Prey gets a release date News

PC Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

28 June, 2006

Take-Two has announced that highly anticipated PC and Xbox 360 title Prey will go on sale next month.

Billed as "a groundbreaking first-person shooter", Prey sees you playing as Tommy, a Native American garage mechanic who gets abducted by aliens. With only a ghostly hawk and a dead Grandad to guide you, it's your job to navigate your way through their a living spaceship, rescue your girlfriend and save the whole of humanity from extinction.

There are all sorts of intriguing elements to get to grips with, such as portals which act as doorways between different dimensions and switches which change the rules of gravity. These come into play during multiplayer deathmatches too, rather excitingly.

Prey is out in Europe on July 14th, three days after the US release. PC owners will be able to pick up a limited collector's edition, and a demo of the Xbox 360 game is set to appear on Live very soon.

If you'd like to find out more, you might like to read our recent interview with Human Head's Tim Gerritson. Or our preview. Or, ooh look, here's some screenshots. And a trailer. And another one! And some gameplay footage! And another trailer! Brilliant.

L.E.?? time to go cancel my pre-order then. BAH!

I think its had that date for awhile though has'nt it?

EDIT: Can't find anything about the L.E. on any of the normal webstores. Although Game is giving away an artbook with a pre-order. Its also more expensive than anywhere else. Thanks Game.

I think it would be harsh to dismiss it on the basis of its graphical style alone. I thought most were in agreement here that its gameplay over graphics? Of course I haven't actually played it yet so I don't know how good the gameplay is.

i enjoyed it, a bit bland considering its setting etc and the spirit puzzles are predictable but i did enjoy the demo and i'll pick up the full version if it's cheap enough.

I really enjoyed the demo. I thought that the gravity fields and the portals put a unique and significant edge on it. Not sure how well it would work over the entire game but seriously, I was quite impressed by it. Admittedly I'm no FPS junkie so I've no idea if this stuff has been done before.

The portal ideas were part of the pull and hype of the original unreal engine but they haven't surfaced until this game, There's an article in Edge years ago i think, many many years ago so my memory may be failing me. I did actually find myself a bit disorientated with some of the gravity shifts in the demo so well done guys, good job!

Awesome game! The multiplayer is... not amazing, but since they haven't really concentrated on it (according to the interview) I'm not too fussed. Definitely gonna pre-order this methinks - LE if I can get it!

The question is, with prey being a doom 3 engine based game will it suck on multi when i use my logitech 518 mouse. Quake 4 plays like shit because for some reason the doom engine and my mouse don't like each other.

Maybe now they can get back to Duke Nukem Forever.

That might be a joke. I'm not sure.

I hope this game sells well! I want Human Head to develop a next-gen version of RUNE! The multiplayer on that game was incredible! I really liked the gameplay and sound design on the single player game too.

I played the demo. Other than portals, spirit walking and gravity shifts, it is quite ordinary IMHO. That said, the abduction scene is nice and so is the soundtrack. Overall the game is very competently done.
