PS3 to get exclusive Mirror's Edge DLC

EA and Sony have a special agreement.

Sony has dismissed reports Mirror's Edge will be a timed PS3 exclusive - but said there will be downloadable content available only via PlayStation Network.

Confusion arose last month after German site Heise Online quoted David Reeves as saying the new EA title will arrive on PS3 first.

EA has since denied the claim and now a Sony spokesperson has done the same, telling Eurogamer, "There was a misunderstanding in terms of the quote that Mirror's Edge is to be a timed exclusive on PS3."

So, the game will be released for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 on the same day - whenever that may be, as EA's still keeping quiet.

However, Sony did confirm that although Mirror's Edge is multi-platform, "PlayStation has an exclusive marketing agreement with EA regarding the title."

Plus, the spokesperson added, "Exclusive downloadable content will be offered on the PlayStation Network."

It's not yet clear what form this content will take, or whether Xbox 360 and PC owners will get their own exclusive goodies. In the meantime, you can find plenty of Mirror's Edge videos, screenshots and previews over on the gamepage.

I'm about as excited about this as the exclusive content for GTA IV.

MS and Sony need to grow up a bit
  • miiiguel #2 3 years ago

Since Sony dosenīt like that filthy thing called money, I wonder what the agreement was. If it was M$ itīd be deep pockets and stuff.
  • Dizzy #3 3 years ago

I dunno.. this is pretty big for Sony. A lot of people seem to give this game pretty high marks and it certainly looks very interesting.
  • mcbi4kh2 #4 3 years ago

Why does someone always have to start it?
  • amcd28 #5 3 years ago

    @mcbi4kh2

    Because they can....

Still a box of electronics last time I looked.

Doesn't cook, clean or provide blowjobs, so it's no use to anyone.

    :-D
  • mcbi4kh2 #6 3 years ago

    provide blowjobs,

lol. That would be "next generation".
  • DanWhitehead #7 3 years ago

Just you wait for Firmware v3.0...
  • SeesThroughAll #8 3 years ago

    Stupid deal to make. Meh.

I don't even know if the game will be any good on it's own yet...
  • michaelius #9 3 years ago

Leave that function to XXX-box :)

I'm getting PC version anyway at it will be much cheaper and will support 1920x1200 resolutions instead of 720p :)
  • amcd28 #10 3 years ago

I'd certainly pay the entry price for that then.

Not to labour the innuendo or nowt.
  • penhalion #11 3 years ago

Actually I think Microsoft just reminded EA whose platform their games do best on and let them make up their minds about being exclusive.

I imagine it was like one of those street arguments

MS: "Wot so you dissin' me now"
EA: "Naw man is jus dat Sony got a fit sista innit"
MS: "Ay bruv! I know you ain't sayin' my sista aint fit man"
EA: "Naw naw it's not dat man...it's jus dat I ain't you know daytin' your sis man...an Sony's sis like promis to put it out dere if I like give her a likkle someting..naaawwwwmmmeeeeeeaaannnn! A blooyaa!"
MS: "Aaaaiiittt I naw you mean bro! Go hit dat!.....but bruv I best be getting the package same time as Sony yea!"

ok so maybe they used a little more english........
  • Pedrolot #12 3 years ago

This game is either going to be very good..or very poor.

Either way you look at it, it has alot resting on it's shoulders as it's the first game of it's type technically.

Hype will only lead to disapointment..most of the time. ;)
  • captainrentboy #13 3 years ago

But, I thought Sony didn't need exclusive content on their console :/
Like someone else said, to me, this is as about exciting as GTA 4 getting exclusive content on the 360. And where is my copy of GTA 4? Traded in about 2 months ago, because I was sooooo freakin' bored of it.
This game looks pretty cool though, looking forward to it.

  • berelain #15 3 years ago

cos exclusive DLC worked so well for MS so far, didn't it?

Oh well. I'll still probably pick this up for the 360 instead of the PS3 anyway. Why? Well, just because.
  • Ninja_Tino #16 3 years ago

The joys of owning both consoles!

Sony contridicting themselves again, after claiming they don't need the extra GTA IV or Fallout content, they go and do this?
  • menage #18 3 years ago

    PS3 rocks Xbox lol!

360 has GTA4 DLC biatches FU!

PC runs at 19 trillion megapizelz!

I just wonder if the game is more than a series of linear timetrails.
  • ps3owner #19 3 years ago

    @Pedrolot

Hype will only lead to disapointment... Disappointment will lead to the dark side of the force....

Sony: Xbox... I am your FATHER...
    MS: noooooooooooooo

  • SeesThroughAll #20 3 years ago

Sony contridicting themselves again, after claiming they don't need the extra GTA IV or Fallout content, they go and do this?

