Surprise Psychonauts update announced

Achievements, Mac version, iOS app, more.

A substantial update for the PC version of Double Fine's adventure classic Psychonauts has dropped in from out of nowhere.

The developer today announced that Steam users can download a patch that adds in achievements, cloud saves and modifications that make the game's infamously tricky Meat Circus section a little easy to manage.

On top of that, awesome-sounding private investment outfit Dracogen Strategic Investments has stepped up to help fund a Mac version of the game, available now on Steam and the Mac App Store.

"I have been a fan of Psychonauts and Double Fine for a long time," commented Dracogen CEO Steven Dengler, "and I'm extremely happy to be helping them bring their games to new platforms like the Macintosh. All hail the supremacy of Dragons!"

Finally, there's also a new iOS app up for download. The Psychonauts Vault Viewer lets you view the game's Memory Vaults with newly-recorded audio commentary from creators Tim Schafer and Scott Campbell.

The game originally launched on PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox back in 2005. Not played it? Eurogamer's Psychonauts review should explain why you need to catch up.

Hmmmm - I smell another HD remake in the works!

No bad thing either - Psychonauts rocks! Would happily play one more time in HD!*

*Even if just an Ubisoft style update!

    Mac version on Steam: £6
    Mac App Store version: £7

I'm so happy I'm almost willing to buy them both.

    (Leopard is not supported)

My 5-discs version suddenly feels so obsolete.

And I've got about a tenner in iTunes credit. YES!

got all nostalgic and went to buy it on XBLA and its disappeared. dammit, want to play it on my 55inch TV, not my 17 inch laptop

God bless your fanboy soul, Steven Dengler. This is how interest in a franchise is reignited, Witcher style. In a related note, I hope this marks the coming of a new Psychonauts.

    @vibroguy HDMI/VGA/Audio cable + wireless controller = profit.

This means they haven't forgotten about it hopefully, means a HD remake and a sequel

I have the PS2 version. *shiver* But I recommend an Xbox Live download of this or a Steam download. It's a really interesting game that deserves a sequel.

This game was my cheapest ever paid Steam download. There was a day when it cost just 1 pound.

Shame that Psychonauts doesn't actually work on the 360 if you use a VGA cable though. I've had the Xbox Original version on my hard drive for about two years and haven't been able to play it for eighteen months. Seems like Microsoft expect me to buy an HDTV with HDMI support instead of using an HD monitor that uses VGA. Thank Christ I've got the PC version which looks far superior anyway. Would love to hear news of a proper HD update though.

Psychonauts would make an amazing animated movie. Coraline already nicked the visual style!

Also, never realised the meat circus had this 'hard' legend behind it... did people get really angry about that? Passed me by!

@Spong: I proposed that setup in order to connect a PC to a big screen TV, not a 360. I usually connect my gaming laptop to my 60" screen that way.

Even if tey decided to to a Res 4 style "remake" I'd buy it. This is one of my all time favourite games. It seemed like a kids game but when I first played it I remember thinking just how cleverly put together it was. Light years ahead of what was out at the time.

Christ, substantial update indeed... I'm downloading it now on Steam and it's 2.5 GB!!! :o

I read "Surprise Psychonauts..." and nearly splurged across the monitor.

    @loboMuerto
My bad, I thought you meant the 360 because it was a response to the game disappearing from XBLA. For the PC version though, your plan is faultless :)

    /pedantic mode on

"modifications that make the game's infamously tricky Meat Circus section a little easy to manage."

    Should that not be easier?

    /pedantic mode off

    Still, woo!

And to think I've been happy to sign off all my correspondence with a simple "yours". I clearly haven't been trying hard enough.

Welcome news. Can we expect the patch to land outside of steam ? My GOG version would be grateful indeed.
  • Alestes #22 8 months ago

I already have the PC version, but if the game is re-released on PSN I will buy it right away.
  • TelexStar #23 8 months ago

I loved Psychonauts but I think those memories are best left in the past. I never played Beyond Good & Evil when it originally released but I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the HD remake on XBLA. In my opinion, it was a waste of points.
  • Lemming81 #24 8 months ago

    PSN release please!
