EA reveals Shadows of the Damned

Suda51 and Mikami's game out next summer.

Veteran developers Suda51 and Shinji Mikami have unveiled their latest project at EA's press conference in Tokyo.

Titled Shadows of the Damned, it's billed as a "psychological action thriller". It's about a bloke called Garcia Hotspur whose true love is abducted by demons and dragged to the underworld. Naturally, he races off to Hell to get her back.

"This game has a punk rock edge to it," said said Resident Evil 4 director Mikami. "You can see Suda's trademark flair and style everywhere in this game. There are lots of light moments as well."

"But of course, you can see a lot of influence from Mikami-san in the core gameplay mechanics," No More Heroes creator Suda51 chimed in.

"This game is really intense, however you also see some light moments as well. It's a very dark game. And it's one of the greatest games I've ever worked on in my lifetime."

During the speech, still images from the game were shown on the big screen. One depicted some sort of giant horse with a human face being ridden by a demon and giving off loads of sparks. There were also shots of Garcia, who appears to be into studs, leather and big guns with skulls on, and has a big scar down one side of his face.

After this press conference attendees got to watch a trailer in which our hero whacked loads of monsters in the face, declaring, "My name is Garcia Hotspur, hunter of demons."

Other trailer highlights included a hot chick with no top on, another hot chick wielding dual weapons, giant horned demons, spooky lighting and an absinthe vending machine.

Shadows of the Damned, which Suda51 asked gamers to shorten to Damned or abbreviated to DMD, is slated for a summer 2011 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game's reveal trailer is below.

Well all we can do is speculate I suppose. Damned makes me think of the Damned United So im guessing the main characters Brian Clough, manager of Leeds utd. So im guessing it's Brian trying to kick the shit out of his own shadow? I think im onto something...

I find your lack of further information disturbing.

Though, it's Suda51. Just picture grotesque lols, and you're part way there. Should be good.

As a West Ham fan I am not playing a game where the main lead is named after Tottenham!

    Edit: Snip!

And, agreed with Raining_Upwards... can't say I'm particularly taken by this at the moment.

There's a trailer for it at VG247, if you're interested.

But of course, you can see a lot of influence from Mikami-san in the core gameplay mechanics

Tank-like controls and a load screen at the end of every corridor?

    I kid, I kid.

Also, what's with this thing of posting a news story with no info, then going back later and updating it? It's no different from idiots who post "first" before later editing it.

PS3 and Xbox360? Really? Right now it's looking like an average Wii title....

Ha, I'm more entertained as the article grows.

"Shadows of the Damned, which Suda51 asked gamers to shorten to Damned or abbreviated to DMD" - drawing upon a phonetic abbreviation of another popular Capcom title to perhaps raise it's awareness?

Know what, I want to play a game where you play one of those people running the hell away from the Demons and whatnot. ""My name is Garcia Hotspur, hunter of demons and the child of multiple cliché's" is all very well and good, but how about a survival game where you have to survive, escaping god knows what from god knows who coming out of their god knows where with a god knows what attached.

Still... Suda51... purchase for that reason alone, which makes me admittedly a massive raving fanboy.

    @Meho
Good call! I'd never heard of it till today. The review makes it sound... tingly. Definately getting on that!

The protagonist of this game reminds me of the movie Desperado for some reason.

For some reason, every single game Mikami has been a part of has had terrible art design or mostly generic trappings. Maybe it's a conscious decision to keep things recognizable rather than flamboyant, but every time I enjoy what he does in gameplay terms, I'm let down by nearly everything else surrounding it. This seems to fall into the same. Even Vanquish's hyperspeed death duels and shot-kickback-holy-shit! mechanics are kinda drowned in those cold, clinical environments.

    "I'm Garcia Hotspur/I am the super-spurs/everybody knows I'm a football connoisseur"

Ahem. For the record, I'm an Ajax fan and you can all rejoice when we get heavily thrashed by Madrid tonight. Oh, this is an article about Demons, right?

    Sold.
  • Silent-Hal #17 2 years ago

This.. was not at all what I was expecting. I was wanting something more Resident Evil / Silent Hill and less Devil May Cry...
  • Torkin #18 2 years ago

I'm disappointed... I was looking for a survival game from great names like Mikami and Yamaoka, and found another action game with average graphics.

I'll have to wait and see how it progress...
