Nintendo and Epic Games hacked

Most sensitive details safe.

Hackers have been dangling their 'phishing' rods over the European Nintendo website and the Epic Games website.

Both companies explicitly state that credit card information is safe.

"We have learnt of a possible phishing threat to users of the European Nintendo website which we are currently investigating," Nintendo Europe notified.

"The protection of our customers is our utmost priority and so we have taken the precaution of immediately shutting down some parts of this website until further notice.

"We would like to reassure you that we do not hold our customer's bank, credit card or address details on the European Nintendo website and so this data is not at risk."

Epic Games responded via a forum message posted on behalf of studio CEO Tim Sweeney.

"Our Epic Games web sites and forums were recently hacked," admitted Sweeney. "We're working on getting them back up and running and expect everything to be restored in a few days.

"The hackers likely obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plain text passwords weren't revealed, but short or common passwords could be obtained by brute-force attack. Therefore, we're resetting all passwords.

"The Unreal Developer Network (UDN) has not been compromised," added Sweeney. "None of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other sensitive customer data."

Last week, Codemasters admitted suffering a hacker intrusion. Credit card information was not compromised, Codemasters explained in an open letter to customers.

You would think that Microsoft would be a target too, given their history? Or maybe, they're just secure. ;)

    For fuck sake.

This is old news by the way. Since then Bethesda have been hacked, in particular I think Brink users have something to worry about. :S

    @raloB

Give it time. I honestly don't understand what the hackers think they are doing. Unless this is a conspiracy theory come true, about governments trying to take control of the internet, by causing stuff like this. Yup, can't wait for Deus Ex 3 XD

Microsoft is kind of the holy grail really in terms of major hacks and data theft given its all centred around Live logins. Corporate logins for licensing, hotmail, msdnm, xbox live all log in with a windows live account.

I suspect that they have entire offices of people simply watching their network 24/7 due to the value of it.

    All 6 of them?
  • Caimbeul #7 12 months ago

For fuck sake, why are they being such cunts? There are many better and cooler things that they could be doing with their knowledge/skills than trying to rip people off by stealing personal information. WANKERS.
  • MrFlump #8 12 months ago

@raloB - Brink users probably should be thinking about things just now given the recent tweet by lulzsec

"Big lulz coming up in the near future. Time to show these bitches how it's done. #Brink #Bethesda #ZeniMax"

Can't you hackers just like fuck off?

Why not try bringing down an extremist hate website or Saudi prince's bank account.
  • L0cky #10 12 months ago

Yeh, as much as people like to make fun of MS and their security (myself included), I think they'd be far more secure than the people who got hacked recently.

    But never say never...

Yawn. This is very tedious now. I wish Nintendo would give us some idea of when we can sign in again. It's been like this for days now.

    Hacked is the new overheated.

Also, phishing is not a website break-in attempt.

Good point - have edited intro accordingly.

Are these people trying to kill off gaming? It already has a bad rep in the media already. I predict a headline in the sun " if you play videogames your credit card details will be stolen". Hackers fuck off will you.
  • WinstonChurchill #14 12 months ago

    @customfirmware

If this is what it takes to stop gaming becoming about motion control and casual experiences, maybe we just have to take that hit.
  • MrFlump #15 12 months ago

@customfirmware While I dont agree with the methods employed by the hacking groups, it does highlight some major failings in the security of our data with some companies with the ease in which they are simply being torn apart from a security point of view. Some of the hackers are just doing it "for the lulz" but you have to worry about where we'd be if someone with a more sinister agenda had the same access to these guys...
  • Roarster #16 12 months ago

The amount of these hacks are scary but it's even scarier thinking about the amount that go completely undetected. We only knew about the Sony attack because they noticed it which seems to have made everyone pay attention but you can be sure our data has been exposed plenty of times without the site even being aware.

I used to like groups like Anonymous which are trying to take down evil organisations (HB Gary, Westboro Baptist Church) but no they are seriously pissing me of. These hackers claim to be the protectors of freedom of speech and stuff, but now they are just simply doing it for greed. Also note that LulzSec is warning that they will be hacking bethesda...

Someone also tried hacking my Windows Live account yesterday...it's a wonder anyone stays online any more with these cunts doing this. >_>

If Phising were anything remotely noteworthy, World of Warcraft would be in the news all the time, because I have about 20 "Blizzard account deletion" letters in my spam folder, and I don't even have a blizzard account.
  • kangarootoo #21 12 months ago

What this thread needs is a post from arcam, talking about how hacking is the modern realisation of democracy.
  • Ror1984 #22 12 months ago

Tim Sweeney, Tim Sweeney, dah dadadadaaah dah da daaaaah da...

Sorry, what were we talking about again..?
