L4D2 free for XBL Silvers next week

Not all that glitters is Gold.

Silver members of Xbox Live will be able to experience Left 4 Dead 2 multiplayer next weekend for free.

The promotion starts at hometime (5pm GMT) on Friday, 15th January, and ends at 5pm on Sunday, 18th January.

Co-operative multiplayer is to Left 4 Dead 2 what olive oil and salt are to Jamie Oliver - you can get by without but it won't taste as nice. And nice it most certainly is, as we told you in our L4D2 review.

After 2m sales at retail alone - Steam sales are kept close to Valve's chest - more Left 4 Dead 2 is a no-brainer. And so Valve will expand the game in spring with add-on The Passing.

Or you can expand the game yourself, as Valve released the Left 4 Dead 2 toolset earlier this week.

Zep references and L4D2 news always make me happy. Anyone who hasn't tried Left 4 Dead should give it a go, it's marvellous.

Would a silver member buy L4D2?
  • Lionheart #3 2 years ago

That's like asking someone to buy Lost Odyssey and an extra controller.

It's probably to encourage those who subscribe using a card/code, to re-subscribe once it drops back to silver.

    Like me.

MS should do a pay as you go Gold Membership. They'd make a FORTUNE on that. Great for people who only use online stuff as and when. Imagine you're a single player game kind of guy but every now and again the odd demo comes up you want to play or you fancy a quick blast at Halo online rather than single player.

Lionheart: Where does that analogy make sense?

This is a good move to show silver members what they're missing out on and letting them play a new game online for a weekend.

No, they would LOSE a fortune. And that's why they don't do it.

Really? Imagine it was 50p or £1 a day. Doesn't gold equate to £3.50 a month or something, a couple of log ins to download a demo or to play an online game and it'd pay for itself. You'd probably get some people who would fork out more in a year than a sub would have cost in the first place and then you'd get the eternally silver people who might jump in every now and again too.

But subscirption services, like Gyms, make their money from subscriptions because people pay for a year and barely use it.

You start making it pay-per-use and you might end up with a lot of people stopping their subscriptions and just paying for each use instead, cutting the revenue MS makes.

  • Shinetop #12 2 years ago

Hello Valve, forget about The Passing and get on with Episode 3. Thanks!

You can play the campaigns single player you know..... And split screen. I've played split screen loads of times.

Nice. Some cannon fodder for versus mode :)

Dont buy many games as I dont have the disposable income for them anymore. L4D2 was always a 'will I, wont I' game. Great to see this from Valve as I can get a good feel for the game which may get me to buy.
  • jambo74 #16 2 years ago

Assume you need a bought copy to take advantage, yes?
  • shotgun44 #17 2 years ago

It's the reason I don't own a copy of L4D2 at the mo. I don't have gold. So assuming this is aimed at someone like me, it's gonna be completely useless as I don't buy games that I can't immediately play!
  • ronuds #18 2 years ago

Yeah...this is odd seeing as nobody with a Silver membership would buy this in the first place.

This gens premier reason for playing on console? xbox live? you're joking right?
i've had Xbox360 for a year now, and i'm still trying to find any reason how anyone can justify paying extra to have full acces to a game you bought from shop, there's none what so ever.

You can babble about the features all day long, yet there's nothing on xbox live i can't use on pc for free when playing, on top of that, i bought PS3 right after christmas and it just hammers in the point deeper, why am i paying for something i shouldn't need to pay in the first place? when everyone else offers slightly less limited, same or better features than our precious xbox live?

Even if you play on consoles, you should never need to pay extra to have full acces to your game. ( exception being mmorpgs )
I'd be hapy to continue paying for gold membership if the payment was similiar to that of mmorpg payments, meaning when i pay i get extra content to my game for free, not just for the right to play multiplayer which should be free regardles after i've bought the damn game.

This game is the only reason why I bought gold membership again. Give it a go.
  • kenji_asai #22 2 years ago

That's a great marketing for Valve as for Microsoft. I would buy a Gold Membership... if my console wasn't banned ;D
