Worms on DS, PSP

2D, wireless, brand new.

Team 17 is Worming its way to PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS through publisher THQ, the pair announced late on Friday.

According to oft-vocal studio director Martyn Brown, both versions will feature classic 2D Worms gameplay "as vociferously requested by our fans," and have been in development for some time. Release details are expected "much later in the year".

Both versions will also benefit from wireless multiplayer options, as well as the traditional hot-seat multiplayer and single-player games that work in short bursts.

Brown also said PSP owners should expect 3D backgrounds, zooming, and full-width 16:9 proportions, while the DS will use the touch-screen for map-scrolling, weapon controls and stats, but work better with the finger than the stylus "to make it better for hot-seat situations".

"The gamecode is all new for both editions and not a port of earlier 2D games," he added.

The titles have yet to be officially named by either Team 17 or THQ, but more details are expected to follow soon. Team 17's next 3D Worms title, Worms 4: Mayhem, is due out on PS2, Xbox and PC at the end of July across Europe from publisher Codemasters.

give us wifi play on PSP with only one UMD and that will ROCK!
  • tonynibbles #2 7 years ago

Darkedge - you're not wrong there.

Might even take me back to those retro old school days when it first came out on PC...

psp? It is much better suited for the touchscreen of the ds! Anyway, it better not be 3d. Worms in 3d handles like crap compared to the old versions.

    Thanks for listening, Martyn!

2D style worms on DS and wireless multiplay would likely get 4+ sales from this consumer and his friends. Since I'm here, if you really wanted to make me force all my mates to buy it, do some kind of long-distance-emailling-moves-to-each-other mode!

Finally! 2D thank God!! 3D worms was terrible. On the DS - sweet!

Xerx3s seems to be a DS zelot who can't read properly.

"both versions will feature classic 2D Worms gameplay "as vociferously requested by our fans,"

I think i'd rather have a decent screen and joystick than the DS and the tiny benefits of touchscreen anyway

i have not got a clue which to go for.........oh the dilemma

I might opt for the PSP version on this, the screen seems to be a nice aspect for this game.

There are some screens on IGN's psp section.

Come on everyone, let's have a PSP vs DS pissing contest! Woooo!
  • Pinchy #12 7 years ago

Ever since I saw the DS touch screen I've thought it would be perfect for worms. Now give us lemmings as well and I'll be delighted.
  • spadge #13 7 years ago

Lemmings DS will not happen because it's Sony's IP.

We're doing Lemmings PSP too :-)
  • Teeth #14 7 years ago

Of course, it'd work on both formats. DS would be good for aiming and moving the screen around using the stylus to look around. PSP would be good for its screen.

Interesting, last I heard from Team 17 they disliked the DS, saying it was underpowered. This is ace news though!

I'd like to see the comments attributed to Team17 saying the DS is underpowered (or that we disliked it!). The DS is it's own thing, I don't think there's any harm with a different flavour of games coming out. I think the dual screen/touch screen combo works pretty well and has proved very popular (if a bit over gimmicky at times). The PSP is a lush but I'm really pleased that hardware vendors seem to be over this "must be 3d" thing that went on for a fair while. MB/T17

I hope we see more 2D games. Perhaps a hybrid 3D 2D games like the up and coming Super Mario for the DS where it plays to the strengths of having 3D engine but keeps the game play in 2D.

    It's been said before, but:

Touch Screen = Draw Your Own Levels
  • Tweakmonkey #19 7 years ago

This will be good for DS. Map on one screen, close up on the other.

    Spadge;
i think my original post was slightly miss leading when i said "team 17", the q&a at the end of the uni talk you guys did (which was very good btw, the whole Alien Breed brief was nice, the time out and feedback was so encouraging from what seems like such a closed door industry occasionally) one of the questions was for opinions on the DS, and not a Team 17 shunning like my original post may have read. Apologies :) (although the general concensus was that it was underpowered and laughable compared to psp)

edit;edit;edit; i think i just like clicking the button to be fair

Great to see we get both old-school worms and lemmings on the PSP!

I originally bought a GBA on the promise of getting lots of retro ports, but only a couple ever turned up. I'm glad that it looks like they might have just skipped a generation.

So, out of curiosity, who owns the IP to Alien Breed or Project X or Super Frog?
    mmm... handheld Team 17 goodness...

"Interesting, last I heard from Team 17 they disliked the DS, saying it was underpowered. This is ace news though!"

...because a game like Worms needs a lot of processing power?

If it wasn't attached to a thread about the 2D DS and PSP versions of worms, this comment might seem a bit hypocritical ;)

...because a game like Worms needs a lot of processing power?

I didnt say it did or in fact didn't, simply that I hadnt heard favourable comments about the DS. Nothing to do with the plausability of Worms on the handheld.
