Masthead working on Interplay's MMO News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

3 April, 2009

Interplay has announced that it's bringing Bulgarian outfit Masthead Studios in on its "Project V13" MMO - the game that is so obviously Fallout Online.

Project V13's been in development at Interplay since November 2007, and original Fallout designer Chris Taylor is working on it (although fellow vet Jason Anderson has moved on).

Interplay will retain control of development, but will use Masthead's technology, tools and resources. Masthead is currently developing its own MMO, Earthrise.

Earthrise is, coincidentally, a science-fiction RPG set in a post-apocalyptic future wasteland. We saw it at GDC, so look out for our impressions soon.

Interplay sold the single-player rights to Fallout to Bethesda, resulting in the phenomenally successful Fallout 3 - but retained the rights to make online games in the series itself.

And just in case you think we're being a bit presumptuous, note that Interplay has been talking about a Fallout MMO for years.

Surely there must be a good chance that the 2 projects are going to be merged. Can't be much point in one developer working on 2 post apocalyptic future wasteland MMO's at the same time, especially when Earthrise is so obviously inspired by Fallout anyway.

And will it have gory slow motion that's making up 99% of the game?

Hopefully with these guys doing an online version it'll persuade Bethesda to keep their eye on single-player only games.

And, if any of you asked for multiplayer for Fallout 3, then know that you are, probably, a moron.

Is there really room for two post-apocalyptic massively-multi-player-online-role-playing games in this industry? And if so, should one studio really be working on two? This seems very strange to me.
