DC Universe Online UK pricing confirmed

Pound the opposition.

It'll cost UK PC and PlayStation 3 gamers £9.99 a month to play superhero MMO DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed to Eurogamer.

A three-month subscription costs £27.99. A six-month sub sets you back £49.99.

As previously announced, there will be no annual or lifetime subscription plan for the PS3 version "at launch". On PC, a 12 month subscription costs £89.99, and a lifetime subscription £129.99.

Both the PC and PS3 versions of the game will be sold for £39.99 in shops, and both come with a free 30-day subscription.

DC Universe Online will launch in the UK on 14th January 2011.

You forget to mention that you also get a FREE rubber phallus to attach to your head for being daft enough to pay so much to subscribe to a tried to death VIDEOGAME.
  • Jolly_Armadillo #2 1 year ago

Tried to death? I thought it was quite good, and if I hadn't so many other games to play I might have got it.

Anyway 1 months free sub = -£9.99 off buying price so technically game is £30 and you pay £9.99 for first month asw
  • NotSoSlim #3 1 year ago

Tried to death? Only City of Heroes succeeded so good luck to them. They have a buyer in me that's for sure
  • CosmicFuzz #4 1 year ago

    Can't wait for this!

I don't understand people saying Fail either. It's an MMO, it's how it works... People in the beta are saying it's great.
  • makeamazing #5 1 year ago

I really dont know what is wrong with some corners of the console user market, it sounds like they have never played or have knowledge of a MMO game before.

I am surprised at no lifetime sub for PS3, that would suggest to me they are worried it wont sell too well on that platform and dont want to tie anyone into a service that could be stopped... but i would be shocked if both PC and PS3 are not using all the same data centers and servers etc.. so i wonder why that is... EG should ask!
  • DavoTheDiv #6 1 year ago

That price structure just ain't gonna work for console gamers. Console gamers are a different breed to PC gamers. Console gamers wash, PC gamers don't ; )

ralob - "You forget to mention that you also get a FREE rubber phallus to attach to your head for being daft enough to pay so much to subscribe to a tried to death VIDEOGAME."

why must you be such a smart-arse, negative, know-it-all?

i'm willing to bet you know nothing about the game. i'm sure you haven't played the beta since you are way too tight to pay for PSPlus. well i have and i enjoyed it. i will be buying it and look forward to a massive game of goodies versus baddies. there isn't another game like it on PS3.

if this kind of game isn't for you then fair enough but don't belittle those who chose to buy it.

my only decision now is do i recreate my flying, lesbian, robot villian Lesboto in a her glory or do i create someone new in the full game
  • NotSoSlim #8 1 year ago

    @makeamazing

Apparently PSN wallet would not allow it. Good call in my book as going by ignorance when a console MMO has the audacity to charge this may not sell well

I am buying and may take up 6 month option.
  • Shikasama #9 1 year ago

The uproar about having to pay a subscription fee is pretty damn funny. What did people expect?

Wonder how many of the people bemoaning the sub fee think Project ten Doller is essential for EA to maintain server costs for second hand users.
  • CaoSlayer #10 1 year ago

"People in the beta are saying it's great."

Im in the beta, is not that a great game. Is not totally bad, but there are better action MMOs out here with and without fee.

    DDO for example.
  • Vanmunt #11 1 year ago

If you don't want to pay then go and play marvel universe.. oh thats right it was binned.. dc beta is great, game pre ordered from play for £29.99 so take off one month = £20.00.. nobody has a gun to my head after one month if I don't want to pay.
  • BraveArse #12 1 year ago

Seems like a pretty standard MMO pricing deal to me, and a very good MMO at that. I'll be buying it. My poor shrivelled old claws can't handle playing MMOs with a mouse and kb anymore and DCU is wonderfully well set up for a PS3 pad.
  • mrvinny000 #13 1 year ago

I have never enjoyed MMO's & the Ps+ beta has given me the opportunity to confirm the mindless button bash & mission system is just as crap as any MMO i have tried in the past. For 40quid / 2.50 a wk i'd rather get Sky Tv & watch that than be bored by this drivel . On ps3 its got too many glitches & on a 40" HD tv the mission / info boxes are un-readable , on SD they are jusr blurred messes . After the "Addicted to Games" show the other wk i'm struggling to see why folk are obsessed with MMO's as they are like CoD & Fifa , just generic rehashes of the same games in different skins.
  • GamesConnoisseur #14 1 year ago

No sale for me, I m intrigued and interested in this DC Universe and even got beta installed, but no special pricing for PSN+?