This one they could afford, and the other ones were too expensive for them.
  • Steroyd #21 3 years ago

    Marketing deals the new moneyhat.

Boasting exclusive DLC means bugger all if we don't know what it is, it's been over a year since MS shouted from the rooftops about exclusive GTA IV DLC, they marketed the Xbox 360 version heavily around it, 5 months after release... we still got bugger all info on it.

Sony are no better if they pimp this DLC just like MS did with GTA IV, let the damn content speak for itself.
  • Triggerhappytel #22 3 years ago

Exclusive DLC is the new third-party exclusive release.

Not that anyone particularly cares. It's not really going to shift the sales balance in Sony's favour now, is it?
  • SeesThroughAll #23 3 years ago

    Really not.

It's a good sign too, when third party is increasingly more difficult to convince to make exclusives for either side. It means the market is more balanced.
  • Xerx3s #24 3 years ago

Heh. It will be interesting to see what the $$/deep pockets people say now.
  • Steroyd #25 3 years ago

Nothing, this exclusive DLC is part of a marketing deal, not money in a hat.
  • dadrester #26 3 years ago

  • KayJay #27 3 years ago

I am not sure if Sony are boasting about it. Not that they wont, but does anyone really think that they will go to the lengths MS did with the GTA DLC. Getting it rammed down our throats at every possible moment leading up to the release.
    That was embarrassing.
  • miiiguel #28 3 years ago

    ^ don't talk too soon... :)
  • SeesThroughAll #29 3 years ago

What Sony should be doing is filling every shop in Europe with playable PS3 HD displays of LBP, with 4 controllers attached.

Screw dodgy DLC deals. They already have a great first-party line-up coming now, why waste their time with third-party deals?
    Edited by 1 at 02/09/08 @ 10:40
  • Triggerhappytel #30 3 years ago

Yep, Sony should give the very universally appealing LBP an intense marketing campaign. However, I remain sceptical they will realise this and give it the publicity it deserves.

They could really increase the PS3's appeal this Xmas... LBP, Resistance 2, PSN games (Wipeout HD specifically), the Platinum range, Dual Shock 3, MotorStorm 2, etc etc.

But they won't because their marketing dept seems to have all but ground to a halt in the last few years. Put me in charge, give me a good-sized budget and I'll turn the PS3's fortunes around! ;)
  • bioreit #31 3 years ago

    @ SeesThroughAll

Then again, technically, the Microsoft GTA IV DLC money wasn't money in a hat - it was an advance on royalties for that DLC. Much like publishers do for authors. Microsoft didn't just *give* Rockstar cash in a box - it is deducted from future payments. Obviously, though, if not enough DLC is purchased, Rockstar walk away with more money than was due...
  • Widge #32 3 years ago

WHERE on earth is the GTA4 DLC?!
  • NorUraeus #33 3 years ago

The effect of exclusive DLC on sales are probably quite small. So big exclusive DLC (hello GTA) is probably a waste of money, smaller things though, like if they had done a Kratos for SC4 for the PS3, probably mostly pays of in terms of the extra marketing attention it gives.

My guess is Sony has not made a deal with EA here for anything big, more like some custom skins or a special character. Just enough to make the offer a little more tempting, but not something which would cost a lot to create.
  • Zebula77 #34 3 years ago

Can't say I really care that much about exclusive DLC.
I do, however, look forward to this game quite a bit. Early reports are positive and I love the look of it, as well as the fact that it's a first person action game where the onus ISN'T on shooting. (I'm just bored with FPS games, really)
  • TheJuriel #35 3 years ago

We still haven't seen the exclusive content for GTA4, which was a huge huge deal, so... Doesn't exactly seem to be that big a deal.
  • ThePissartist #36 3 years ago

"And where is my copy of GTA 4? Traded in about 2 months ago, because I was sooooo freakin' bored of it. "

I totally agree with that comment, I didn't really enjoy it at all - I'm sure that makes me a gaming heretic.
  • drumbaby #37 3 years ago

"once you've jumped on one pipe you've jumped on them all"

"But they won't because their marketing dept seems to have all but ground to a halt in the last few years. Put me in charge, give me a good-sized budget and I'll turn the PS3's fortunes around! ;) "

Remember they are kinda low on $$$ atm.

TBH I think Sony marketing is doing a good job... much better than MS in Europe for sure.
  • johnnybrn #39 3 years ago

I think the headline says it all 'EA and Sony have a special agreement' which is becoming more and more evident, after the late patch of Burnout for 360 users and now this

Its becoming more apparent which console EA prefers.
  • projectmayhem #40 3 years ago

@amcd28: Actually the PS3 does cleaning for you. It sucks dust from all parts of the room it resides so you only have to wipe clean the PS3 every 4 hours to maintain it's sleek, glossy glowing black plastic finish.

