Ostrich hammer for Red Faction

April Fool's gag is actually in game.

Volition has revealed that the ostrich hammer seen in its brilliant April Fool's video will actually be included in Red Faction: Guerrilla when it launches on 12th June.

It's an ostrich hammer, basically. You kill people with it. Bird-f***ed!

"As mentioned in the video, without the original thread over on NeoGAF, this hammer would not have been made. I guess there was a plus side to having pre-alpha screenshots leaked out to the internet by mistake," the developer wrote on the official website.

The ostrich hammer will be an unlockable in multiplayer, apparently, and the developer will be revealing more hammer unlocks, modes and changes made during the multiplayer beta over the coming weeks.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is due out for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on 12th June. Check out our hands-on preview and Eurogamer TV Show for more.

And remember to check out the ostrich hammer video. For a site that despises April Fool's day, we like it quite a lot.

My favourite part of that video is the text on the whiteboard behind them: 'FS3 release date...'

I really hoped they'd do this!

If there ever is a book called, "Why the gaming industry never grew up and fps games never reached a truly adult audience", this video will be the core piece of evidence.

What's a 'truly adult' audience then?

I know, it really is sad to see developers putting 'fun' things in their games these days. Can't we all be more serious? I want more realism, screw these fantastical worlds and comical nonsense. I demand every game that involves war and guns be the video game version of Apocalypse Now!

Clearly you are not truly adult. Only true adults can appreciate real video games.

Normally it means dick and fart jokes. Or porn. Or extreme gore. All these are truly "adult".

If there is ever a book called "Why 4thVariety doesn't get April Fools day or self-deprecating humour in general or indeed the difference between first and third person" that post will be the core piece of evidence.

I thought it was funny, especially the "Bird F**ked!" line. There was real joy and conviction in that delivery. :)

If you first make a funny April's fool video and then REALLY put it into the game, then the joke is on you. Because much of the humor in this video is based on the pretense that the people watching it find the absurdity of the situation funny. If the bird really ends up in there, the whole thing is self-parody of a development process gone horribly wrong. We then laugh AT the people not WITH them as before when it was just a joke. "Hey man, that's the Ostrich game, haha, ain't that dumb?"

Ultimately it boils down to: "hey, finally people noticed our game on websites. So you really have to put the bird in there, because it will give us the attention our product requires."

Now tell me, is that a strategy employed by an adult for another adult? Competing for attention with ludicrous means?

If you're such a big mature adult why do you waste your time playing these silly children's video games?
  • 4thVariety #12 3 years ago

There is a subtle difference between buying, playing and commenting on them. Besides, if you always shut up, people will never know there is another demographic besides the ravaging flamebaiting internet fanboy.
  • PearOfAnguish #13 3 years ago

Yes there are only two demographics, raging fanboy and mature adult. No middle ground here.
