Sony confirms Call of Duty for PlayStation Vita this autumn

"We see this as a five to 10 year platform."

This autumn's Call of Duty game will also be released on PlayStation Vita, Sony has revealed.

"And of course, in the autumn, [my two teenage sons are] really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and we think that's going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform," Guy Longsworth, senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing, told GameTrailers TV.

The game's full name wasn't revealed, nor was the developer - presumably Treyarch for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. But will the Vita version be the same?

Longsworth went on to commit Sony's top studios to Vita development. This included Naughty Dog, which isn't making Uncharted: Golden Abyss for Vita - Sony Bend is.

bull

"We see this as a five to 10-year platform."

"Absolutely you will [see Naughty Dog on Vita]," confirmed Longsworth. "You'll see a number of games coming out from all of our studios."

And good games are what make Vita stand apart, pitched Longsworth, who's "absolutely" bullish about Vita's potential for global success.

But Vita has struggled to convince Japanese shoppers, and weak weekly sales are dipping.

"If you listen to gamers, and you listen to the response people have had, who've actually got their hands on this thing, it's been just a tremendous response - way ahead of our expectations actually," enthused the ever-grinning Longsworth.

"We see this as a five to 10 year platform, so we'll judge the success of this in 12, 24, 36 months.

"We expect to have a great launch, but it's really in 12 or 24 months we'll know how successful it's been."

PlayStation Vita launches this Wednesday across the UK.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss - the benchmark.

It will REALLY be in its stride in 5 years.

I'd like a SSX announcement next please. Then God of War.

    Then a Vib Ribbon port.

Played it at the Vita rooms in London on Saturday (oh and saw Wiley!). I loved it, but I must be honest, I thought the graphics would be better. They are very good, but I feel like they looked better when seeing it indirectly. At times uncharted reminded me of an iPhone game.
But it seems like an awesome device and I would have one if I could afford it. I'm sure as developers unlock the power of it, you will have near PS3 levels of detail. Gravity Rush (or was it Dash) was exactly the type of quirky Japanese game I wanna play.

an port of PS360 COD would be great. Maybe with cross platform play with PS3 like wipeout. They'll shift a lot of units over christmas if they do that right.

    Wednesday can't come soon enough!!
  • Goonboy #5 3 months ago

COD in the West and Monster Hunter in Japan and Vita might just survive.
  • God_Octo #6 3 months ago

Nihilistic Software are making Golden Abyss? That's news to me and probably to Sony Bend. Poor folk.

But I'm sure CoD will shift some units later this year. Its almost guaranteed.
  • X201 #7 3 months ago

Would be brilliant if they could implement the Vita as some kind of PDA for maps etc.
  • Monkeyspoon #8 3 months ago

Nihilistic are making resistance not uncharted.

5 to 10 years - that's quite a split, clearly they have no idea what will happen with it : p

and COD, yeah, as much as people like to bash on it, it's up to blockbuster like that to ignite a spark of life in new, expensive system.

This could very well be the thing that will push Vita ahead of all other handhelds (3DS, iPhone, etc). COD is the most popular videogame on the planet and if the Vita version is identical to the console versions, Vita will sell like crazy......
  • Widge #14 3 months ago

I don’t give a fig about COD, but there is a market that does. I noted that things like FIFA and Football Manager still get advertised as having PSP versions on TV, which is unusual for something that has effectively been dead (in the public view) over here for a good while. The reason is that there was a core market of PSP users who got it for FIFA on the go. I would bet that these same users who want FIFA on the go would be the same who would absolutely love COD on the go. As marvellous as some games like Gravity Daze might be, its all about FIFA and COD with some people.
  • PcPlasticfuzz #15 3 months ago

The Zavvi outlets have the wifi model for sub £200. I don't class that as expensive myself. Even when u tack on a memory card. No more expensive than any other console launch only this one has arguably more technology actually built in.
  • PixelPirate #16 3 months ago

The thing that will kill the vita, is all the journalist writing non stop articles about it "failing".
  • natureboy #17 3 months ago

I hope to get the Vita and the redesigned 3DS when finances allow
  • darkcult #18 3 months ago

If it turns good I will consider buying Vita. Looking forward to see more announcements like this from Sony.

  • danhese007 #20 3 months ago

@PixelPirate Seriously, every "journalist" especially since the start of this gen seem very pessimistic, so doom and gloomy about everything. This is our beloved industry and we need good journalist to drum up interest in console gaming before it is lost to cheap games on phones.

I can't see a COD game on VITA being a system seller, even if it is the biggest selling game in the World.

People buy COD for the multiplayer (not me, I'm a BF3 man). If you've got the choice between playing it on PS3/Xbox or Vita it's a no brainer really.

How well does COD sell on Wii in comparison?
  • Dizzy #24 3 months ago

    >if the Vita version is identical to the console versions, Vita will sell like crazy......