@johnnybrn: About a month or two ago EA said it makes more money from PS3 sales then it does from 360 sales, so yeah, I imagine it is the preferred console. Whatever about favouritism and dividing up the market, business is business.
  • Xerx3s #41 3 years ago

"Nothing, this exclusive DLC is part of a marketing deal, not money in a hat. "

So do you really think that EA doesn't benefit from this? That they are willingly cutting off a massive part of their buyers without any compensation? GTA4 wasn't marketing? Or is it just that when ms does something like this that it's money hats?
  • groovychainsaw #42 3 years ago

Extra content is only a selling point if you tell people what it is before the game comes out, otherwise it is worthless and will have no impact (for reference, see GTA 4 sales, we still don't know what the DLC will be, rendering it not a selling point at all,eh?)
  • Widge #43 3 years ago

  • Steroyd #44 3 years ago

What Sony should be doing is filling every shop in Europe with playable PS3 HD displays of LBP, with 4 controllers attached.

The head of SCEWWS has come out and said that LBP will be their biggest title in all regions this holiday, so I will be surprised if they don't summon all their marketing powers behind it.

    Well they better. *shakes fist*
  • anomagnus #45 3 years ago

i've played mirrors edge, and its a complete let down

firstly, theres only ONE mirror, thats it

secondly, theres not a single issue of edge in the game at all

i dont see what the hype is about
  • BillyBrush #46 3 years ago

DLC is a thing...so fair enuff

exclusive marketing arrangements though, these are quite lame, but prob effective...lots of EA games like Simpsons, Burnout, And this appear on both but the ads show only PS logo at the end and a PS packshot....it's like the new version of an exclusive, which probably costs a bit less to boot....if MS were taking this tact, lordy lord would the piss be ripped outta them..
  • Triggerhappytel #47 3 years ago

    @ Steroyd

That may be so, but I bet MotorStorm 2 & Resistance 2 get more marketing than LBP...
  • Steroyd #48 3 years ago

So do you really think that EA doesn't benefit from this? That they are willingly cutting off a massive part of their buyers without any compensation? GTA4 wasn't marketing? Or is it just that when ms does something like this that it's money hats?

I doubt Sony sent out a "loan" :p

Of course EA benefit it wouldn't be a deal if it wasn't a scratch my back one, but it's too early to say what exactly the DLC is or wether they're being charged for it (I know, I know EA... but Bioshock gives me hope).

Besides if every marketing deal was a moneyhat, then there are a crap load of moneyhatted bundles Sony has done for the PSP.
  • SeesThroughAll #49 3 years ago

That may be so, but I bet MotorStorm 2 & Resistance 2 get more marketing than LBP...

    They're more "mature", aren't they? ;)

MS has been taking this tact for 2 years already.

(seriously, exclusive DLC is just bollocks)
  • SeesThroughAll #52 3 years ago

Only 2 years? MS is well known for funding lawsuits against competitors in the backstages... "Tactics" are their specialty. ;)

The funniest part in this post is that MS DID have a marketing arrangement concerning GTA4 as well, with the media flooded by ads of GTA4 that made it look like that game was a 360 exclusive.

Tatoos are cheaper than exclusives too, I've heard :p

Less "dirty" if MS does it?

lol what the hell, I don't know why I mis-typed "tact-ics" as well.

Fret not, some PC nerds will hack the DLC to run on the PC version anyway.

    Amen.
  • IneptPercy #58 3 years ago

I think to multi console owners DLC can decide which console to buy a game on, people who only own 1 console, great if you get the DLC not enougth of a problem to make you buy the other console if you don't.

Will be the PC version for me.

As for the way things are marketted, that makes a huge difference, GTA adverts made it look like a 360 exclusive meanwhile Burnout adverts looked like a PS3 exclusive, both made a difference on sales on the relervant consoles.
  • el_pollo_diablo #59 3 years ago

"PlayStation has an exclusive marketing agreement with EA regarding the title."

So this just means that all tv ads will have PS3 branding at the start and end.

"Exclusive downloadable content will be offered on the PlayStation Network."

And this might be nothing more than a wallpaper.

Anyway, if it isn't free I won't get it. That's my DLC rule :p "

Yeah, i'm sure that's what it is..... :|

Good old Sony eh? Never do anything bad and wouldn't dream of paying for exclusives.....only the evil MS would do such a thing.

    Damn, it's almost cringe worthy.

Publishers and Hardware manufacturers CAN have good relationships without bribery money being exchanged. You need to get out of your Microsoft mindset.

ehhh. guys, this DLC is also comming to xbox 360. On the same date to.
