Killzone PS3 backed by DLC

As dev costs rival a feature film.

The PlayStation 3 version of Killzone will benefit from downloadable content after it's released, as yet more details sneak out of Dutch developer Guerrilla.

This time it's thanks to an article on the game in newspaper de Volksrant, which reportedly focuses on the comparison between Killzone's costs and scope and that of an upcoming film by Paul Verhoeven.

Development of Killzone on PS3 is expected to top the EUR 16m spent on the film Black Book, according to director Arjan Brussee, who also confirms that around 120 people are working on the game - made famous by its pre-rendered appearance at E3 last year.

Slightly more substantive than the bluster was the news that "the Killzone that is in stores is only the beginning," with GameSpot reporting that, while de Volksrant didn't specify what form they would take, new "chapters" would follow the game's release.

Although the game's still some way off, it's been in the headlines recently after Sony's Phil Harrison remarked that it will be shown off again next year, and that "some elements already exceed the trailer".

Yep but the first one was VERY average when you look at gamerankings. If you are going to spend vast sums on IP make sure you pick the right one in the first place.

    eh?!

Is anyone other than Sony even slightly interested in Killzone?

So, another Gran Turismo style rip-off in the pipeline?
  • lambtron #5 6 years ago

    Haha.

The first one was pretty but vapid. The level design and game play were archaic - it was pretty much like the original MOH - corridor shooter, no jump no vehicles or interactivity. In other words everything that Halo is, it wasn't. Even fanboys of this game when they try to say what's good about it come up with something like - "The visual style is more gritty and mature than Halo." Personally that isn't the reason I play games...

They're going to have to make a massive departure from the original to live up to the hype.

"Is anyone other than Sony even slightly interested in Killzone?"

Ofcourse. After the BEST GRAPHICS EVAR! hype every 15 year old sony fanboy will be interested in it. Do you think Gears of War has become such a hype because of it's revolutionary gameplay?
  • Steroyd #7 6 years ago

    I'm summerising on this one.

-Core mechanic of game was v. good.
-Glitches were too frequent and noticeable the games downfall was more technical than anything else.
-They can make a good game and they've sorted most of the issues in KZ:L including repetitive voices.
-KZ1 sold close to 2 million.

And no there's no such thing as a (insert game here) killer.
Is Pro Evo a Fifa killer because it's a better game or is Fifa still king of the hill because it sells more.

/tries to run away from **** flinging.

black book is not upcoming, it's been released in holland already.

Sonys big pockets still can't polish a turd.

I'm not going to start a debate about how innovating GoW may or may not be but GoW is one thing for sure, incredibly fun. Something KZ lacked to the bone (yes, I've played it and yes, I got bored of it only after one level).

-Core mechanic of game was v. good. - It was? Didn't notice that.

-KZ1 sold close to 2 million. - Sales don't make a game good.

It will be interesting to see if the 'BUT IT'S NOT ORIGINAL!' people will cry out with KZ2.

uh, i got bored of gears after the first level.
    Massively overrated game IMO

I actually liked Killzone. I thought it was very difficult, had an awesome art direction and some really cleverly designed levels. It did get a bit repetitive after a while, but that happens to most simple shooters after a while.
  • Steroyd #13 6 years ago

okay but since Killzone i've also played COD, Doom 3, Halo, Battlefield, Black and a lil bit of FarCry and Half Life I've got wiser to the genre since. ;)

Funnily enough Timesplitters is the one I've had most fun with minus the sci fi levels.
  • LOLLERS #14 6 years ago

So they didn't manage to hire enough artists to finish all the content for the initial release in the end then... They were trying to get people from all over the world to go there and help, even me! I heard the art team alone needed 120 people at one point...

Alos, if you give up on GoW after one level, you lose. Almost everyone I know didn't really rate it after half an hour, but those that continued found that it's really good fun. x2 if you play coop over Live.
  • J*C #15 6 years ago

Killzone here we go again, ok truth is killzone was a huge turd. THAT trailer for PS3 killzone was not realtime footage at all, although they said it was. i think this time around they might knock out a slightly better game, average at best.
  • Muddtallica #16 6 years ago

It always makes me laugh when people say "yeah, I bought X game, and I got bored of it after one level", as if that's some kind of damning indictment of the game. No it isn't; it just suggests to me that you a) have a limited attention span and very little patience, and b) too much money if you can spend 50 pounds on a game then discard it after an hour.

