ops 2 so this has fail written all over it.
  • DilutedDante #25 3 months ago

@its-LegendOfGamer Just because people will buy a probably rubbish sequel to a rubbish game doesn't mean the probably pretty good sequel to a pretty good game will be a failure.

The last sold 5 million copies plus. That's hardly awful.
  • Dave #26 3 months ago

It's interesting to see what the final game will be: will it be somewhat original this time, or will it stick to the safe road like most recent EA games?

On a sidenote, since DICE isn't doing the mp, how is DC getting this game done in just 2 years?
  • DilutedDante #27 3 months ago

    @DifferentClass That's a totally awesome title.
  • LEONOFDEATH #28 3 months ago

Lets hope the FOV isnt like looking through a sniper scope for the whole game. Felt so restricted.
  • its-LegendOfGamer #29 3 months ago

DilutedDante - So you didnt like Black ops, well i thought medal of honor was shit so whats your point? And seeing as MOH sold around 5 mill like you said, black ops sold around 30 mill. So as i was saying alot of people will probably wait the extra month for Black ops 2.
Lets be honest here, the first MOH only did as well as it did because of the fact Dice was given multiplayer duties. And that was still shit lol.
  • sfp_noodle #30 3 months ago

I actually thought the original had a very good campaign and solid MP. What I loved about the MP was that it was FUN. Yes, there were variants of killstreaks but they didn't seem over-powered like they are in COD games. Best part of all was that almost everyone I played with was playing for a laugh as opposed to getting a K/D ratio of 1, 000, 000:0. No camping "no-scope" snipers and no constant n00b tubing.

I'll probably wait for this to drop in price as the original went down to £9.99 by Christmas. Plus it'd be nice if they could put another HD game on the disc. I'd love a port of Allied Assault. That and Frontlines remain the best MOH games in the series history. Make it happen EA.
  • jimr9999us #31 3 months ago

loving it. just came on to post about the ridiculousness of the Warfighter title and saw everyone beat me to it.

EA will figure out they've insulted gamers at about the same time they're bought out by TacoBell. Idiots.
  • DifferentClass #32 3 months ago

@DilutedDante I know, right? Does what it says on the tin.
With so many games like this it must be becoming hard to think of titles now. I look forward to Combat Warfare Fighters: Battle Allies.

Serious though, I have to come up with names that sound like low end Amiga games/Gameloft titles just entertain me since most of these games inspire the same mental stimulation as staring out of the bus window on a drizzly day for six hours.

A genuinely great war game could be made, but these woefully limited corridor shooters with a collection of guns that all shoot the same are not it.
  • mattk84 #33 3 months ago

I liked the 1st one and played the MP enough to get my 1000g.

The multiplayer spawn system was really broken tho so maybe its a good thing they are doing their own thing.

Lose the kill chains too as that heavily favoured snipers which is a DICE thing.
  • DilutedDante #34 3 months ago

@its-LegendOfGamer You do realise that Call of Duty is an extreme exception when it comes to game sales right?

Very, very few games sell 20m plus units. Christ, few push 10m plus. You're talking Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto and certain first party Nintendo games basically.

LA Noire did 5 million copies, and is considered a success.
  • chaywa #35 3 months ago

Its articles like this which make you miss WW2 shooters.

    Almost.
  • collateral89 #36 3 months ago

Make the multiplayer unique and not a taster of battlefield but I did enjoy the story
  • HeNiCiDe1988 #37 3 months ago

tbh I like the name but its just gonna be another thing making out how awesome america is by having them killing the 'uncivilized' bad guys whilst american are portrayed as the only ones that can do tactics in war or whom are civilized and bring order and enlightenment through force to the 'savages'.

It would be hilarious to actually see a war game or tv show where the enemies that american army face where actually civilized and not just shown to be practically primative hordes that charge at you with huge numbers . Like if an enemy was portrayed as actually using tactics and not just randomly dropping down or popping out of nowhere or whom dont do dirty or underhanded stuff and are actually another proper army.

One good thing I suppose with gears of war and halo is that they kinda do tactics, its because frankly if america/humanity faced a army in a war that was just as 'civilized and organized' as them it would be a hell a lot harder to win. So by the enemies being pretty ropey rag tag bunch whom are pretty unorganized, they (american) then just easily overpower them through organisation.

    @X3Entente, @Progguitarist, @rtk79, @matrim83, @jimr9999us, @DifferentClass and @anyone else who thinks Warfighter is a stupid name.

You're wrong. Warfighter is probably the best subtitle for a modern day shooter I've ever heard.

Warfighter is a term regularly used by today's military to describe the men and women who's job it is to protect your freedoms. Medal of Honor has made a point of trying to remain true to the look, feel and integrity of real combat and real combatants. Compared to MoH, other shooters with a Modern setting of Warfare are so fantastical they might as well be a Disney production.

Here is some light reading for you.

Danger Close probably would want to go super realistic route to have any chances. Too same with CoD/BF and people will probably ignore it.
  • sjmlondon #43 3 months ago

Campaign was fine on the last one. The multiplayer was a big let down though.
Let's hope Dice concentrate on producing some new decent maps for BF3 instead.
  • Beano #44 3 months ago

"..the game will be build on its Frostbite 2.0 engine."

