MOH sets franchise pre-order record

Tali-blam!

More people have pre-ordered controversial shooter Medal of Honor than any other game in the franchise's eleven-year history, Electronic Arts has announced.

Danger Close Studio and DICE's Afghanistan FPS is one of EA's top "pre-selling" action games ever, apparently.

Earlier this month EA said MOH must sell more than three million copies or there will be no sequel.

MOH hit the headlines when it emerged that players can assume the role of Taliban soldiers in the multiplayer portion of the game.

It had already attracted attention for being set in an ongoing real life war.

A multiplayer beta is due to hit the PC on 4th October. PC gamers will be able to download the beta client on 1st October from the official site. The beta will end at 11.59pm PST on 7th October (just before 8am the day after in the UK).

The game is out in Europe on 15th October. Tom went hands-on last week.

What's that? You'll be able to play it two weeks earlier at the Eurogamer Expo 2010, which takes place from 1st to 3rd October at Earl's Court in London. Hurry? Madness.

Tempted to pre-order just to get the Battlefield 3 beta, but October has too many other good games to buy first.
  • el_pollo_diablo #2 2 years ago

Well I think pre-ordering games is crazy, but I'm clearly in the minority.

Was pre-ordering even around/ as popular for most of the previous games in the franchise?

    More tenuous records please!
  • ChthonicEcho #5 2 years ago

The irony is that people are not pre-ordering because of Medal of Honour, but because of the Battlefield 3 beta.
  • landlock #6 2 years ago

Well I'd hardly call pre-ordering pointless because

    A) you can snag a lower price before they increase the price later. Places like GAME/Shopto will honour it.

    B) getting games delivered to your door, two days early (see. Shopto) is never a minus.

The whole pre-order thing is a fairly new (and pointless) phenomenon so this means nothing.

    @el_pollo_diablo

people who preordered Duke Nukem Forever in 1997 would think otherwise haha

I pre-ordered this ages ago for the PS3 and I'm tempted to double dip like I did with BC2 and get the PC version for the MP.

I don't see it as pointless - higher profile titles usually have a little extra (even if it's not that exciting and you're gonna be a day-one buyer it's something for now't ), and certain retailers won't stock niche titles without a prebook.

Worse than those who pre order are those who buy a console for a game that will be released in 3 years.

Pre-ordering can be a sweet deal if you do it right. I pre-order all my games. They always come at least a day early to my door, I also get double reward points and occasionally I get extra content for my games. It's not like it's any hassle either. It's a win win in my opinion

In my country Gamestop has a "trade two old games for 1 preorder deal" and that's why I got this preordered.
  • rivuzu #15 2 years ago

No brainer. Was on the pre-order list as soon as it was announced.
  • Eurolamer #16 2 years ago

Afghan and pre ordered after hearing this news.
  • geeza2020 #17 2 years ago

I still won't be buying it though.
  • Merlynov #18 2 years ago

Wasn't this the game you could play the beta on by pre ordering? If so you could go on play.com, pre-order, receive beta code, play beta and cancel pre order without any cash leaving your account!
    Puts two and two together........
  • Quixz #19 2 years ago

I pre-ordered 2 copies. I can't wait to play this game now that i'm done with REACH!
  • ShovelyJoe #20 2 years ago

    @quixz or whatever
I am sure there must be some logic but i have to ask - why pre-order two copies?
  • el_pollo_diablo #21 2 years ago

But... but what happens when/if the game arrives on launch day and it's shit? Why wouldn't you wait for reviews?
  • AidyD #22 2 years ago

This article doesnt even attempt to hide the blatent marketing from EA... Probably most sequels get higher pre-order numbers year on year if they look half-decent...

I bet the stats are exactly the same for MW, GTA, Halo even Dynasty Warriors. But EA decided to create a headline out of it, with alittle help from some friends.

But oh well - Game looks good.

According to vgchartz MOH has about 650k in pre-order as of September 25. This number is the US only. Even if you include UK, Europe and Japan I would estimate about another 200k for a total of 850k.

@Merlynov - that was Bad Company 2. If you pre-ordered the PC version from Play.com (possibly the other versions as well, not sure) you got access to the multiplayer beta. Cue many thousands of people ordering and subsequently cancelling the game. I believe they stopped giving out codes after a while.
  • Soton4084 #25 2 years ago

Well I'm not preordering as I've heard the beta was poor. Obviously it was only a beta and the issues might very well have been addressed, but why take the risk? I learnt my lesson the hard way when I preordered Mercenaries 2.
  • Dave52 #26 2 years ago

The problem with pre-ordering big titles (I made this mistake with MW2), is the price. You pay to get it day one, then some supermarket does some sort of loss leader deal and you find you could've got it day one for £10 cheaper...

Looking forward to seeing it tomorrow at the Expo though - see you all there (although none of us will know who we all are)...
  • ghiest #27 2 years ago

Wonder if they counted the people who pre-ordered just to get into the early beta, then played and promptly cancelled their pre-orders because the game is dire?

    Because that's what I did :)
