Uncharted 2 officially revealed

Among Thieves brings stealth, Polo.

Sony has lifted the lid on the sequel to its PS3 action-adventure, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, via a trailer and a Game Informer magazine cover.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves "revolves around the 13th century explorer Marco Polo and his voyages", according to Game Informer's teaser.

The magazine also says that "free climbing" and stealth will be the major gameplay additions to the third-person adventure from the Jak & Daxter developer, Naughty Dog.

A short teaser trailer has also been released, showing hero Nathan Drake struggling through a snowy landscape to retrieve some kind of ancient artefact. Going by this and the cover, Uncharted 2 will swap the first game's steamy jungle for a cold, mountainous setting.

We can expect more detail when Among Thieves gets its "world premiere" a week on Sunday - December 14th - at the 2008 Video Game Awards.

"revolves around the 13th century explorer Marco Polo and his voyages"

Shouldn't that be his alleged voyages? ;)
  • Xerx3s #2 4 years ago

Yeah, that's what the small minded of his time said.
  • clockworkzombie #3 4 years ago

Naughty Dog have come a long way from Keef the Thief. If only they could rescue Crash.
  • Zomoniac #4 4 years ago

Woohoo! Uncharted rocks! But as long as they're making this, they won't be doing a new J&D. Which makes me sad :(
  • bad09 #5 4 years ago

Nice, can't wait. Uncharted was really involving and has been one of PS3's highlights, even if it was just the bastard son of Lara Croft and Marcus Fenix.

Duck behind cover, shoot, climb, solve puzzle, rinse and repeat...

It also had some of the best writing ever seen in games, I think, so I can't wait to revisit the characters in a new adventure. Hooray for more good quality gaming!

Uncharted was ace so i'm looking forward to this, little bit worried about the stealth gameplay though it seems to mess up lots of games.

Nah stealth sounds cool, sneaking around ruins hiding from pirates can't fail!

No bloody monsters this time - as thats when I stopped playing.

    Better I hope.

Quote "even if it was just the bastard son of Lara Croft and Marcus Fenix. "

But then is doesnt have the sheer geekiness cheesey drool factor of kids over a sprite with tits, nor the homo erotic macho rubbish of theother. Uncharted was ace - people go on about innovation nowardays and doing things new. Personally I dont care - if you can make a game as good as uncharted using things already around then go for you life - if its tried and tested, use it,, and make it better. Just like uncharted did. Loved it. Cant wait for this.

    Way to spoil mate ;)

I actually liked those bits, was quite a genuine shock!

I wasn't knocking it, just pointing it out ;)

I'm the only one who liked the zombies in the first game
at least it was something different, otherwise you would have been shooting endless goons the entire game and nothing else

    +1

Gameplay needs to be fun, everything else is irrelevant or a hygiene factor at best. I don't care if I'm doing the same thing for the hundredth time in a row, as long as it's a nice action to perform (but then again, I am a fan of JRPGs).

Uncharted and MGS4 are the best games I have played in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Looking forward to this.
But they don't even talk release dates. They are only 'working' on this. So it could easily arrive well into 2010.
  • Les #16 4 years ago

Liked the zombies as well. Sure they're ridiculous but then, dying and then restarting at the previous checkpoint is even more ridiculous. Was a nice change of pace and the dark corridors were some of the most tense gaming sections since Resident Evil GC as far as I'm concerned. Though I've learned from R2 that my RGB Full setting probably contributed to this more than it should have... ;)

Uncharted is the most fun I've had as yet on ps3, great game, great story, totally immersive environment. I'm really looking forward to playing the new one, I hope it lives up to the original and improves on it..!!!

"even if it was just the bastard son of Lara Croft and Marcus Fenix"

Well it was better than both of them, so who cares?

    Hahahaha, top work.
  • kangarootoo #21 4 years ago

I thought the zombies were ok too. Not perhaps actually "good", but they didn't break the gameplay the way so many other monster moments do in other games. They were handled pretty well, with the game being very generous when you were fighting them. I think perhaps once or twice I got annoyed, but in the grand picture of things I didn't mind them really.

    No it wasn't.

    @negotiator

Looking at your post in the sales thread and now this one, it seems to me you are in serious need of a life.
Why do you have such a hatred of Sony?
  • DFawkes #24 4 years ago

    "stealth"

Instantly guarantees it won't be as good, if this is a mandatory section that heavily punishes you playing it like you would play Uncharted. Keep it optional, and you might not break the game. Might.
  • gallow #25 4 years ago

Sorry for the lack of spoiler tags. 0 of 10. Will try harder next time.

"Two bad ripoffs of good games awkwardly bolted together does not equal one good game."

Err...but it is good? Maybe even better.