I was expecting this to be a generic shooter but these news have changed my expectations completely. It will be a ugly, jerky and generic shooter.
  • Beano #45 3 months ago

...and what genius came up with the Warfighter title?

Was "Badass War Fighter Killaz Who Owns" taken?
  • local_celebrity #46 3 months ago

No word of a lie, I actually nodded off while playing the first one.
  • superfurry #47 3 months ago

So this Warfighter. Does he fight wars?
  • zegerman1942 #48 3 months ago

The last one was one of the worst shooters i have ever played. It was as if they had read the manual on how to make an FPS and literally covered every point, several times over. It felt like a string of set pieces jumbled together with bad scripting and an even worse story.

Not holding my breath for this one.

Cool. Frostbite 2 engine works really well on PS3. So far every game made using it has been better on PS3 than 360.

I'm a bit disappointed with the use of frostbite 2.0. I feel the engine is not console ready. IMHO the Unreal powered single player of the first game looked better then the frostbite 1.0 powered multiplayer.
  • Ranger101 #61 3 months ago

@JesseDeya Good god man, do you not realise you're on EUROgamer - military fetishism and terms like 'protecting your freedoms' are ridiculous in our eyes.

Our rich history of Imperial warmongering has left us bored.

EA should do something really different with this game and make it like a Skyrim style open world Military FPS, not yet another Scripted Campaign Shooter.

Or how about a game, in similar style to Ace Attorney, where you are a member of the US Senate, and you have to argue for or against a war in DURKISTAN, and your evidence and objections can be real or fake intel, and you have to convince the rest of the House of it's authenticity, with the end-game being an invasion or buying cute puppies for the populatation.
    Edited by Ranger101 at 24/02/12 @ 10:43
  • DilutedDante #62 3 months ago

@Ranger101 I realise you're joking, but the Ace Attorney idea is actually really good.

So is the open world one, but Farcry 3 is coming out in September so we can just buy that.
  • I@mP30Gamer #63 3 months ago

Woow very very hot news really and hope that it release like 2010 version but better and don't like as call of duty or battlefield game!

I love you very much MEDAL OF HONOR ;)
  • TURBOKILLFACE53 #64 3 months ago

why cant they make an underwater fps where you can play as a variety aquatic life? imagine an octopus with 8 different weapons at once! or maby inside someones body where you play as viruses or antibodies? so sick of realistic FPS games!
  • JesseDeya #65 3 months ago

@Ranger101 I can't help but notice the irony in you pointing out the EURO to me whilst sporting the most American AND Military of user names ever. EVER.

    Seriously, dripping in irony.

You're right though, I never really expected my words to resonate here but they needed to at least be said by someone. I'm currently serving alongside several other EURO nations here in a country you would no doubt flippantly refer to as one of the 'STANs, and we use the term Warfighter on a daily basis. Whether you think our actions a ridiculous or not, we do them for you just the same and without hesitation so you can hopefully sleep well tonight.

@ExplodingClown I guess that makes you right.

ps: EG doesn't just service Europeans you know, plenty of us Aussies here too.
  • Golgo #66 3 months ago

@JesseDeya: What does 'warfighter' mean, then? 'Soldier'? (Serious question)
  • Al_Swearengen #67 3 months ago

We'll see. I really don't think there's room for this to be honest.
The last one was ok but the multiplayer tried too hard to be COD. Odd given that it was cobbled together by DICE. The kill-streaks they used were awful and made all the more problematic by the fact that kills earned with one were counted in the player's cumulative kills in order to earn the next one. So you'd end up with cowerdly Snipers taking out enough guys to earn the first kill streak then earning more and more on top of that by dropped ordinance onto spawn points. This was my experience at least.

My personal preference would be to drop kills streaks altogether. They are getting pretty dumb now. Battlefield doesn't need them. Their over-use has turned games like COD into some crazy arcade game. No tactics, no finesse, just insanity and an ever ticking clock counting down to your next death/respawn.

That approach seems to work for million upon millions of people... it's just not for me any more.
  • cianchristopher #68 3 months ago

This'll probably sell the usual 4-5 million, which is an nice little earner for EA. But, it won't move them any closer to Activision and CoD (though, I suspect they've given up on chasing those sales figures and are content to let CoD slide back on its own, to even things out).
  • Iain815 #69 3 months ago

Christ, please change the name EA.
  • ExplodingClown #70 3 months ago

    @JesseDeya

Go me! A prize every time.

Seriously though, it's a ridiculously redundant expression. You might as well say 'cardriver' or 'foodeater'.
  • JesseDeya #71 3 months ago

    @ExplodingClown

So Street Fighter, Pocket Fighter, Tie Fighter, Eagle Fighter, Rumble Fighter and even Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter are all acceptable game titles, yet MoH Warfighter (a real, and correct term) somehow isn't?

Maybe I'm just used to the word so it doesn't sound odd, but to me Warfighter is about as 'core as you can get and fits perfectly into the story they are telling in MoH - Tier 1 operatives in modern day Afghanistan.
  • TheGuvernor #72 3 months ago

    Bring back WW2.
    It's time.....
    MOH will always be WW2
  • DilutedDante #73 3 months ago

@JesseDeya Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is a particularly dumb name. As is the name everyone actually called it, which was GRAW.
  • danidrums #74 3 months ago

@TheGuvernor Now you said it right, I miss the endless nights of Allied Assault MP :D
