MGS 3DS "just testing the grounds"

Confusion over game's status.

Konami has told Eurogamer that the wonderfully named Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D "The Naked Sample" (3DS) remains "a full product" despite comments from Kojima Productions that suggest otherwise.

On the Kojima Productions Podcast spokesperson Sean Eyestone described the 3DS Metal Gear Solid game revealed at E3 2010 as a "sample".

"There are a lot of interesting comments on that subtitle," Eyestone said.

"Of course, I think we talked about the fact that it is a sample. That's one thing. So you know, not saying that we won't bring it out in the future or anything like that. We can't say one way or the other whether or not something like that will come out on the 3DS. At this point we can't say anything. But what we did show at E3 was a sample of what we can do with the 3DS."

Metal Gear Solid was on a long list of third-party developed 3DS games unveiled during Nintendo's E3 2010 press conference.

The game wasn't playable, but Konami showed off its impressive visuals with a number of impressive-looking screenshots, which you can see below.

Eyestone's comments suggest the screenshots demonstrate the potential of the Metal Gear game that will eventually be released for Nintendo's 3D-enabled wonder.

Eyestone's co-host, Christopher Johns, added: "[We're] just testing the grounds, see what we can do with that platform and see what the fans would say.

"This title, we expect a lot of comments. We want to hear the feedback. Hideo [Kojima] really wants to hear the feedback, especially. I think it might help bring it out, maybe."

"I think so," Eyestone agreed, "because it is a sample and we want to know how it's received. Really that kinda will influence how we move forward from this point. So please send comments. Based on what you've heard, based on the setting, the fact that it's based on Metal Gear Solid 3, things like that – what do you think of it? What do you want to see in that kind of game? Would you like that kind of game? What would you expect out of it? Are you going to buy a 3DS? Would you buy a 3DS for this game? All these questions."

Eyestone went on to explain the game’s puzzling subtitle. "People who played Metal Gear Solid 3 will know it's Naked Snake. But then of course there's the other aspect of being naked when you're looking at the screen, right? Looking at it with your naked eyes. No glasses. Just the big screen on the 3DS, which is pretty amazing the first time you look at it."

Konami is yet to date Metal Gear Solid 3DS.

Damn right I'll get a 3DS, and damn right I'll get this. My copy of Subsistence is scratched, so this is exactly what I want. An improvement on the PS2s visual fidelity which I think didn't do the game justice. I feel it was a bit too ambitious for the PS2.

It would be a shitty bait-and-switch to sell the 3DS on the basis of it's 3rd party support / mature games then pull the biggest title shown so far (as in most ambitious).

I would love MGS3 with Peace Walker style additions (customization, extra ops etc...).
  • ant72 #4 2 years ago

    Didn't Metal Gear Acid 2 have a 3D mode?
  • X3Entente #5 2 years ago

fuck no. mother base, extra ops, r&d, outer ops etc completely ruined the flow of peace walker, having to return to the menus after 2 minute segments of proper gameplay, sort of ruined it for me. And the boss battle against peace walker was almost a mandatory co op mission considering how nightmarishly difficult it was for me to do alone.

The less menus in an MGS, the better ... that really irritated me about 3. It'd be nice to see the game rebooted into a purer, simpler form.

The real question is probably wether Konami want Kojima working on Metal GearSolid 3DS or 5.

Considering the reaction the sample got, they'd have to really hate money to not release the full shebang on the 3DS.
  • Nithron #9 2 years ago

Wow, those visuals are.... Nearly PS2 quality. The future's a wonderful place aint it?
  • bdc #10 2 years ago

Nearly PS2 quality? Dude they exceed the quality of the actual Snake Eater game on the console. That's the whole point.
  • TonyHarrison #11 2 years ago

Kojima in hating free money shocker...
  • Nithron #12 2 years ago

Really? They look pretty rough to me. In one of the screens, the foliage is just disappearing into a cloud of jaggies - I played Snake Eater recently, and can't remember it looking that bad. Of course, it's 3D, though, and in person, i'm sure that makes all the difference.
  • Vitor #13 2 years ago

    @Nithron

show me a first generation PS2 game that looked as good as this. Snake Eater was a late generation PS2 game, benefiting from all the experience the devs had with the console. Imagine what 3DS games will look like late in that console's life cycle once people know how to code well for it.

He's suggesting that it's called Naked Sample because you're viewing it with your naked eyes?
When ever there's a statement from Kojima Productions it's always something esoteric and nonsensical.
  • FenderMaster #15 2 years ago

I'm pretty suspicious of those screens, MGS titles have always used higher poly models for in game cinemas (with interactive camera controls) i doubt the playable gameplay wil look as good. Peace Walker, MGS4, MGS3 AND MGS2 all did the same thing, not to say the playable stuff won't still look good.
  • Mkwone #16 2 years ago

    Well which is it

MGS on the 3Ds does look better than the PS2 game as bdc says

    or

sub Snake eater on the ps2 but only because it's early in the 3DS' life cycle as per Vitor comment?

"But then of course there's the other aspect of being naked when you're looking at the screen, right? Looking at it with your naked eyes. No glasses. Just the big screen on the 3DS, which is pretty amazing the first time you look at it."

Oh great. You've just made Sony cry again. He'll tell his Mum on you. Then you'll be in trouble.
  • Eurolamer #18 2 years ago

Comfortably the best 3DS demo at E3, IMO.
  • TaoJay #19 2 years ago

obviously the Konami people have had their brains removed as this is a no-brainer!
  • UKLL #20 2 years ago

Given the reaction it got at E3 Konami would be mad to not release it.

I have a feeling it won't be the full game though, instead it will just be the best bits and some new stuff. Anyone hoping for a full 3DS version of MGS3 (and that includes me) is probably going to be disappointed.
  • TonyHarrison #21 2 years ago

Don't forget that the 3DS has to render things twice over to give the 3D effect. The PS2 did not have to do anything like that, and yet it appears to be of similar quality. That would suggest that the 3DS is capable of more if you didn't use the 3D effect.

It leaves me wondering what the 3DS would be capable of if someone developed a 2D-only game that really pushed its capabilities, perhaps somewhere in between PS2 and GC (maybe even Xbox) like games?

Anyway, even if the 3DS is 'only' capable of PS2 quality graphics, that would still see it become the most powerful handheld console in existence, so I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

    @KingAntoine
As opposed to Sony showing FMV from Final Fantasy and claiming that they are in-game graphics? :)
  • hazzatori #23 2 years ago

Of course its a no brainier based on the E3 reaction, just like it was for Sqeenix to remake FFVII on PS3 or at least PSP!! oh wait....... those crazy Japanese devs
  • alcides #24 2 years ago

you can't see 3D with an eyepatch.

    irony.

    I just did it.
  • waynenot #25 2 years ago

I was set to buy the machine soley on the basis that Snake eater was coming out for it, so what the fuck is all this nonsense?

Not buying the machine if Snake Eater isn't on it - get to it, chaps.
  • RandomRash #26 2 years ago

snake eater is not only the best of the series, its one of the best games ever made, stealth, action, boss battles and a fantastic story, definitely deserves another release so more people can play it
  • DevaFalc #27 2 years ago

This game would definitlely be a reason to buy a 3DS!
