W40K Space Marine heading to PC

In addition to consoles next year.

THQ has announced that its upcoming third-person shooter based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Marine, will be released on PC in addition to PS3 and Xbox 360.

Developed by Relic Entertainment, Space Marine is now due out in "early 2011" on those formats and puts players in the space boots of a Space Marine on an Imperial Forge World that is being invaded by Orks.

In a statement marking the announcement, Relic general manager Jonathan Dowdeswell paid tribute to the "loyal PC audience" and said they mattered a lot to the girls and boys at the developer.

Not much is known about Space Marine yet but we're all expecting that to change soon. In the meantime check out our Space Marine preview from E3 2009 and the fancy trailer from last month's Los Angeles jamboree below.

Hell yes! No I don't need to buy a 360 later this year! Let's just hope the port is good...
  • sneetch #2 2 years ago

Sweet, removed from my console and added to my PC buy list. :)

There'll be a lot of burning, killing and purging in '11.

Will play this on my 360... my PC is for the W40K MMO.

    A lot of W40K goodness... I feel 14 again :)

Relic have and always have had an underlying understanding and respect for the PC platform. Even conducted surveys not so long ago asking what kinds of preferences PC gamers would require if the game were ever to come to the platform.

Nothing but admiration for Relic right here so this is fantastic news.

I hope this is good, if they get it right it will be all kinds of awesome sauce.
  • rhinoxious #11 2 years ago

Cool, but I'll stick to the console version.

With the advert in front of it, that trailer does remind me how closely positioned the star/war-craft and warhammer/40K worlds are.

Presumably, Blizzard were heavily influenced by Games Workshop when they made Warcraft back in '94 (Warhhamer originally coming out in '83 and being in its pomp by the early nineties), and then both borrowed heavily from similar sources ever since - such as the Tyranids and Zerg both being giger-esque creations of startling similarity.

I cannot wait for this game. If it were any other developer, i'd be saying 'please be good, please be good', but relic is up there with Bioware, Blizzard and Bungie for me, always delivering.

    OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW HAPPY I AM!
  • Gastrian #14 2 years ago

If its keyboard and mouse I'm getting it on the console, if I can use my 360 controller I'm getting it on the PC.
  • darkmorgado #15 2 years ago

Hopefully you're not just up against the Orks... I for one would love to smash in some Tau, Tyrannid and Dark Eldar faces
  • darkmorgado #16 2 years ago

Plus.... the SC2 ad on the front page is wrong (sort of). The game may well be "in stores now" but you can't buy it till tomorrow!
  • hiddenranbir #17 2 years ago

They must be worried about sales so will try to pull at our heart strings saying they care about us.

  • Sharzam #19 2 years ago

I doubt it will be a rushed port, relic may not be at blizzard or valves level of commintment to the PC but there pretty damm close.

I always buy for PC if there is a choice, 2 words POWER and STEAM.

Third person games are better with a pad often, but there is always a choice on PC and consoles feel like there running on steam power sometimes, oh iam so funny.

This game has potential but the same could be said of any game at this phase of development of course so just a matter of wait and see.

seems like we'll only be fighting orks...
    which is a shame...
but then again maybe they'll do a space marine II and III if this one is a success...
  • taurus82 #24 2 years ago

Ahh, the ORIGINAL Space Marines not those Gears or Killzone wannabes.
    Will be buying for PS3.

If they tweak the bolters to actually fire like bolters, instead of uzis, then I'll get it.
It may seem like a small thing, but bolters fire huge fecking rocket-propelled bullets! It shouldn't fire like a submachinegun on speed and take half a magazine to take down an enemy!

Keep it canon or sod off and make up your own backstory!

    @Sharzam

lolwut about a developer that does RTS almost exclusively not being dedicated to PC? I expect the only reason this game wasn't coming to PC was THQ.
  • Ryboy #27 2 years ago

My PC is going to fucking annihilate this game. Can't bloody wait!
  • _LarZen_ #28 2 years ago

What a waste of time and money, hope they sell like crap and finaly stop using time on pc ports.

Had completely forgotten this was in development, glad to hear it's still in progress (though the gameplay footage I saw a while ago looked fairly far on so not sure what they'll still be doing for the next half a year).

Purge the unclean. Burn the heretic. With my mouse \o/
  • sneetch #32 2 years ago

    @Death-Jester

Although it won't stop me buying it I know exactly what you mean.

I always thought Bolters should go "whump whump" not "pewpewpewpew" if you know what I mean. :) They have autoguns for the assault rifle/submachine gun style weapon if they want them. I particularly agree when it comes to damage; bolts are 20mm (ish) explosive rounds, a human who gets hit by a bolter shouldn't stand up again, a regular orc might take one or two hits, a nob could take a good few. I especially hope that they don't make bolters weak in order to force you to melee.

In the WH40K lore (if you'll indulge my nerdiness ;) ) a single Space Marine squad is the equal of hundreds of orcs, the tabletop game has kinda lost that feel and games like Dawn of War don't really represent it, I'd like to see heroic Space Marines in a game for once, where you wade through a hordes of orcs that tries to overwhelm you.
  • Kageroth #33 2 years ago

Yay! The next yay comes when/if they announce a co-op and marine chapter choice, the smurfs may be the space marine poster boys, but I prefer the stubborn and shamed dark angels myself. I'll have to wait and see how the game plays before I choose a platform, always nice to have the option of a PC version though.
  • Ryboy #34 2 years ago

Ignoring poster cunt 1. Yasizu and poster cunt 2. Cosplayhouses. May you both fuck off and die painfully of cancer.
  • ReaperOscuro #35 2 years ago

Agree completely with death jester and sneetch: calling it space marine equates to being loyal to the canon.
But why always bloody space marines and orcs?!? Whats wrong with the awesome eldar (of course harlequins would be ftw but that will only happen when i own the franchisw), dark eldars and tyranids? Always bloody marines, orcs and chaos...

....still, if they appropriately portray lets say a terminator marine, let you have a dreadnought in the squad, perhaps some power fist splattering, or maybe even taking down one of the smaller orc titans...then id guess that would be OK.

Put in an unlockable mini-campaign of grey wolves (or was it knights?) vs daemons or tyranids and im yours :)