Also think not as much a safe bet for console crowd to set on standard MMO pricing package, and need to be more inventive. AS the key thing I believe is to REEL is the console crowd to the IDEA of MMO and then establish subs after you got them on the hook.

Pricing problem at the very first hurdle will just drive away 90 percent of potential members.

WILL be very delighted to be proven wrong, and see PS3 subs outcrowds the PC subs, anyone betting on that?!
  • Markusdragon #15 1 year ago

£9.99 a month seems a tad on the ludicrously expensive side...

But then, I'm a confirmed cheapskate, so what would I know?
  • butler` #16 1 year ago

    Marketing fail.

Why price a lower quality product considerably above the monopolistic market leader?
  • Power_n_Glory #17 1 year ago

That does sound steep. £9.99 a month is steep for one game.
  • actionfitz #18 1 year ago

so... more expensive than World of Warcraft?
somebody is very confident in their game.

    Here's hoping they deliver.
I'll be waiting on positive word of mouth and a seriously shit-hot demo/free trial.
not getting burned again by an empty hype machine of an MMO.
  • j-bo #19 1 year ago

What folks don't realise with MMOs is theyre actually very good value if you get a lot out of them. Everyone balks at paying 10 quid a month, but in the past when I've played MMos it does tend to replace a good wad of your general game purchasing, so instead of shelling out 40 quid a month on a new game, you may only buy one every 2 - 3 months if youre engrossed in an MMO.

(which to some degree is my main gripe with MMOs in that they do tend to block out too much of my gaming time - but having said that they do provide things, such as a persistent world, a vibrant online community and social elements, and substantial depth and longetivity, which other games struggle to compete with at best)
  • Wash #20 1 year ago

I quite like the beta (ps3), but i think i'd prefer it on PC. Interesting to see how it fares, i dont think its particularly expensive - probably in line with other MMO's, think i'd prefer a set fee to a free to play model with added costs for storage space to special helmets.

  • Bobbus74 #21 1 year ago

Well if you enjoy this type of game and forking out a load of cash each month to play it then good luck to you. On the other hand, you could actually get a life...
  • BraveArse #22 1 year ago

"On the other hand, you could actually get a life..."

    Oh the irony...
  • makeamazing #23 1 year ago

That price structure just ain't gonna work for console gamers. Console gamers are a different breed to PC gamers. Console gamers wash, PC gamers don't ; )

Hold on a minute, i play games on both the console and PC... omg somethings wrong :D - i guess using your quote, i wash some of the time ;)

You seem to think that console gamers are console gamers exclusively? That is not true, people who like to sample games of different genres dont limit themselves to a single platform, and with things like GOG and Steam, why would anyone in their right mind not play PC games as well as console games. You would only be missing out on some of the best games made in the last 20 years.

Its probably a good thing this is coming to PC as well then, as from what i have read from the small numbers of users on the EG forums, it seems they just dont get MMOs at all.

Curious to see how the subscription models works with the PS3. Obviously the Xbox has it but that's a different kettle of fish.
  • slickster #26 1 year ago

im so tempted to get this game loving the beta on ps3. if i do get this i will stop giving money to sony for playstation plus dont want to pay for both.
  • Power_n_Glory #27 1 year ago

I pay for Xbox Live and I don't mind forking out £40 for the year. But for 6 months it's £50 for this DC game. I'm a console gamer and this game caught my attention but not for £9.99 a month.

Nice to see Sony skanking console owners with no yearly or lifetime subscription, the people least likely to pay to play.

Makes Live look cheap in comparison.
  • NotSoSlim #30 1 year ago

Yet to play online you must spend 40 quid where this is down to personal choice.

Nice comparison sloppy with the long tinge of a fanboy adding nothing to the discussion.
  • slippysloppy #31 1 year ago

@NotSoSlim Eh? What are you talking about, I have a PS3 and have been playing the DCUO Beta since it was released.

My point was for PS3 owners like myself pay to play will be a tough sell, the lifetime or yearly subscription would be more attractive but this is only offered to PC users.

