Cave Story DS on the way?

Indie classic goes portable.

Acclaimed homemade platformer Cave Story is heading to DSiWare, according to a hint in the new issue of US mag Nintendo Power.

A grab of the contents page published on its site reveals a screen from the new version of the game, but gives no further information.

The work of solitary Japanese developer Daisuke Amaya, the original Cave Story launched on the PC as freeware in 2004.

A remake of the game is heading to WiiWare later this year. Eurogamer's John Teti gave the import version a hearty 9/10 in April.

We've been in touch with publisher Nicalis to shed some light on things. We'll update if it gets back to us, or when the magazine hits the shelves later this week.

Can't they think of Europe first?

If a game ever deserved a full cartridge release, it's Cave Story. Ok, I'm a but grumpy cos I've only got a DS Lite (and therefore no DSiWare) but it really is brilliant. Oh well, I'll just have to carry on playing it on my Mac.

Whatever happened to the WiiWare release for this in Europe?

I already played the original PC version but I was looking forward to playing this again with upgraded graphics and a big screen. :)

Yes -- how about concentrating on getting the European WiiWare release out first??!

It's been bloomin' ages since the US release now.

Incidentally, it's also worth mentioning that anyone after a portable Cave Story might want to know that you can play it on PSP with Half Byte Loader.

(HBL, for those who don't know, is a homebrew solution for PSPs that runs on all firmwares (and I think all models) and operates completely in user mode. This latter point is particularly important because it means there's no chance of it bricking your PSP, interfering with PSN or your purchased games, and most importantly no chance of it being abused for piracy. Check it out.)

I agree with the majority here: WiiWare European release or Get the Fuck Out.
