Italian city upset with Gran Turismo 5
Includes some pictures of flags or something.
Sony has come under fire for including a representation of Piazza del Campo, a medieval square in Siena, Italy, in Gran Turismo 5.
The Consortium for the Image protection of the Palio of Siena has had a moan in the Italian press (thanks Kotaku) after it noticed the Piazza in videos of GT5's kart racing sections.
The Palio of Siena is a mental-sounding bareback horse race contested by the various districts ("Contrade") of the city, and it's the use of Contrade flags that the Consortium's wound up about.
"You cannot use images of Contrade, in this case the flags, without authorisation," Consortium CEO Anna Carli explained. According to the original report, Carli and friends will ask Sony nicely to desist from doing so and then break out the lawyers if the Piazza remains.
You can read more about the Palio di Siena on Wikipedia, although don't look at all the gratuitous photos of the flags or Carli will get upset.
This isn't the first time Sony has annoyed somebody with a videogame recreation of a real-world landmark. In 2007 the Church of England had a gigantic moan when it discovered Manchester Cathedral not only used in Resistance: Fall of Man, but host to a giant shootout.
The Church eventually forgave and thoroughly patronised Sony over its naivety and we all lived happily ever after.
Gran Turismo 5 is due out in Europe on 3rd November.

No one is hurt and it will not harm anyone.
There is always someone with too much time and no life, that wants to winge about ANYTHING they can...!!!

when are people going to learn that we all need to get along by being especially sensative of the anal and intolerant feelings of others.

Substitute the Euros with dollars and that's pretty much how things work on Capitol Hill.

Sony - what were you thinking!? You can't just go round using flag and site of historical interest with a big horse racing and business behind it.
Unless you pay them for it, of course.

I am a big fan of Sony's first party stuff and PS3, but they are a massive, profit-making multinational company and people should be concerned when they ride roughshod over the interests of cultural and religious institutions, not blindly defending them.

They take their shit pretty serious down there.
Each flag represents a quarter of the city and they "fight" for honour in that horse race.
It's more than a mere "flag".
And just because you don't know about it doesn't mean normal people don't because the thing is pretty famous!
I think I read about it in TIME magazine when they did some special on Siena a while ago (travel tips).

I am pretty damn sure that a lot more people have heard of the Palio di Siena than GT if you don't make that poll on a gaming website.
Here's a picture of the Palio from 1546. They've been doing it for a while...