    @gallow

S'ok, but you can edit your earlier post to avoid further damage :)

    EDIT: you did do...fair enough!

I got a lend of a PS3 from a friend to play MGS4. While what I have to say about that game would clog a few servers, I must say that immediately afterwards I played Drake's Fortune and found it to be a much, much better game: fun, fast, and witty - everything a videogame should be - unlike that hulking behemoth, MGS4.

Why am I thinking of Tomb Raider 2?

Uncharted was great. One game I actually replayed twice to get all the medals. That was before the trophies, though :-(
  • kangarootoo #31 4 years ago

    "No it wasn't."

    Err... yes it was?

    This is fun.

Uncharted + snow = my new most eagerly anticipated game of next Christmas.
  • drumbaby #33 4 years ago

Sequel to the PS3's best game...can't wait!
  • niz #34 4 years ago

I hated the zombies! I still haven't finished the game, stuck at 90% or so. I haven't been able to survive the zombies and I'm playing it at the easiest difficulty level... Also, too much shooting in general for my liking, but the general exploration and climbing stuff was amazing.
  • kangarootoo #35 4 years ago

    @niz

I thought overall that there was a bit too much shooting for my liking too, but it didn't break the exprience for me. Not necessarily that there were too many shooting moments, but more a case of them going on a bit too long when they did come around.
  • Triggerhappytel #36 4 years ago

Awesome news - we all knew it was coming, but an official confirmation is always nice. Uncharted has its flaws, but is still definitely one of the best games I've played this year, and the sequel will be one of my most wanted for next year (assuming it is coming out next year - have they given a prospective release date yet?).

I'm guessing it'll be out in time for Christmas, although it'd be really good if it came out in the summer - I think the game would get a lot more sales this way, too, rather than coming out in the traditionally very busy pre-Christmas rush.

The only thing I was a little concerned about in the article was that it said there will be stealth. I hope it's not mandatory - I hate it when action games throw in token stealth sections, and I think it rarely works unless the game is built from the ground up around stealth mechanics.

I haven't watched the trailer yet as I'm at work, but will do so when I get home later.
  • Widge #37 4 years ago

Loved the first one. Really hoping that the puzzle quotient is upped a little bit, would be nice to discover the odd stumper in this game.
  • Les #38 4 years ago

If they make stealth an integral part of the gameplay it might turn out alright. Stealth and exploration go well together.

I hope they'll implement an enemy banda and t-shirt colour randomizer as well to increase the variety a bit (though judging by the teaser that might turn out to be a fur hat and mittens colour randomizer).
  • kangarootoo #39 4 years ago

"If they make stealth an integral part of the gameplay it might turn out alright"

Yeah, good stealth gameplay can be ace. But it takes a lot of balancing, so games that stick one stealth level into otherwise stealth free gameplay tend to end up with quite an unfinished result.
  • VandelayIndustries #40 4 years ago

Wonderful! Loved the first one. It featured a great mix of gameplay, was better written then most games and had some of the finest voice acting in video games. Also Naughty Dog hit the ground running on this one too which bodes well too.

    Maybe multi-player this time?
  • superjag86 #41 4 years ago

    More Uncharted? Woo!!
  • Widge #42 4 years ago

No need for multiplayer with a game like this, it just doesn't lend itself to it.
  • chessboxer #43 4 years ago

  • VandelayIndustries #44 4 years ago

    @Widge

I was thinking of something along the lines of Gears for PS3, might work.
  • Ducklord #45 4 years ago

    Yay!

And I actually found that the zombies in the first game were a good addition - just as I was getting tired of the regular gunplay, it throws a completely different tactic at you.
  • suicida #46 4 years ago

Awesome. The first one was my GOTY 2007 and I'm really pleased the sequel has been officially announced... Even though we all knew it was inevitable.
  • GamesConnoisseur #47 4 years ago

I loved Uncharted and played it again to get trophies, sad perhaps but hell another excuse to play it again! Certainly looking forward to the sequel but I disagree with the Marcus Fenix/Gears of War bashing as this and Tomb Raider is a good games in their own right and so in Uncharted.

Just fanboy who can say the other AAA game on rival console are really rubbish, yes true if you really not into it and dislike the genre or the setting (sci fi or modern).

Hurry up Dec 14th and let us have a good peek!
  • JohnnyFireBlade #48 4 years ago

Shouldn't the sub title be "Amongst Thieves"?
  • El-Dev #49 4 years ago

@farticusmaximus, well it's a year older than the new Tomb Raider and is much better as for it being awkwardly bolted together, well that's your opinion.

After reading the article I started playing it again last night, awesome.

Multiplayer would be good but the aiming would be a bit too slow for an MP game, unless they changed it. Maybe a co-op story, one playing as Drake and another as the blonde bird.
