UK charts: Red Dead Redemption is top

Split/Second, Prince of Persia appear.

A whopping 65 per cent of the pie went to Xbox 360, leaving the remaining 35 per cent on PS3. Were stock delays to blame?

Last week's new arrivals Split/Second: Velocity and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands also placed highly: Black Rock's racer took fifth and Ubisoft's film accompaniment took ninth.

Sony's ModNation Racers zipped into 10th.

Filling in the top-10 gaps were previous leader 2010 FIFA World Cup in second, Just Dance in third and Wii Fit Plus in fourth.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Lost Planet 2 and Alan Wake were sixth, seventh and eighth.

Brilliant game, and even though it's glitched to hell and back, it's still a brilliant game !
  • Goodfella #3 2 years ago

Oh dear Lord, the Digital Foundry analysis of RDR is published today isn't it?

    /Hides behind bunker.

I couldn't get to a shop on Saturday, and by Sunday every shop in Brighton that sold games was out of stock - HMV, GAME, Game Station, Blockbuster, Argos etc

I wanted to trade in some old games for it, but I guess I'll get it online and trade them in some other time. Damn it, everyone else who actually has it sounds like they're having fun!

    Oh, and yee haw!
  • Goodfella #5 2 years ago

RDR is a superb game, Hypercube.
  • Monkey_Puncher #6 2 years ago

    Great game!

Nice to see Alan Wake still holding in there, though Lost Planet 2 WTF?
  • Kanselier #7 2 years ago

Not enough love for Split/Second in the comments.

  • Paperghost #8 2 years ago

well deserved. the multi is brilliant fun, too.

Full top ten as reported on MCV:

    1. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar)
    2. 2010 FIFA World Cup (EA)
    3. Just Dance (Ubisoft)
    4. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
    5. Split/Second (Disney Interactive)
    6. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA)
    7. Lost Planet 2 (Capcom)
    8. Alan Wake (Microsoft)
    9. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (Ubisoft)
    10. Modnation Racers (Sony)

I honestly thought SS:V would enter a little higher given all the PR its had. I guess the selling power of fitness games is just something my brain needs to come to terms with in the charts.

Believe it or not, if you play with human types Lost Planet 2 is an absolute stormer of a game. With just the AI, it sucks.
  • Goodfella #11 2 years ago

Wtf, -1 for saying 'RDR is a superb game.' ?!
  • Clive_Dunn #12 2 years ago

Don't worry, I gave you a -1 for moaning about it.
  • LHH #13 2 years ago

Loving it so far, my own personal Unforgiven game. Soundtrack is awesome too. I would go so far as to say this is what GTAIV should've been ... ha!
Incidentally, on saturday they were sold out of the 360 version in my towns HMV, Game and Sainsburys. Eventually got mine in Tesco which was a bonus as it came with 800 free ms points which I will undoubtedly spend on ME2 and EA's $10 scheme of DLC

I haven't enjoyed a game as much as RDR in such a long time - even though my trusted stead randomly collapsed and died when we were in the middle of nowhere last night. It was emotional.
  • Doctor_What #15 2 years ago

"A whopping 65 per cent of the pie went to Xbox 360, leaving the remaining 35 per cent on PS3. Were stock delays to blame?" Given that my local HMV had 20 copies on 360 and 3 on the PS3 - yes, stock shortage was to blame.
  • anomagnus #16 2 years ago

i wanted something different, so i went for split/second instead of RDR.

I've never played a racer like it. Every course, every race, feels like a race from one of your favorite action movies. The truck survival event, or the helicoptor missle dodge races are simply unreal.

Last night, as i recovered from sunburn, i had a moment of utter gaming bliss, when, in last place, i triggered a full bar explosion, and crashed a giant needle tower down, which collapsed onto of the 7 cars in front me, i over took them, blasted into first, and drove up the interior of a still burning and collapsing tower, exiting it through a series of jumps and ramps over a city centre, before landing, drifing round a few corners, and taking first place.

I'm on episode 10 now, but this game is simply the best racer i have ever played.

RDR is just fantastic, it just cemented in my mind why Rockstar are the kings of the sandbox genre.

    Forza will never die!

Read Dead is a really great game. The game looks amazing and there is always something to do. I start off trying to begin a mission and the next thing I know I am riding accross the plains hunting for deer or trying to stop someone from getting hnaged. I find that mission quite hard by the way. I cant imagine this game is going to be beaten as this years GOTY if a better game comes out this year then truely this will be one of the greatest gaming years ever. Civ V is due which I am excited about but I dont think it will reach the critical mass to beat Read Dead.

