Halo 3 rumours quashed News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

17 March, 2006

So much for the rumours about Halo 3 being called Forerunner - turns out it's all a hilarious April Fool's joke.

It all started with a post on the Xbox.com forums by someone calling himself DM Duo Maxwell, who claimed to have transcribed an article about the game which appears in the forthcoming issue of Game Informer magazine.

His post said that the game will feature "huge persistent worlds" built around a modified Halo 2 engine, that Master Chief would, star, and that there would be a co-op mode for up to four players.

But it's all nonsense, according to a forum post by a bloke from Bungie: "We can't smack 'em for an April Fool's gag. Not like we never did any." Ah well.

Halo is such a strong brand, there is no way the name would be dropped.

anyone remember the GPX2 rename promotion?

Maybe this is a game to come out along side Halo 3? They may just be crazy enough to be making 2 master chief games at once

I would cartainly hope it is an incorrect rumour. "Forerunner"?! They may as well call it "The Third Game" for all the excitement the title generates.

Why do you people care so much..

Does it give your life extra meaning to point out to Eurogamer staff that you know something they don't?

You obviously get up to date news elsewhere so whats the problem... Get over it.

Well some of us actually have a life outside of trawling through every gaming website on the net and use EG as our one stop shop for gaming info. I didn't know about this rumour or its subsequent quashing and now i do. Ignore the naysayers and keep up the good work EG :)

oi - get off ellies back. just cos you deadbeats have no lives and spend all your time reading forum posts (holy crap, i'm doing the same thing now) doesn't mean our ellie has to suffer from the same afflicton.

to my way of thinking a news item like "hey, some forum junkie posted something that only other forum junkies would have read, of interest only to forum junkies, that turned out to be untrue, that other forum junkies already knew was untrue before you because they're forum junkies", is probably aimed at non-forum junky types.

also, anyone who wears a hat like that is clearly a good time girl and is spending her time partying while we're all sat here on our asses, slapping our backs at how well informed we are.

just thought i'd point that out...

The irony is, if the article was spot on, Bungie'd deny it. So no-one really knows anything anyway. The article could be true.

Quotes from the Game Informer article:

"A well-connected Game Informer source has seen this game up and running, and tells us that the project is dubbed Forerunner (and no, this is not an April Fool's joke.)"

"Of course, when all is said in done, the game could be officially dubbed Halo 3: Forerunner or some variation thereof."

The typo in the 2nd quote is theirs, not mine. :)

It seems like every month when the new Game Informer comes out, Eurogamer runs vague stories based on it, sometimes giving credit and sometimes not. Maybe you guys should find money in the budget to subscribe, and get the magazine in front of you when you write these news stories.

Somehow I don't think this is going to change your mind.

I sure did (and do) play PC FPS games! Apart from the different controls, and the disadvantages of playing with a gamepad, Halo and Halo2 are pretty damn good. Yes, even compared with PC games. I even liked H2 more than HL2.

So there.

Now that would be an interesting game.