And yes, although 360 users have no choice if they want to play online most gamers will look at the facts £40 for all games or £120 for one game. In black and white that's exactly how it looks, though admittedly all over PSN games are free to play.

  • Power_n_Glory #32 1 year ago

@NotSoSlim….a one off £40 payment each year for a great service isn’t bad. But £10 a month for 1 game equals £120 for the year and that doesn’t even include the price of the game. I also own a PS3 so this isn’t fanboy talk. I just can’t agree with paying that much for 1 game especially when there are other games I’d like to play in the coming year.
  • Vanmunt #33 1 year ago

    @ALL 360 TARD'S

It is nice to have a choice though, at least that is something you don't have to worry about next year... as it is yet another game that is not on xbox.
  • Power_n_Glory #34 1 year ago

So you’re telling me you’re worried about paying £40 for a year’s subscription for Xbox Live but are quite happy to pay £120 a year for 1 game.

It’s not a question of the console you own, its simple math. If your happy to pay that then fine, but I can’t justify.
  • Bobbus74 #35 1 year ago

Look at all the nerds getting defensive over their superhero game. Shame you fuckers can't socially interact with real people in the real world. Fucking losers.

Yeah that's it, click on that little red minus icon you sad fucks.
  • slickster #36 1 year ago

@scotty268.. yes but xbox360 been doing that for 2-3 year with final fantasy and with your £40 a year xboxlive.
  • NotSoSlim #37 1 year ago

    @Sloppy and PowernGlory

Fair points but as I said if you want to play online with 360 you have to pay a MMO is giving you the choice so there's a big difference.

    Agree to disagree :)
  • razzastuta #38 1 year ago

I own both Xbox 360 and PS3. I'm not a PS3 Plus user but am a gold member on Xbox Live. To my knowledge, outside of the £40 a year I pay, I don't pay for anything extra accept for DLC (and that was Mass Effect 1 & 2 only).

But to pay almost £100 (depending on the choice of sub you take, in this example, two 6-month subs) to play a game in which it's success not only depends on it's gameplay but online users does sound a bit steep, especially when the PSN is essentially free to use immediately when taking a PS3 out of the box.

Wouldn't it be better to offer a free 6-month subscription to first time buyers then let them at least choose to continue the sub from then on? This would at least tempt me to buy the game and see if it's for me - but at the sub price it's offering, especially coming out at the start of a year that is going to be economically damaging for nearly every working household in the UK (with the VAT increase) means that whether I want this or not, I simply can't consider it.

Game plus 6-month sub could potentially cost me £100 - to me, it's not worth it, despite being a comicbook fan and I really was interested in this. Ah well, I certainly hope Batman: Arkham City doesn't get any pricing ideas....

    @Scunty

thanks for listing the two games I can play on my 360 next yearr.. most kind, I nearly forgot as there are so many.
  • NotSoSlim #40 1 year ago

    @razza

Top point but people pay over 100 quid on a limited edition version of a 6 hour game so its not unreasonable to charge for a MMO for months of gameplay.

    All personal choice tho
  • razzastuta #41 1 year ago

    @NotsoSlim

Your point is also a good one, I acknowledge that there will be some people that will have a "must have" attitude and will get it regardless....but I look at it like this: I got Mass Effect 2 for £35. I was lucky enough to get 2100 MS-points as a gift this year so that effectively provided most of the DLC for it too, but I did pay for half Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Overall, I played ME2 for 200 hours on 5 playthroughs - and will be going to do a sixth playthrough soon for about £45 in the end, so I consider that very good value for money. Clearly not everyone might be so lucky with MS-points as I was, I admit, maybe Mass Effect is a poor comparison since DCUO is an MMO, however.

I've never played an MMO before, and DCUO was the first one that properly made me consider it, but with it's current pricing structure, I'm going to have to miss out on this one.
  • Power_n_Glory #42 1 year ago

Only the real hardcore fans pay £100 for limited edition games and I think this DC game will only appeal to hardcore MMO fans at that price.

I mentioned Xbox Live because I was making a point about being the type of gamer that doesn’t mind paying for a service if the price is right, but then the typical fanboy comments start with the silly comments about PS3 being free and blah blah but that just proves my point. If the majority of PS3 owners feel a certain way about paying for online gaming then how are they going to feel about paying for 1 game?

