Fallout PS3 Trophy patch released

Also sorts out stuttering, apparently.

As promised, Bethesda Softworks has released a patch to add Trophy support to Fallout 3, and to sort out stuttering during system notifications, while "other issues reported within the community" are also tackled.

The 24MB patch, which takes the game to version 1.10, should automatically download for US and UK gamers, and Bethesda said yesterday that "Updates for other PS3 territories, as well as Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, are on their way".

The Trophy list is the most obviously appreciable change, although as ever with these it's not retroactive. There are 51 Trophies to hunt down for those who've waited, in a list that mirrors the Xbox 360 Achievements except for the addition of a Platinum Trophy for gamers who gather all the other ones.

As for the stuttering, it's one of a number of issues endured by PS3 owners, as we detailed in our Fallout 3 Triple Format Face-Off last month, although for the best experience we concluded you might prefer to play it on the PC anyway.

Excellent, fingers crossed I get it for Christmas :)
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #2 3 years ago

I put this on the xmas list in the hope that the trophys would be out before then, so Hurray for me!
  • Eraysor #3 3 years ago

I only hope the 360 patch comes soon. My game is getting excessively jerky even with cache clearing.
  • Dave52 #4 3 years ago

Excellent - a PS3 patch out in time for Christmas Day...!
  • Tomnd #5 3 years ago

Just bought it on the 360, only got to the first town and it seems fine so far. What are the main problems with the 360 version?
  • Duckula #6 3 years ago

Are the trophies retroactive or do I have to start a new game?
  • kangarootoo #7 3 years ago

You have to start a new game :(
  • kangarootoo #8 3 years ago

P.s. That isn't Bethesda's fault. That is just the way the PS3 works. They can't secure retroactive trophies because of the way you can copy save game files around the place.

  • Robertfltn #10 3 years ago

Is the liberty prime problem fixed yet?
  • Widge #11 3 years ago

Yeah, the only way trophies can be retroactive is if there is some sort of external monitoring of progress (like on Warhawk).
  • Steroyd #12 3 years ago

Yay the game freezing for a second everytime a message popped up pissed me off to no end.

Thank god I didn't get this at launch.
  • breedob #13 3 years ago

my game keeps crashing during the Jefferson memorial story mission when u walk through a door when the enclave arrive. This still happens after the update. Anyone know if this can be fixed?
  • breedob #14 3 years ago

    Don't have a 360 or I would have! Lol!
  • rhubarbandcustard #15 3 years ago

Almost every game I play at the moment is proving to be so damn difficult. It never used to feel that way.

Anyway, Fallout 3 on the PS3. Slightly shitty graphics, OTT death scenes aplenty and a sandbox game world that makes my eyelids seem very heavy within a few short minutes of playtime. Which might explain why anything and everything in the game kills me so damn quickly.

I mean, sweet mother of god, if I shoot someone in the head with a sawn-off shotgun at point blank range I expect them to die in a shower of bone and blood, not have just 10% of their health points knocked off.

    bethesda are shit.

    There, I've said it.

    Flame me. Flame on.
  • Pastici #16 3 years ago

But you've got to remember you're effectively shooting people with dice not guns.
  • superfurryanimal #17 3 years ago

wished I had waited before starting again.

    /starts again.
  • Widge #18 3 years ago

No I find them shitty too. Some devs dump out a game and then have to patch it, which fair enough irks us. Beths on the other hand, dump something out, feebly patch the odd bit and then slap out a statement along the lines of "right thats it, we've stopped supporting the game now" while leaving rather large and obvious game breaking bugs in place.

Every time I think about picking up Fallout 3, its THAT which sticks in my mind and points me in the direction of a different product instead.
  • mikeck #19 3 years ago

    Maybe it's you that's shit rhubarb ;)
  • kangarootoo #20 3 years ago

    @rhubarbandcustard

I won't flame you, but lets discuss.

It seems like some of your gripes relate to the typical western RPG model. People playing a Fallout sequel expect certain things, and Bethesda are to some degree obliged to provide those things.

