Final Fantasy 10 HD remake for Vita and PS3 is a remaster

But visuals will be much better, promises Square Enix.

The Final Fantasy 10 HD remake for Vita and PlayStation 3 is in fact a remaster, Square Enix has confirmed.

When the game was announced at last year's Tokyo Game Show, it was described ambiguously as a remake, leading some to believe Square Enix planned to completely revamp the game in high definition.

Now, Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto, speaking at the Taipei Game Show (via Andriasang), has cleared up the confusion.

"The game is being developed like a high-definition remaster, but the visuals will look much better compared to the original," he told Taiwanese gaming site Gamer.

As Andriasang points out, Hashimoto's "remaster" comment confirms Final Fantasy 10 on Vita and PS3 will be akin to the HD updates of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Final Fantasy 10 HD is without a release date.

I hope they'll be doing FF12 too. Dunno whether to get this on the Vita or the PS3, though. @.@

FF10 is where the series started to go really wrong for me. Too much focus on 'the shiny' instead of the gameplay. Got to say, though, that remasters are much preferred for me over remakes. I don't see why a remake would be necessary for FF10 over any of the earlier titles.
  • Triggerhappytel #3 4 months ago

When the series lost its world map and became more linear is where I started to lose interest too; never really got on with FFX. I also don't really like the sci-fi stylings of it - I prefer the Olde Worlde, airships and dragons aesthetic.

Can't wait. I loved FFX and the thought of having a sparkly portable version is just dreamy. The addition of Trophies could be cool too, for Monster Arena achievements.

Also hope FFXII gets the treatment to fix the shoddy bordered video and exceptionally aliased/boxy environments. I didn't get to finish it as the PS3 had come along and, even with the advent of BC, I just found new shinies more enthralling than its softly softly, less story driven approach.

Not fussed its not a remake, wasn't expecting anything else.

FF10 was the last great FF for me, it had a great breadth of characters, and towns that were geniunely interesting. 12 i never got on with, but actually enjoyed the spin off Reverent wings alot more. But would love for 12 to be re-released as well so i can give it an another shot.

*Insert inevitable "remake FF7 instead!" comment here*
  • shadow651 #7 4 months ago

10 was the first time I played FF, was never really into RPGs before that. I remember being blown away by that game, the story, visuals, everything was just better then what existed in gaming at the time
  • GamesConnoisseur #8 4 months ago

I had played both FFX and FFXII briefly last year, it was most apparent how jaggy and uglier the latter looked and was thinking how much a simple remaster would change the whole look. The former's art style and colours ensure its looked reasonably nice any. So didn't feel that FFX called for remastering as much as the far uglier looking FFXII but still gonna be nice though.

RE FFX HD: Vita and PS3 would be a universal single purchase?
  • Shikasama #9 4 months ago

FFX is possibly my favourite game of all time. I spent hundreds of hours getting the legendary weapons, unlocking the monster arenas, completign the sphere grids and trying to beat Penance without using the trick.

It's possibly the best and saddest ending I've seen to a game.

This actually makes me a little jealous of my PS3 owning mate.

MGS and now FF10.. in my hand you say... yes please, don't mean to wish my life away but roll on 22nd.
  • Whitster #11 4 months ago

I really didn't like 10, I know I'm in a minority but I never got along with it. A 12 remake I would be all over though.
  • AnotherIdiot #12 4 months ago

Hated this game, before this game the series was good, this marked the beginning of the end that is the only remarkable thing about it. All of the FF PS2 games are rubbish and to revisit them as if they are old classics shows how lost and hopeless this series and its owners are.
  • Schiraman #13 4 months ago

As long as it's at a budget price, I'd be cautiously interested in an HD version of FFX. It's a good game, despite its flaws - but TBH I did think it was a step in the wrong direction in many ways, with its very linear progression and lack of world map.

And I agree with a lot of the other comments here - I'd be more interested in seeing a remake/release/remastering of FFXII. Although it was a bit hit and miss, FXII had some really great ideas, and had probably the strongest sense of place of any FF game.

They've still left it pretty vague as to the extent of the remaster.

Could be just rendered at a higher res, could be a Zelda OOT style one with models and textures redone.
  • Toothball #15 4 months ago

Ah good, I just bought 7, 8 and 9 while they're on sale. I've got them on disc but am more likely to play them on the move. Was wondering whether the PS2 games would appear too.

Still got a lot of catching up to do before I get there though. I only got through the first disc of 7 last time, so it'll be a while before I need to worry about 10. Would like to see 12 too, as it sounds like it has a system I'd get along with.

I want Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on Vita please!
  • super_monty #17 4 months ago

I wish they would just make a really good new game.
  • silversun #18 4 months ago

going through part of the origonal yesterday and i forgot how good some of the cutscenes in the game are.
They may not have lots lights and effect and explosions. but wow the connection with the game is still there over 10 years later.
I think this will do really well when they bring it over in HD.

