Mafia II: Director's Cut sighted

2K to repackage mob saga?

Last year's open world crime epic Mafia II is getting the Director's Cut treatment, if a new retail listing is to be believed.

According to an Amazon page, the special edition will include the core game, three additional story packs and four car and clothes packs.

That's all the information that's currently out there, but it's a fairly safe assumption that those story packs are existing DLC expansions Joe's Adventures, Jimmy's Vendetta and The Betrayal of Jimmy. We've dropped publisher 2K a line for clarification.

The game originally launched last year on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Eurogamer's John Teti wasn't a fan, but perhaps some extra content might make things a little more attractive.

Awesome game first time round, for anyone who's not played it they can only be in for a real treat.
  • Paul_cz #2 1 year ago

True director's cut would be if they got Dan Vavra back, and let him and the team finish everything that got cut from the game. And no, those three sorry ass DLCs aren't that.
The game was still great, but if it came out as it was designed without cuts, it would have been a freaking masterpiece (like the first one).
    Oh well.
  • BBIAJ #3 1 year ago

Uhm... The Betrayal Of Jimmy was a PS3 exclusive, yes?

Does this mean the Director's Cut on 360 will finally allow those that bought it for that system to play it?

I doubt it though, seeing as how The Joker remained a Sony exclusive when the GOTY edition came out...

Totally agree, NOSAVIOUR. The Eurogamer review was a joke.

How EG gave 4/10 to both Mafia and Mafia 2 is truly amazing when you consider all the other dross that's been reviewed at 7/10 since then.

Been waiting some time for this news.
  • metalangel #8 1 year ago

Bought the two (360) DLC in the big sale at New Year's. Waiting for the game itself to drop to about Ģ15 now. Considering playing it all in chronological order too (Joe's adventures after the first few of the main game)

Was really enjoying this right up to the next to last chapter. It's probably me but I've tried and tried so many times to complete the first part of the chapter but I keep getting wasted once I'm in the warehouse. Why couldn't they have put a checkpoint in once you fought your way into the warehouse? I don't think I'll ever be able to finish it. Such a shame as up until this I thought it was one of the best games ever.
  • BBIAJ #10 1 year ago

    @Arkwright:

Once you've cleared the docks, drive a car into the water!

The warehouse door will have closed when you respawn dockside, but the door to the office at the top of the stairs is now glowing, so enter in there, take cover behind the desk or filing cabinets, and try taking out the boss from there, and the other guys as they enter the office.

With any luck, he'll run around from the main balcony to the catwalk opposite the larger windows, giving you an easier shot.
  • othelaatko #11 1 year ago

Arkwright: Yeah this part was pretty hard for me too, then i create a strategy: When you get to the warehouse - quickly rush to the far end of the building, there are only two enemies waiting quickly shoot them. Keep in such position, that enemies canīt shoot you from the upper level. After some time they will keep comming from the stairs - hide behind some columm and just waste them. after that only about three guys remain upstairs including the main guy. Tjis is a bit tricky but definatly possible with a few tries. Try to kill the main guy "molotov throwing" as first from the three and after that itīs easy.

    Paul_cz: +1

From the gutted content to the weak 'humour' (seemingly trying to make it into GTA 1950), publisher interference ruined this game.

The likes of John Teti and Ellie are some of the main reasons Eurogamer reviews mean little to me these days.

Pretentious overlong intro, followed by missing the point entirely, forgetting why the average Joe plays video games in the first place. Go work for Edge or something.....

Anyhow it was pretty clear no matter how good the released game was, that it was butchered for the sake of creating some DLC. In an ideal world the directors cut would be as the finished game should of been. Now that would have me buy it a second time around!

  • Hunam #15 1 year ago

I found the Jimmy's Vendetta DLC really poor to be honest. Without the story and with the repetitive missions it's just lacks any fun at all.
  • ISmoke #16 1 year ago

Mafia 2 was one of the best games i played last year. Enjoyed every minute of it.
  • orangpelupa #17 1 year ago

if this director cut version using UPDATED game files, then its a bad choice to buy. You wont able to use Mods.
  • billy-beauts #18 1 year ago

A really great game. Think Sopranos meets GTA. EG's review is an absolute disgrace.
  • Arkwright #19 1 year ago

    @Orthelaatko and @ BBIAJ

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to give it another shot. Fingers crossed. I'll let you know how I get on.
  • solidSnake04 #20 1 year ago

EG must have something against Mafia...its a masterpiece.
  • X #21 1 year ago

Hmm, so buy the original really cheap now and buy the extra DLC (possibly) or pay more for the DC version.