One of the the things is a levelling up system, which in turn means the player is a bit feeble at the start of the game. I agree that it seems a little ridiculous when every new RPG has you fighting rabbits and rats at the start because you are too weak to fight "proper monsters", but that is kind of par for the course.

Equally some people really like the open wandering that a sandbox type RPG gives them. I love the fact that I can ignore the main quest for ages whilst I totter off doing all sorts of unrelated stuff. I completed every guild quest in Oblivion before getting more than 2 steps down the main storyline path (and was glad I did, as the guild quests were for the most part much better than the main story quests).

As I see it, Bethesda are one of the best out there at doing what they do. And what they do are western style RPGs. If you don't like the genre, you aren't really going to like their work. But does that really make them shit?

    @Widge

"Beths on the other hand, dump something out, feebly patch the odd bit and then slap out a statement along the lines of "right thats it, we've stopped supporting the game now""

When, over the last 15 years that Bethesda have been doing their thing, have they acted as you just described?
  • Widge #22 3 years ago

Well a short while into Oblivion, they did a statement that effectively was "this is our last patch for the game"... this left a load of bugs still present in the game too which PC users have been going around fixing using the construction set. Irritating when you get something like the game breaking vampirism bug left in there. I actually emailed them to say "when are you going to sort this?" but got the reply "you can still finish the main quest as a vampire". You can avoid it by going around fully stocked on Cure Diesease IF you're clued up. My dad, however, ended up having to start his game again because without sitting on forums like this or the Beths forum, you'll never know about the bug.
  • spudsbuckley #23 3 years ago

For all the people asking why multi-platform owners don't buy the game on the 360, the reason is simple.

The 360 hardware sucks. Of the 4 360 swe've had in the place i'm staying, all belonging to different people, 3 of them have RRoDed and one of those was one the supposedly 'improved' Elite models.

Mine is the only one that hasn't died yet and thats because i only use it for 360 exclusives. The PS3 and PC are my platforms of choice for multi-format titles because they're reliable.
  • Widge #24 3 years ago

I really like Morrowind/Oblivion btw ... but that bug is a crime. Kinda puts me off exploring anywhere with vampires just in case I slip up and forget to cure the disease.
  • Beano #25 3 years ago

Bought the 360 version which also is very buggy...but I quess it has less bugs than the PS3 version. To bad the game is incredible dull :(

    EDIT: I loved Oblivion...

    @Widge

Well fair enough on that particular bug, but overall it does sound kind of minor. Post release support for games is always a tough one. It costs money, and any company can only allocate so much in the way of funds for that sort of thing.

I think that generally speaking Bethesda are pretty good for that sort of thing, but perhaps sometimes they could do better.
  • ParanoidZombie #27 3 years ago

@widge: what? How is this a glitch? I thought that was done on purpose: if you get too close to vampires, you might get the disease. If you check your stats regularly, you can easily see the symptoms and cure yourself before you become a vampire.
... And you still can do everything if you're a vampire, I did most of the game as one, didn't get kicked out of one single sidequest (including DLC) because of my condition. And I'm sure you know there is a cure, anyway.
  • Widge #28 3 years ago

The cure quest is broken in the GOTY edition... which is what I've got.

But you see where i'm coming from, its an annoying gripe in something I really like. Also now I'm a bit miffed that I'll never have a chance to do the vampirism quest through to conclusion. Gives me the impression that if stuff like this happens in Oblivion and doesn't get fixed, what will I find out about in Fallout?

game world that makes my eyelids seem very heavy within a few short minutes of playtime

Fallout is neck and neck game of the year for me with another title but I have do admit that I fell asleep a few times during play whilst moving over the wastelands.

I woke up once in facing some rocks in a very remote place on the map. I'd managed to walk most of the way without anything happening to me while I was asleep.

