Witcher half-price on Steam for a day News

PC News by Robert Purchese

28 October, 2009

There is 50 per cent off the price of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - Director's Cut on Steam until tomorrow.

CDProjekt's popular role-playing game costs, therefore, £11.49.

The Enhanced Edition of The Witcher, released September 2008, fixes many of the bugs and niggles that hampered the game at launch. As such, the mature Polish adventure comes with a hearty Eurogamer recommendation, especially at that price.

Check out our review of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - Director's Cut to find out more.

Pretty obvious Bioware saw this as a way to do proper narrative choices in games. No such thing as good/bad kind/jerk. Just choices.

Oh yeah, the whole witchery malarkey is quite good too! A good SP RPG! Play this to warm up your Dragonaging next week!

Damn, already bought Borderlands and STALKER on Steam this week, and I'll have to buy Dragon Age soon (although not from Steam).

This is a good price but sadly I'm gonna have to pass it up - hope they do a good deal like this on The Witcher again sometime early next year.

edit: I just realised all four of those games - Borderlands, STALKER, Dragon Age and The Witcher - are all kind of RPGs. Just a few years ago I didn't think I liked RPGs, I guess I finally realised what I was missing out on.

I bought this just tonight, awesome. Too bad my connection has been slow lately (2Mbps) so it's taking forever to come down. 10 hours and it's not even at 50% yet. I wish my company would give me the 20Mbps I pay for.

@skillian: then maybe it's time you play Morrowind (if you haven't already)

At the risk of sounding like a philistine, I'm a bit worried that I'll struggle to enjoy it after Oblivion. I loved Oblivion, and in fact it was probably that game that taught me I'd been wrong about RPGs.

Trouble is, I've heard thousands of comments from Morrowind fans who thought Oblivion was a train wreck, and not many who actually liked both games. Hopefully I'll get around to it sometime, but with 150+ hours banked in Oblivion, it just seems like a daunting commitment in my mind.

Woo, cheap Witcher. Sold! And no stupid DVD to get all scratched and ruined like the last one.

Nice little (well 14Gb download, not so little) preparation for Dragon Age next week too.

@skillian: I know what you mean. I didn't like Oblivion that much. Many people who liked Morrowind have some problems with Oblivion, because it makes a lot of things differently. It's more open, but you are less free overall. It has random dungeons, but a lot less variety. It's bigger, but there's basically nothing in the open areas. In Morrowind, the cool thing was that when you found a dungeon, you would say "I wonder if there's anything weird in there?" and explore it. In Oblivion, there is none of that, because dungeon items are randomized and therefore just standard equipment (the unique items came from quests). It's like in Morrowind the designers want yo uto explore, while in Oblivion they just want you to do quests, and will give you no reward for simple exploration.

Overall, I like Morrowind better because you can approach it from a "no quests" point and you'll still be able to see most of it. If you ever decide to try it out, keep that in mind.

Thanks for that, you do make it sound appealing.

I should say that only about 30 hours of my Oblivion playtime was with the Vanilla game, but the other 120 was with a large number of mods, which made exploring much more perilous but also more exciting and rewarding.

The fact that you can approach it from a "no-quests" perspective really does make it sound like my sort of game.

I was more than happy to explore most dungeons in Oblivion, the random loot was good enough for me!

I bought this mainly because I have wanted to play it for a long time, but also because it's a good introduction to Dragon Age.

@Eraysor: of course, random loot was good for me too. It's the reason why I lasted 120 hours in Oblivion despite all its problems. But it does wear thin, especially when you never get any unique item... my original idea was to find and explore all the locations in the map before doing any quests, but in the end i got bored by the dungeons being all the same, so I left the whole land between Bravil and Kvatch almost unexplored.

Other than those already cited, the main difference I felt between Morrowind and Oblivion was the sense of terror in Morrowind earlier on. You were always in danger of straying too far from the beaten track and being punished for it (which makes the speedrun of Morrowind even more impressive...).

Morrowind also felt like more of a connected consistent world and, probably in part because it wasn't fully voice acted, had a lot more meaty dialogue, which added to the world no end.

Anyways will be getting Witcher when I get home, which along with Stalker Clear Sky and Ballard of Gay Tony tomorrow means its quite a heavy week for me and DLC. Guess there's worse things in life tho!

I guess it's too much to ask for a link to the steam page within the article itself?

I agree the lack of unique loot bar a small number of items was a bad design decision. I was glad Fallout 3 had those unique weapons and things like the T-51b armour. The other thing that made me more happy to explore in Fallout was the generally more interesting setting, but that's more of a personal opinion.

33% downloaded....zzzz...Looking forward to a nice rpg, even if I don't get around to it before Dragon Age, still worth picking up for that price.