And of course Yee haaaa. Thank you Rockstar.
  • I\'mListening #22 2 years ago

My copy doesn't arrive until Wedenesday...As for GOTY, what about SMG2- that is doing pretty well on metacritic too?
  • wizlon #23 2 years ago

Split/Second did pretty well, amazing game if you don't have any sort of heart defect. Multiplayer isn't anything to get excited about but the single player is nuts on the road mad!
  • sfp_noodle #24 2 years ago

The stock delays pretty baffling really. Why is it only the PS3 version does anybody know? RDR was sold out everywhere on the PS3 in Leicester. Only a few independent retailers had stock but it was only for the 360. I guess the only positive in that is that I can read the DF article later and decide which one is worth going for. Exams finish next week can't wait to get my game back on :D
  • brseg #25 2 years ago

Is it not a bit worrying that Split Second sells less than Just Dance and Wii Fit on its release week? Or perhaps this is Nintendo's TV advertising blitz paying off week after week.

Anyway, I loved Burnout3 etc, but I am not totally convinced by the gameplay in SS (from playing the demo). Its just that you're not really racing the cars much, and I dont know when to do powerplays. Then I spend half the time drifting, rather than racing. And the other cars catch up anyways.... have I missed the point?! The graphics were pretty amazing though.

    (hello by the way!).
  • Hypercube #26 2 years ago

the whole PS3 vs 360 stock thing - in Brighton, all the 360 stock was sold out in shops, but I saw people buying the PS3 version in Blockbuster and HMV (successfully, I might add).

No idea if it was an imbalance of initial stock, or of sales. The bloke who was in front of me in HMV buying the PS3 version did look bloody smug when I was told the 360 was out of stock. Git.
  • Monkey_Puncher #27 2 years ago

When I went to get my copy on Friday they had shelves full of PS3 and 360 Red Dead's in all the stores I looked in. So that would be HMV, Game and Gamestation.
  • anomagnus #28 2 years ago

    OK, more split/second goodness.

If you're a real hardcore racing fan, that likes GT5 and Forza, i dont know, you may not like SS. It might be too light weight, too basic. If oyu like arcade racers, that are load, brash and mental, and full of speed, this is THE game.

Regarding the racing, dont be fooled by the demo. The elite races, at the end of each episode to qualify for the next, thats a step up in difficulty. There will be plenty of racing in that, careful corners, expert drifts and dodging explosions at all times.

    Its brilliant!

Good to see SplitSecond at least in the top 10. I would have bought it in a couple of weeks.
  • beastmaster #30 2 years ago

Been playing Split/Second as I've not the the time time chunk I need to have with RDR at the moment. Split/Second is brilliant.

Seems as though a lot of people are talking about RDR being GOTY. I've got 2 contenders for me personally. Bayonetta and Just Cause 2. I know they're 2 totally different games but if the graphics are anything like JC2 in terms of quality, add a Wild West setting and add R* then it sounds like an epic win.
  • danathjo #31 2 years ago

still waiting for a Blur demo on PSN before decing on getting Split Second or not
  • brseg #32 2 years ago

Yes, Blur reviews should be coming in soon. I didnt play the beta but it looked good, and the beta itself is a positive sign that the devs really want to nail the gameplay. The screenshots of Blur look a bit samey, I hope theres some variety.

I'll pick up JC2 when its reduced. Again the demo convinced me it wasnt a def day one purchase… it felt a bit like a tech demo to me, plus that god-awful voice acting.

I doubt I can resist RDR for long.
I also have F1 2010 in my sights for september.
  • jefranklin18 #33 2 years ago

I managed to pick up two copies for the PS3 on Saturday in Lewisham (Ellie's favourite place :) without any issue. One was the Collectors Edition (and was last in the store), and one was the regular flavour - that was for a mate's birthday.

    RER-OW!

OMG what is that? A fucking cougar?! NO! My horse is dead, you mother fucker DIE!
  • TopKatt #35 2 years ago

Couldn't see any copies of the PS3 version in the Bromley branch of Game today, even Amazon is saying that the game will be in stock on the 25th of May. What went wrong with the distribution of the PS3 game???

@brseg: another big positive indicator for nailing of gameplay, is the level of activity (and the kind of comments made by Bizarre) in their own forums. They're really locked in and fired up, when it comes to community/feedback, I'm convinced.
  • secombe #37 2 years ago

Ironically my local Tesco had 20+ copies of RDR (which I don't want) yesterday morning...yet were sold out of Split Second (which I do want)
  • Hulle #38 2 years ago

Where the hell is Monster Hunter Tri on that list? That game deserves to sell a shitload more than most of the games on that list..
