Naughty Dog details Uncharted 2 DLC

Team already working on next project.

Naughty Dog multiplayer designer Justin Richmond has said he will be "working on DLC stuff for the next while", confirming post-launch support for the outstanding PS3 game.

"There will be downloadable content, yes," he told us at Sony's London HQ.

"What you'll probably see is more of the competitive type: more maps, more modes, stuff like that. The co-op stuff is hugely time-intensive and the size of it - the physical download size - is huge, so that's probably not an option.

"I'm not going to say never," he added, "but for the foreseeable future we're not going to be doing that."

Richmond admitted that he is "fascinated" by co-op, and that there is stuff he would "love to do next game" now the code is in place.

"Naughty Dog does a really good job of defining things, and I think no one's really done a definitively amazing amazing co-op experience and I think we can do that, and it's something that at some point we'll tackle," he said. "If I have my say, then that's what we'd do."

Like Naughty Dog's creative boss Amy Hennig, Richmond isn't shy about the prospect of more Uncharted games, although confirmation of a third instalment remained out of reach.

As such, Richmond couldn't talk about discarded ideas for the Uncharted 2 story, as "there's a good chance we might use some of them in the future".

"There are whole parts of Drake that we haven't talked about at all yet. Drake is sort of a nice character in that there's a bunch of stuff about his past that we know but nobody else does," Richmond teased. "You'll see that... But there's a lot more of Drake to show, for sure."

Richmond revealed that programmers are already optimising on the engine, and have been split into groups to work on "whatever we're going to do next".

"Hahaha. I don't know what we'll do next actually," answered Richmond, when asked what that was.

Arne Meyer, community boss, added: "We definitely think of Uncharted as a franchise and we'd love to work on another one. But it's really about what is fresh and what we want to do next."

Look out for our full and exhaustive interview with the pair soon.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is due 16th October exclusively for PS3.

Looking forward to this, it would be nice for additional co-op DLC but I'd happily settle for more maps and rewards.

    'The best of the 2009'

That's a GOTY box quote right there.

as long as we pay for it, they will keep doing it. And if it means the company stays viable, with the profits to sustain other original projects, we all benefit.

I agree with Swiss, fact is the games coming out are "complete" usually, the DLC is worth what someone will pay for it and healthy cash-flow for dev's is a good thing rather than the feast or famine of yearly launches.

I for one, am getting annoyed with the way DLC seems to be coming about. Why can't they just make the game, a whole, finished article like they used to?

    Harddrive.

All they're doing is announcing future plans to support their game through DLC, there's nothing wrong with that, the dodgy paranoia from your post only applies when they're announcing day 1 DLC, like we've known some companies with certain games to do.

I highly doubt you'll feel you've bought an "incomplete" game when you play Uncharted 2 from start to finish.

@svd_grasshopper if you think they are hacking away no the code up until releaseday you are, for the most games, wrong - I don't see nothing wrong with starting on some dlc - especially not when it's for a title so well polished and with such a high production value as Uncharted 2

I think Left 4 Dead can make a big shout for an amazing co-op experience!

I'm totally buzzing over this - and cannot wait for nxt friday to come around :) I'm thinking of buying a surround sound system for the big TV in the lounge so i can enjoy this to the max!

I haven't been this excited about a game for some time!!!

It's games like this that proves the PS3 is a far superior console than the xbox. Looking forward to playing this game

Isn't Drake the name of a duck?

This game will never catch on.

  • Vroom #11 2 years ago

Whereas usually devs have nothing but months of blow jobs ahead of them after a game is released. Hard work developing games my arse...

DLC should not be announced or developed before the release of the actual game.

So many games/developers are guilty of this that it shouldn't be a surprise. In many cases, the developers are asked if they plan to support the game through DLC rather than them announcing it and it seems that DLC is wanted by many people although the complaining starts when we get charged for it.

The GTA IV DLC was used by MS to increase sales on 360.
MS already announced Modern Warfare 2 DLC as being a timed exlcusive for the 360 back at E3.
The Street Fighter 4 DLC was announced before the game launched.
EA mentioned Dead Space and Mirror's Edge DLC before launch (including platform specific exclusive content).
Batman: Arkham Asylum had some DLC announced and detailed before launch (but at least that has been free so far).

I see nothing bad about announcing DLC before game's release especialy when the game in question is already gold and ready to go.

Batman: Arkham Asylum shows how good can DLC be as much of it is free and serves as thanks to players who buy and enjoy the game.

  • freakzilla #17 2 years ago

I hope they make a new Jak and daxter and hopefully a bit of UC2 will rub off on it, like great voice acting, pacing, animation and just good overall story telling.
  • jambo74 #18 2 years ago

    @Velios

Bit over the top - that would make the game cost around £1000 in total.

Are the people who are decrying DLC around here genuinely trying to say that they' rather NOT have the chance to extend a fully functional singleplayer game, with either sp or mp DLC?
  • TASTYRYAN #21 2 years ago

Naughty dog planning on DLC already?? that seems a bit to soon!
O well companies will remain Cashcows it seems.

I for one will enjoy Uncharted 2 just the way it is.