I think the price structure will put some people off (like me) and the reviews haven’t even hit yet.

Also, good point from Razza. I try before you buy would be good.
  • Snowymonk #43 1 year ago

It shocks me that a company cannot make a business model for an online MMO that doesn't require a monthly subscription. Games such as Guildwars, D&D Online, LOTRO have managed a free version. If a publisher is serious about attracting mass appeal, they need to price it accordingly.

Game looked interesting but with a monthly charge, I have enough games already that I can do online that dont charge me for the priviledge.

No buy for me until it goes free-to-play.
  • NotSoSlim #44 1 year ago

My only gripe us charging more that WOW. Could it be free? Yes but then poeple will still moan.

Stick feel the client could be free and make money of monthly charge
  • makeamazing #45 1 year ago

your sony fanrat shit is choking me. 360 gamers wont need to subscribe to a shitty little game about men in tights when we finally get gears of war 3. Oh and a decent racer in forza 4 lol.

Seriously, are you some angry with the world teen who is a fanboy by any chance?

So all the dickheads on here saying microsoft rip us off charging for a complete service at roughly £40 a year are gonna go and buy one game for £40 and then pay a tenner a month just to play it hahahaha. You sony fanrats look awfully silly right about now lol

Seriously you are a muppet arnt you. If you dont understand the difference between an MMO sub and paying to play any game online, then i am really sorry for you, there isnt any way i can get your head out of your own arse. Its just stupid how some people are ignoring the fact that MMO subs have been around for many many years on the PC, but it comes to the PS3 and its childish little rants like this that make me worried what will happen when people like you get to voting age.
  • slippysloppy #46 1 year ago

Why is it if you don't sing the praises of Sony on a Sony related thread you're considered a 360 fanboy? Same goes for 360 threads, if you don't show the Microsoft love you're a Sony kiss ass. It's a real shame, especially for those who have both consoles and can see both sides of the fence. The other thing I can't understand is why some people are so keen to put money in Sony and Microsoft's pockets and criticise anyone else not so keen to do so. Surely it's a personal choice either way.

And if I'm a fanboy of anything it's tits. Big tits. Especially big tits.
  • Vanmunt #47 1 year ago

    @SLIPPY

everybody knows small tits are better.. you big tit fanboi.
  • slippysloppy #48 1 year ago

@Vanmunt But you're still a fanboy of tits. And like the PS3 and 360, small tits big tits - I like both. I just prefer the 360, errr, I mean big tits.
  • makeamazing #49 1 year ago

I am not sure i should be +1 this behaviour from two tits ;)
  • Vanmunt #50 1 year ago

I am partial to both, but not on the same person...
  • slippysloppy #51 1 year ago

I dunno, depends if they had 3 tits like that bird from Total Recall. The main two would have to be the bigguns though.
  • Vanmunt #52 1 year ago

  • ircaddicts #53 1 year ago

its soe so its a cert that they WILL ruin the game sooner or later and IT WILL be sooner I'm sure of it
  • levitate #54 1 year ago

ITT: Xbox360 and PS3 are like two big, warty, tits on console gamers' chests. An MMO that has a subscription fee causes uproar among the ignorant console gamers' and their warty tits.

In other news: It's raining outside.
  • GABWAB #55 1 year ago

I've been playing DC Universe Online Beta PS3, great game but i can tell you guys it's definitely not worth £9.99 a month, i played WoW about 2 years ago & even then it was 10 years in front of where DCUO is now & they want you to dish out £40 for a game disc that will be no good after the 30 day free online pass expires (£40 disc that has no single player), unless you then pay £9.99 a month to get back online, oh yeah! you then have to put up with all the crappy microtransactions for ingame items, great! cheers SOE!
Don't DC realize the economy has gone to shit! & people who work there asses off with bills to pay simply can't afford to spend that much for ONE game... wtf!
Ifully understand that it's a MMO game & it would be fine paying £30/£40 a year but not £100/£120 a year for a new console MMO game that may crash & burn a few months of release... I don't want to offend anyone here but the more people that stand up & fight against these Rediculous prices the more chance something may be done about it to make it fair for everyone to enjoy gaming online...