Unlikely... CoD players are usually not portable lovers. (unless the game has some kind of cross play... that could work).
  • DarpaChief #25 3 months ago

It's how I handle business. It's a metaphor. But that actually happened though.
  • DJDog #26 3 months ago

I see this as a 2-4 year device.
  • xypha09 #27 3 months ago

This device deserves to succeed. For the good of gaming it needs too. The Japanese have really strange taste in games and can understand the 3ds succeeding.

But gamers in the west need to support this device or I fear the handheld market will be taken over by shallow touch screen games.
  • Whitster #28 3 months ago

    @GAmbrose Look at it in this scenerio;

Dave loves COD and FIFA, but Daves missus likes reality TV and soaps operas so dave can't play COD and FIFA as much as he may like, as he has to share the TV.

Now Dave can have a handheld console that allows him play almost home console quality versions of COD and FIFA regardless of whats on TV, and with quite a good possibly he can use the same character/team builds as the PS3 version and cross play with his mates playing on PS3. In addition to this he can also go and sit in Maccy Ds/Starbucks/Wetherspoons and lunchtime and bust a few more levels over their wi-fi.

I'm sure with these kind of options we will see some take up from people who aren't traditional handheld gamers.

  • GAmbrose #29 3 months ago

    @Whitster

Dave wouldn't be seen dead in public playing a Vita.
  • Whitster #30 3 months ago

@GAmbrose 5 years ago I would have agreed with you, but given that every other seat on my train these days has someone with a tablet/smartphone/ebook reader/DS sitting in it, I think the taboos gone.
  • Seoh #31 3 months ago

Lol love the image from Dodgeball, "that really happened!"
  • BigDannyH #32 3 months ago

I'm not really sure why more gamers don't appear to be interested in the Vita? I can't wait to be able to take console (or at least PSN) quality games around with me. Especially for journeys and when lounging about on holiday.

I don't even feel the price is that scary. I'm sure it'll drop by £30 just before Xmas but will it really go that much under £200?
  • johnson81 #33 3 months ago

I said I was going to wait for a price drop after getting stung by the 3DS, but after watching loads of "Quick Looks" on Giant Bomb, I've gone and ordered one from Amazon. I can't see it having much more of a price drop in the next 6 months as it's sub £200 at the minute, so I doubt I'll lose much by waiting.

I'm not the biggest fan of COD but this is great news for the Vita. I'd rather have a different game than the PS360 version though as I wouldn't buy it twice.
  • roz123 #34 3 months ago

@Whitster: Dave could wait till the end of the year and get a Wii U where you can play the full console games on the controller whilst his misses watches TV. Thats a big market for handhelds which could be hurt, especially if MS or Sony produce something similar.
  • GamesConnoisseur #35 3 months ago

If COD on Vita turns out for 18 certed and in other countries too with their ratings, would Guy Longsworth still allows his teenage sons to play?!

Doomsayers are just far too early to call it, yes only need few AAA titles in to turn it around.

Look at 3DS, very poor for a good portion of the year until Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. RER helped BT I was always convinced it's a good system that needs better library.

Preordered Vita and looking forward to it, heck I still had major enjoyment from Dreamcast, GameCube and N64, all considered a failure. Total failure is only being able to enjoy only a mere handful of good titles for the outlay of the console.

I haven't experienced that yet, touch the wood!
  • rockin_rob_1 #36 3 months ago

Jak and Daxter Vita confirmed then.
  • makeamazing #37 3 months ago

Dave could wait till the end of the year and get a Wii U where you can play the full console games on the controller whilst his misses watches TV

@roz123, Dave could but at the moment, no one has an idea of what the tech specs of the Wii U will be or if it will be any good, what the price is... also it still has to be seen how quick these AAA games will appear on a platform that on the norm users doesn't normally buy them in big numbers (perhaps thats Nintendo's plan to try and take both the casual and the hardcore).

I actually Vita may impact more on the Wii-U's success, rather than the other way around... all depends on what the specs are for it.
  • cloudskipa #38 3 months ago

@xypha09 Ironic considering COD is as shallow as it gets. Just because a game implements touch screen controls it doesn't make it shallow.
  • cloudskipa #39 3 months ago

Seriously just how on earth can any gamer be remotely excited by the prospect of playing COD on the Vita? Fucking yawn.
  • bemani247 #40 3 months ago

Im waiting for the inevitable GT port and hopefully Ryu Ga Gotoku/Yakuza!
  • Widge #41 3 months ago

@cloudskipa True, but a lot of them are. I noted that there is a decent amount of complexity and strategy to Hero Academy (which will only get greater with the addition of more teams) On the flipside, there are a lot of variations on the obstacle endurance game. Limited control, avoid whatever is randomly generated in your face. They are alright, and a lot of them are quite clever with hooking you in with a coin grind or something similar. Much as we lol at COD, there is more to it than that.
  • Widge #42 3 months ago

@cloudskipa As I said, the dedicated FIFA/COD gamers. There will be a proportion of people whose purchase will be purely down to that.