    Not sure.

    "Eurogamer's John Teti wasn't a fan"

That 4/10 got under my skin a bit because after playing the game I could see that it was completely unjust. So I thought I'd google John Teti and I was a little relieved to find out he is a bit of twat. Only problem is that it does seem pretty unfair on the developers who rely on fair reviews to garner sales. I hereby request that Teti exlusively reviews only Activision from now on. What do you say EG?
  • loboMuerto #23 1 year ago

I hope this time they bother to include a proper ending. Great game, though.
Eurogamer, I think it's time to include some antispam measures in here...
  • filipo #24 1 year ago

4/10 wasn't fair. Not as much as the 4/10 Gestalt gave the first Mafia, but still daft.
  • dingo75 #25 1 year ago

The PS3 exclusive DLC is available on Steam since New Year by the way.
  • jablonski #26 1 year ago

"Only problem is that it does seem pretty unfair on the developers who rely on fair reviews to garner sales. "

Eh? So you think low scores should be outlawed so devs can keep in business?
If that was the case, very few devs would give you any more than the bare minimum to get by.

I welcome low scores for average games.
With the crappy score scale used by most reviews, there can be an absolute gulf of difference between a 7 and an 8
  • arcam #27 1 year ago

I don't think he was saying that. Everyone welcomes low scores for poor games (except publishers and some editors...).

But in a world where 5/10 and lower are hardly ever used (and I think everyone can see the low end of the scale is not used often enough), Mafia and it's sequel both getting a 4 looks very out of place.

But hey, as we all say, a score is never 'right' - maybe both the reviewers really did think the Mafia games are in the bottom 5-10% of all games.
  • jablonski #28 1 year ago

"I wouldn't mind if the reviews were actually consistent, but some games get slammed for not being original, then others don't. Which is just one example of what is wrong with it all."

How can you be still annoyed at a Rachet and Clank review, of all things?
  • asphaltcowboy #29 1 year ago

Surprised so many people enjoyed this... it was really boring...
  • DiamondIce #30 1 year ago

Mafia 2 was an enjoyable game that suffered from a few problems. A 4/10 game suggests serious issues - I never found anything in the game that would pull it down to that rating. I have played some bad games over my gaming life but this was not one of them.

I didn't like the DLC all that much (Joe's one) because there was no cut scenes and it all fault too arcadey.
  • andywilkie35 #31 1 year ago

Immediately regret buying it - still haven't got the DLC and now it's coming in a standard edition where anyone who bought it before now feels like they've been raped.

This is why I don't buy games on release anymore. Imagine Portal 2 and L.A. Noire will have the "content held back for extra fleecing" treatment too so will wait until next year when they get their inevitable "full" releases.
  • metalangel #32 1 year ago

@andywilkie: That's why I still don't have Mass Effect 2. That's why I didn't touch any of that RDR DLC (zombie stuff aside, 90% was contet just being enabled in multiplayer). Hell, EA have oh so generously plonked a few spawn points into some of the single player levels from Bad Company 2 (Heavy Metal) but for once DIDN'T charge 800 fucking points for the five minutes that took them.
  • glaeken #33 1 year ago

Sounds like the version I have been waiting for. This one always sounded like it would be worth waiting for the GOTY edition.
  • addman #34 1 year ago

Downloaded Mafia 2 on a recent steam sale and I have to say it's one of the best games I've played so far this year. Great atmosphere and story! Also downloaded Joe's adventure after I finished the main game, only got one playboy poster left to collect :) The 4/10 from EG just astounds me because I also downloaded Kane&Lynch 1 and 2 on the square-enix sale and those were only half as good as Mafia 2. Now I REALLY know you can't really rely on reviews, it's just too subjective.