The only other game that's made me go to sleep before was Lego Star Wars.
  • Darren #30 3 years ago

I'm surprised to hear that the Xbox 360 version is being patched as it was 100% stable (no crashes or freezes) and I saw no bugs or glitches at all in the 40 odd hours I played it right to the end. It was certainly a lot more stable than Oblivion was at release... that game froze during the loading screen for me about a dozen times until it was patched... but that was on my original launch machine, now long gone, and we all know how flaky they were!!! ;)
  • Doctor_What #31 3 years ago

I bought the PS3 version not not due the hardware reliability of the 360 but because of the noise of the system drive. Yep, I could install to the HDD (which improves the problem, but it's still significantly louder than the PS3) but I bought a release 360 with the 20GB drive, so that would require me buying a new HDD so I could have both this and Fable II installed.

So far, after about eight hours of play, it seems fine. The framerate has *very* occasionally been a little iffy, but not enough to intrude on my play. Texture pop-in seems to happen on every current gen game with high ideals on the 360 and PS3 and again it hasn't impeded the gameplay.

PS3 or 360: on the few titles I've played side by side, I'd say the difference is usually so minimal that I can't tell it's there. I need both systems for work, so for me it's a question of which system I find kinaesthetically nicer, and the PS3 is quieter so it wins on multi-format choices, other people prefer the 360 controller and don't mind the noise so much. It's all personal, and arguments about a dropped frame here and there are a tad pointless.
  • GamesConnoisseur #32 3 years ago

Not always just a small difference, I have both and on some games PS3 come off worse due to 42" 1080p showing more obvious jaggies, but again down to individual preferences and what they consider more important trade offs, ie noises vs visual fidelity.

For the late buyers of PS3 Fallout 3, trophies are great additions, but for those who finished the game, it would be damn annoying to redo the game, as there may be certain trophies that may not be unlocked again when it would have the first time around. So in this case perhaps better not to bother?

Still come new year all the trophies will be mandatory and about time! I m on level 5 at moment and been playing PS3 GTA4 again and its still a good game.
  • Vice.Destroyer #33 3 years ago

Anybody have any idea whether this patch is only for the english version of Fallout 3? Or is there a patch available for the german version of Fallout 3?
  • Machiavellian #34 3 years ago

Interesting that I hear people say their 360 is louder than the PS3 when not using the DVD drive because my system is the opposite. The PS3 fan is definitely louder than the 360 if the the 360 is playing from the HDD. I can barely here the 360 if there is no sound in the room and if there is any sound coming from my TV, I do not here the 360 at all (the same for the PS3).

Anyway, one thing that will be missing from the PS3 version is DLC which is a bummer if you enjoyed Fallout 3 and want the story to continue.
  • KujiGhost #35 3 years ago

Sorry to jump slightly off-topic, but Fallout 3 has made me want to get Oblivion on the 360. Is it true that some quests are "broken"? Is it game-breaking?
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #36 3 years ago

i have a launch 360 too all beit a repaired one, and it is a noisy fucker even with games installed to HDD, but i reckon the latest 360s do run alot quieter possibly quieter than the PS3 if you install the game. But im not gonna buy another xbox just to find out. Ill just mostly play multiformat on PS3, since the 360 broke once and is now out of warranty im somewhat aprehensive to play anything on it other than exclusives cos i dont want it to break again and have to pay for a repair

Yeah, in Oblivion I got this bug which affected the Thieves' Guild missions right before the last mission. This pissed me off really bad. If I'd had the PC version, I would have been able to work around it probably, as it was the PS3 version, no such luck.

Oblivion was (is) a great game, shame Bethesda is really lousy supporting their games. Probably will get Fallout 3 for PC when/if it starts working in Wine.

    Yeaaaaaaay!

    /Restarts game

PS: Anyone else get frustrated by the experience in the game? Morrowind and Oblivion I get experience for everything I do, here even though I seem to get experience, 3-10 here and there, I always level up round finishing a quest (which give me 300-1000).

And the game seems lots shorter. Good I suppose because other wise I wouldn't be restarting!
  • makeamazing #39 3 years ago

Great news, I was worried when i got this Xmas day that it wouldnt be patched and there would be no trophies... so glad to hear they managed to get ti done in time :D Not long to wait for Xmas day and to finally get a chance to play it.

Oh lesson learnt with prices... dont buy any games on release day, they are all cheap right now, could have saved a fortune :D