I'm more interested in that Metal Gear & Final Fantasy HD package. Everyone has their poison.
  • darkos87 #43 3 months ago

It is going to gain momentum in 3 years!
  • TonyHarrison #44 3 months ago

I think CoD will be limited from being a true mega hit on the Vita (i.e. it won't be the game changer Sony want it to be) because it's a series that focuses on online multiplayer, and as we're talking about a portable console, we're talking about a reliance on wifi hotspots when you're not at home even if you have the 3G version.

Then when you're at home, you're far more likely to play the 360/PS3 version anyway.
  • natureboy #45 3 months ago

The 3DS and Vita are good for gaming - it will keep those doomsayers at bay
  • Retro_ #46 3 months ago

Just unlock remote play of PS3 titles SONY, I want to play Resisitance 3 on my Vita whilst the missus watches her TV programs.
  • Fluffin #47 3 months ago

Personally I could not care 2 sticks for a COD version but I still pleased to see it.

The bigger picture is that 2 of the biggest X-mas Blockbusters (COD+FIFA) are coming out hopefully selling more Vitas and more Vita games. The more games made and sold the higher the chance of games being realised that I want.
  • kirinnokoshin #48 3 months ago

  • alexbulluk #49 3 months ago

Cod might be fun, actually. If it was a fleshed out version (multiplayer, classes, DLC, etc) I could see it doing really well. I think I'd enjoy being able to play a bit of multiplayer while sat in McDonalds or something :D
  • Collymilad #50 3 months ago

@Whitster Except lets face it, they would be great features which will probably not happen. e.g. Using the same character/whatever.

If there's one thing you can say about game developers this gen it's that if there's a cool, fairly simple idea they probably won't implement it in their games for whatever reason.
  • septimus #51 3 months ago

    10 years? Bless.

The graphics it outputs will look 10 years out of date in two when compared to all the latest tablets/phones etc coming/announced over the next 18 months.
  • MrBeast #52 3 months ago

They should have had a COD game for launch, even if it was just a port of MW3. Portable versions of COD and FIFA (preferably with some kind of cross-play, keep your stats across PS3 / PSV versions) would have given the console a launch line-up with a much larger appeal.
  • makeamazing #53 3 months ago

A version of COD will help sell more Vita's, how much, well thats unknown, but i am buying it just because of Uncharted, and I think there are many people who will. If a game is liked enough and successful enough, then it will bring people over. Just look at Monster Hunter, which is pretty crazy numbers really.
  • Whitster #54 3 months ago

@Collymilad I think sony may well be pushing these features fairly hard to developers.
  • djkav #55 3 months ago

TBH, They touted the PSP as handheld PS2. In reality, its more a souped up PS1.

They touted the PS Vita as a handheld PS3. In reality its more of a really souped up PS2. Sure it looks great on its small resolution screen. It just seems to be lacking the grunt in the background.

Well, I said it'd be coming from day one, as its the premier FPS franchise. It's with CoD that Vita will bring its big ball game, and once it begins, 3DS is going to be in a world of hurt.

Vita's going to be crazy for FPS games on the move, especially if they have can have voice chat and online play.

Gearbox should seriously be thinking about getting Battlefield onto Vita too.

@seeafish I feel Uncharted Ga was rushed to meet the Japanese launch. The game needed a few months of time.I think Marval vs Capcom 3 could be a first gen Ps3 game.I also think in time games will look much better, kinda like the psp their where alot of games that looked like Ps1 games with smoother textures. You get games like GoW GoS that looks better then both Gow's on Ps2.
  • riseer #64 3 months ago

@kassmageant Well CoD on a portable sounds sexy to me.The game has to run 60fps tho.Which they can do it maybe Sony will need to unlock the Cpu from 1ghz to 2ghz or something.I know on the Psp Ready at Dawn had to beg Sony to unlock the Mhz on the Cpu.This is something that might happen if their are games that need the extra power.
  • riseer #65 3 months ago

@GAmbrose Last time i checked i can't bring my Ps3 with me.With Vita you can take that thing to some Wifi hotspots and frag some people while your at lunch.
  • riseer #66 3 months ago

@DJDog it has a good 5 years graphic's will be dated. That doesn't matter since Iphone/Android games won't use the full power of the hardware.I only seen two games that really push the current mobile phone hardware Infinity Blade 2 comes to mind as well as Rage ios.Beyond that nothing seems to really push the hardware. If you look at Vita MvC3,Uncharted GA and Resistance Burning skies already has em beat imo.

    Count me in.

Will buy a Vita for a good portable FPS with two stick controls. If that FPS happens to be CoD then, well I guess that's good marketing and consumer recognition.

However i may use iPhone tethering for the Internet connection based on the 3G plans and price difference of the console models at the time

Used tethering with an MBP and the connection was pretty stable. Not entirely sure you'd get the ping for a game a CoD tho, anyone tried online gaming through a tethered phone connection?