I can rattle off a whole list of games that I didn't like at all the first time I played them, only to really get into them with some perseverance. MGS, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur...like I said, if you're willing to pay the stupid prices they charge for these games, isn't it worth at least trying to enjoy them? I've not played Killzone or Gears, but I really can't imagine that either game is the type to have revealed all its depths after one bloody level...
  • lambtron #17 6 years ago

People are different though - I'll struggle through pretty much anything if I think a game has something about it. But one of my friends won't play a game at all if he finds the camera unwieldy, regardless of how good said game might be - he has zero tolerance.
  • BartonFink #18 6 years ago

Is anyone other than Sony even slightly interested in Killzone?

Nope. Follow up to a turd will be a very expensive turd.

  • Tomo #21 6 years ago

I'm interested in Killzone still. Never played the first one due to the horrible reviews it received, but I like the atmosphere and look of the world you play in, so if they can get the sequel right I'm in. Well... once I have a PS3 in about 24 months time :/
  • penhalion #22 6 years ago

    @foxy2006

I doubt you've played it as the first level is the prison and is basically a tutorial. More like you are a sony fan and don't like hearing the truth about a ps2/ps3 game

But then there is not much to reveal. ;)
  • Steroyd #27 6 years ago

No before that i played Godeneye, Duke Nukem 3D, Turok and a lil' of Perfect Dark, but all that was old PSone/N64 stuff, then it all improved on PS2/Xbox my first next gen FPS was Timesplitters, then i started investing more time in FPS's like the ones i mentioned above, although with all the hype over Halo when i finally got to play it and Doom 3 alone single handedly killed whatever love for FPS's i had.

then i started growing tired of the genre, probably because it's now saturated without them being wholey distinguishable from each other, probably why i absolutely loved Metroid Prime, and is looking forward to Bioshock.... sorry BioShock.

I'm interested in BIA though because that's supposed to have squad commands which might be a new fresh take on the genre and i've shamedly been meaning to buy it... but i just havn't.
  • Foxclose #28 6 years ago

I really think Sony will make Killzone into a Halo killer for them! Xbox fans watch this space. ;)

  • Skooch #30 6 years ago

    @Lambtron and Muddtallica

I think both of you are right in the respect that the majority of people will play further than one level if they have spent money on a game, but there are also some situations when you just think that a game is so awful that you just can't face it and you put down the pad and walk away.

Which is exactly what I did after borrowing PDZ from a mate....

    @Skooch.

Lol - so true. I've not played PDZ so I can't comment on that but I know exactly what you mean. Even when I was a poor student with no money I still managed to buy some turds which I just couldn't bring myself to finish.

KILLZONE WILL LIVE UP TO THE HYPE. I'M SO SO SURE I WANT ALL THE DOUBTERS TO SAVE THE REVOLUTIONARY QUOTE OF MINE OR SAVE THIS PAGE AS A BOOK MARK SO WHEN IT HAPPENS U CAN LOOK BACK AND SAY I TOLD U SO
  • Foxclose #34 6 years ago

I reckon Killzone will be the best game on the PS3 by far, even if it takes Sony 4 or 5 years to finish it!

The newspaper is called de Volkskrant, not Volksrant. That would mean The People's Rant, which would be an excellent name for a newspaper.
  • Muddtallica #37 6 years ago

Skooch: You are of course quite correct. There have been instances where that's happened to me, and it's usually when I realise that I have a problem with the core gameplay engine/style of a game, something I will never overcome. Silent Hill 2 and Power Stone 2 spring to mind...in those cases, yeah, I did brak my own "give the game at least 5-10 hours" rule, because I knew I could never like them, so I just gave them back the next day to make sure I recouped my outlay. :p

But IMO, there's still a difference between that and saying "I played it once and it didn't immediately grab me, so I binned it"...
  • BadBoyBonner #38 6 years ago

"some elements already exceed the trailer"

    ***Exclusive***

I have it on very good authority that at least one element supasses the pre-rendered trailer for E3 - Yep it is the load times, they are way longer than it takes to boot from the fmv-dvd.
  • macksed #39 6 years ago

the only bit that will exceed the trailer is interactiveness
  • Triggerhappytel #40 6 years ago

I loved the art style and designs of the first Killzone.

Shame about the game though, eh?

Here's hoping for bigger & better level design, more fluid character movement, proper physics and a fucking jump button.