Looking forward to playing this again. Fingers crossed they look at doing a few more of their classic titles in HD as well.
  • tengblad #20 4 months ago

Forget about the visuals, what about the audio? Will that be much improved, too? By, for example, replacing Tidus' voice actor? That infamous "Tidus laughing" scene still sends shivers of unpleasantness up my spine.
  • silversun #21 4 months ago

@tengblad If they change the va i belive it may ruin the game.
Saw that scene last night and i would disagree with that.
It was good scene , in that the laughing was fake but the real laughing was at the end of that scene.

Final Fantasy 10 set the series down its current path to self-destruction. Teenage cliche protagonists, bright silly setting, the main male character wearing fruity revealing clothing, and no world map or flyable airship.
  • FanBoysSuck #23 4 months ago

FFX was the last final fantasy I liked and had the best combat system out of all of them in my opinion. If the price is right I'll certainly be picking it up.
  • Zozzilla #24 4 months ago

@GamesConnoisseur Oh hey you're right - if people have the PS3 version they can stream it to the Vita...I forgot about that! If they enable it anyway.

  • Widge #25 4 months ago

@FanBoysSuck FFX-2's system was better, even though the game itself was turd.
  • darm #26 4 months ago

I'd prefer XII, never got to play it - was too busy with graduating at the time and didn't have PS2 after that. Will get X, too, though, it was quite ok and I didn't have quite enough time to beat all of the Dark Aeons, now there's sure to be a trophy for it.
  • FortysixterUK #27 4 months ago

This is great news. And if they did FF12 I would be over the moon. That's my fave next to FF3 ( FF6)
  • Retro_ #28 4 months ago

FFXII sure looked ugly but I prefer the look and feel of FFXII to FFX. Also, I preferred the score, it is quite beautiful.
  • JumpinJackFlash #29 4 months ago

One of the worst FF games ever made. Poor narrative, awful voiceovers and annoying characters you couldn't give a damn about.
  • Ror1984 #30 4 months ago

I played through X again fairly recently and absolutely loved it. I'll play it all over again and still love it, it's one of my favourites.

Hopefully we'll be able to swap saves between the Vita and PS3 versions. I'll definitely buy it for both if that's the case.
  • a8a #31 4 months ago

I loved FFX - probably second after VII for offline titles (FFXI easily has the majority of my playtime, but rating MMOs isnt as easily done). I'd be interested to see a remaster, although some additional content wouldnt hurt, as long as they dont change the essence of the game.

@Triggerhappytel - I have to disagree on two counts. Firstly, FFX was absolutely very linear. As was FFXIII. The other three titles in the main series, however, have been much less linear than earlier games. In terms of loss of interest over time, I agree with you, although I would put the decline a bit later (and earlier games weren't immune either - FFVIII was a low point for me). My point is just that the loss of world map did not lead directly to linearity.

Secondly, with regards the style, FFX wasn't so much sci-fi - it was a deliberate attempt to broaden the narrow cliche of knights and armor fantasy. This had already been started with VII and VIII, and in FFX the particular intention was to introduce south-east Asian artistic stylings into the mix. That's basically a nit-pick though ;p

Bring back Squall. Bring back the old classic way of playing.

Having said that FF10 was really good. No chance of an XBLA release?

Living up to your name with that comment
  • Whatascoop #34 4 months ago

I still remember a mate defending the shocking PAL conversion of FFX as intentional to enhance the game. You see the giant borders make it widescreen and more cinematic!
  • bikmate #35 4 months ago

I'm expecting a DF comparison between PCSX2 and the HD upscale from SE. Make it happen guys please!
  • dudefella #36 4 months ago

Please please please remaster FF12, SE. High point of the series since the PS1 days.
  • Ace-Reject #37 4 months ago

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 10 i couldn't stop playing blitzball on it, i loved you could switch characters in battle as well.
  • Rukishou #38 4 months ago

Didn't we already know this though? I was more than certain that it was just going to be a remaster, otherwise I would have been more excited for it despite replaying it and 100%'ing back in 2011.
  • Rukishou #39 4 months ago

@spacedelete Final Fantasy X was and is a great game, but one of the few things people didn't like was the linearity of it. It wasn't as bad in that department as FFXIII, but it might be reason enough to go back even further and make FFIX or, if you can stand the much deprecated graphics, FFVII.
  • xuiton #40 4 months ago

might as well remake 13 while they're at it. se are such a joke. they can't make decent new games anymore, so they keep making remakes or re-releasing the same game over and over.
  • doyourealize #41 4 months ago

@Okamiwolf I'm no fan of FFX, but you can't really believe that it's the first FF with "teenage cliche protagonists" and "fruity...clothing" for men (unless it's the "revealing" that really put it over the top for you). I mean, those things have pretty much been FF's MO since VII.

Edit: Just want to make it known that I'm a huge FF fan, especially 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12. I even enjoyed 13, and while I thought 10 was fine, I have no desire to go back and replay it.

@Okamiwolf It's not as great as 7 or 9,but it's miles better than 8.I hated that emo leonheart or whatever his name was!
