Half-Life 2 Xbox dated News

Xbox News by Tom Bramwell

28 October, 2005

Xbox 360 may be the number of the hour, but those of you 359 behind will be pleased to hear that the Xbox port of Half-Life 2 has GONE GOLD IN BIG LETTERS and will be released worldwide, according to Valve, on November 15th. Smashing.

Smashing is of course a theme of Half-Life 2. Apart from being smashing, which it certainly was on the PC, it has one of the most deliciously tactile environments in gaming, full of things to club with your crowbar and wreck you’re your gravity gun.

The Xbox version is the full single-player game, lightly retouched so that it fits Microsoft's barely ageing console format, and it looked mighty handsome when we took a turn on it at E3 this May.

Expect some sort of review of the thing closer to its release date - although don't be too surprised if it's actually out on November 18th or something like that. You know how we love Fridays around here.

Quite interested to see how this measures up to the PC version, is it a straight conversion or is it like Far Cry Instincts in that they've changed the style and levels of the game?

Either way

How come there's no story about Lost Coast being released yet? I was playing it this morning!

I think its a straight single player port and is single player only no live implementation or multiplayer possibility of any kind. Either way my PC was too shite to do the original justice so I am waiting for it with baited breath.

It'd be really nice if Valve would port Half-Life source on the Xbox too, In some kind of deluxe edition thingy.

There is a review in this month OXM. They give it 9.8, but hey its OXM. The screenshots in the mag look terrible for some reason (pre Quake 1 textures), however look a lot better on the video clip included on the DVD.

Ive finished the pc version in highres widescreen mode with almost everything to the max ( >:) ). Twice. The xbx version doesnt have mp, coop or anything. Is there a reason why i should buy this? Does it have anything that the pc version doesnt have (apart from crappie console graphics)?

Id recon that this is for the ppl who didnt/couldnt play this at the pc, am i wrong?

Bit of a quick cash in. I will wait for a price drop or buy the super deluxe versions on xbox 360 with CS source, lost coast etc.. which valve will no doubt release.

It's a scaled down PC port. No bells or whistles or multiplayer for that matter. And as for Lost Coast. Yeah right. They could barely fit this on.

There is an interview with a guy from Valve in OXM and he specifically does mention these and says that they are gone from the Xbox version due to better use of streaming. He says that the gameplay is exactly the same as the PC version, and that while some trade offs were made to visuals, in some areas they have improved the graphics over the PC (i.e. better lighting effects) due to the fact the box is a standard platform.

I guess the loading time will be normal except the extreme caching Xbox games do these days at the logo, intro movies such as Chaos Theory, Doom 3, Far Cry, Halo 2 etc..
