New Lara Croft game on the way

Digital download title due this year.

Crystal Dynamics has announced that Lara Croft is set to return in a digitally downloadable adventure.

As revealed on the Eidos forums, it's titled Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. That's right, there's no mention of the words Tomb or Raider in the title - perhaps because this marks a departure for the series.

"This is a really exciting project for Crystal Dynamics, we have created something completely new and very different to what people might be expecting," said studio manager Darrell Gallagher.

"Lara Croft is such an iconic character in videogames, with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light we have created what we believe is a truly original digital experience."

A website for the game has already been set up. There's not much to see, mind, just the opportunity to sign up for the newsletter.

The game is down for a release later this year, with platforms yet to be announced.

It's not difficult, just chuck her into a cave with a bunch of switches, a couple of keys and a tiger or two and call it at that.

  • smirny #3 2 years ago

my initial thought was a 2d approach, maybe like shadow complex??
  • jonsaan #4 2 years ago

@wizion: You forgot inhumanly massive tits, and a ridiculous posh accent. Because all British people are posh.
  • wizlon #8 2 years ago

Ahh memories of Tomb Raider... I remember shouting something crazy playing that game... "shoot straight you big titted bitch"... and screaming something about a key... was that me or Tim from Spaced?!?

Guardian of Light? Maybe some Alan Wake style gameplay is on the cards.

So is this the same game the information leak on the forums came from?
It sounds interesting, but what I always liked about the TR games was the puzzle elements.. this sounds more like it's focused on combat/survival horror.

Also, +1 for a Legacy of Kain sequel.

They should have got rid of the Tomb Raider name as soon as she stopped raiding tombs. Which was, what, the second game?
  • Mkwone #12 2 years ago

    Is it set in Derby?
  • dfooster #13 2 years ago

they could start with copying assassins creed 2's tomb levels and the games controls.

on a side note: whilst playing assassins creed 2 and fighting off 6 guards with some incredible moves, it made me think how cool a LOTR game would be fighting orcs like that with the graphics and control scheme of assassins creed 2. it would be incredible. they could follow the books storyline from start to finish, and make a LOTR game that is an adventure game and not some retarded role player for once.

isn't this the first Lara Croft game to be made without the involvment of her "creator"?

I think I'm the only one that preferred Tomb Raider Underworld over Uncharted 1, despite all it's faults. It might be because I'd originally heard Uncharted was a TR clone which actually turned out to be a shoot em up. So maybe that's why I didn't like it because I prefer exploration and puzzles.

+1 for LoK sequel here as well.

Edit: Wasn't there mention of a survival horror type Tomb Raider game a while back?

Lara Croft goes Shadow Complex. With tombs. That's my prediction.

    @Quickstick4
He stopped being involved after the very first game. He was totally against the way they used her for nothing more than sex appeal and the fact they wanted TR2 to be more focused on action.

He only came back when Crystal Dynamics took over with TR: Legend, which as far as I'm concerned is the real Tomb Raider 2.

"Wasn't there mention of a survival horror type Tomb Raider game a while back?"

yeah it was called Angel of Darkness where you had to survive the horror of all the bugs!

Only joking, it wasn't that bad!

Just let her die, Crystal. Just let her die.

But remember to place her on her back in the coffin, or you might not get the lid on properly.

I being a little slow here. What does Square Enix have to do with it?
  • Bigglesworth #22 2 years ago

Whos said anything about Square Enix?
  • Fletche #23 2 years ago

Is Lara really that iconic these days? I can't say I would lose any sleep if I never saw her in a game again. If this is really going to be a new experience wouldn't it have better with a new character rather that revive one that has been slowly dying over the last few years?
  • ant72 #24 2 years ago

    @ Bigglesworth

It's on the website the article directs you to. Just curious.

    ..edit..

Square Enix bought Eidos. Of course, I forgot.

Lara is iconic only to people who are seriously out of the loop (the general public and the media). I likewise don't understand why PC Gamer clings to Alyx Vance so much.
  • RandomTerrain #26 2 years ago

I think if they want to keep her alive, they should give her more of a personailty.

I enjoyed the latest game with all the puzzles and exploring, no game does that better than Tomb Raider in my experience, but she was just angry the whole time. How about a sense of humour? She needs to evolve a bit, as do her enemies if the story telling is going to be worth much.
  • messiahtj #27 2 years ago

I want a new Gex game this gen. Gex 3 Deep Cover Gecko was great ( on Playstation, N64 version sucked hard). A new Soul reaver would be cool too. But Lara Croft? She is old news, accept it, just let her go. Only good thing in the last 3 Tomb Raider games was the boobs´physics, but thats it.
  • darc #28 2 years ago

I don't consider the character, Lara Croft, iconic or even interesting for that matter, but I do think the last few Tomb Raider games were a blast. (And the DLC w/ the evil Lara was money well spent, too.) There just isn't any better franchise in terms of climbing mechanics IMO. I'm sure about 50% that comes down to familiarity, but nevertheless...

Of course, they've decided to go in a new direction, which probably means they'll ruin everything. :) I'll just hope "departure" means "no guns", since they were never very good at that.

@ant72 - Because SquareEnix have absorbed Eidos, thus have become the publisher for all previously-Eidos titles.
