EA confirms Dead Space

First survival-horror game.

EA has stomped its giant money-filled boots into the world of survival-horror today by confirming to us it's working on a new game called Dead Space.

Details are hidden like zombies in cupboards at the moment, with a big reveal feature due to air in the latest issue of magazine Game Informer, which describes it as sure hit for fans of films like Event Horizon.

Apparently a "renegade team" at EA is making the title, which will be "the most chilling sci-fi horror game the world has ever seen".

We'll let you know more when we do. Unless something spooky happens in space and we get turned into a giant ant-man with bit tentacle things capable of squashing a human like a walnut in a nutcracker.

    But for which format?
  • ZuluHero #2 4 years ago

knowing EA all of them ;)
  • sanctusmortis #3 4 years ago

I'd have thought that a given. EA NOT support a format? That's unpossible!
  • Blerk #4 4 years ago

Good-oh. The world needs more survival horror. Just don't muck it up, alright?

    /dreamcast flashback.

Great potential though if handled well. Hang on...its EA.

EA Survival Horror...Its in the Cupboard.
  • Weezer #12 4 years ago

If it's as scary as Event Horizon, you may as well set it in Postman Pat land. The only scary thing about EH is that some 'tard in Hollywood actually signed off on the budget.

I'll never get those two hours back.

Event Horizon is a top class horror film, and I'm really picky on my horror films. It's just that everything that Paul Anderson has done since then has been utter shit, so everyone just automatically lumps it in with rest of his shit films, just because it has his name on it.

If he just stuck to somewhat more original ideas, staying away from the game-to-movie conversions, and focused on creeps as well as jumpscares, his films would be pretty decent horrors. Event Horizon was that film.

If EA could apply their 'Skate' mentality to this, and not their 'FIFA' approach to game developing it should be ace if it has that Event Horizon feel to it.
  • gmmonkey #14 4 years ago

I love films like event horizon, sunshine, abyss, etc.. even that film "mission to mars" with don cheadle and tim robbins. So, if this is even the slightest bit good, i'll jizz all over it.
  • FlamingCarrot #15 4 years ago

Event Horizon had potential in the first hour. Excellent idea just not executed well.
Alien still is the benchmark for me..
  • spongebob #16 4 years ago

    Sounds exciting so far :)

Dead Space is a cool name, but by the release date it's going to get a second name tacked to it, like Dead Space: Space Is Dead.

Anyone else think of Dino Crisis 3?
  • DUFFMAN5 #19 4 years ago

Dino-crisis was and is a brilliant game
  • SomaticSense #20 4 years ago

Dino Crisis was indeed a brilliant game. As was Dino Crisis 2.

Dino Crisis 3 on the other hand, was abysmal.

    Dead Rising
    Dead Phoenix (cancelled)
    Dead Rush (cancelled)
    Dead Island
    And now, Dead Space

Gee - couldn't they think up a title a little more original.

    EDIT - can't spell 'Phoenix'.

Event Horizon was a great film (if you are into immersive horror). Watch in the right conditions and it was top class.

Sure it was flawed in some ways but most are.

It's not "Alien" of course but "Alien" has lost some of it's magic for me now as I've watched it at least 500 times! ;)

    Still brilliant though.
  • Drpwnage #23 4 years ago

    This looks Dead interesting.
  • Concrete #24 4 years ago

My guess is that this is the System Shock 3 project that EA were quietly working on. Having seen the success of Bioshock I imagine they don't want to look like they are jumping on the the bandwagon but still want some sales.
  • dr_shambles #25 4 years ago

    Event Horizon rocked.

"Oh. My. God. What happened to your eyes?"

"Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see."
  • Daymare #26 4 years ago

/also signs in the Event Horizon Fan Club

    Only three, ha?;)

Although it's just, let's say, 7/10 (if I'm being analytical), it's still a guilty pleasure for me. Hate the black comedy type guy though, flying in space and saying "fuck" alot, grr - it feels out of place! Other then that, great gothic sci-fi horror, best Anderson's film indeed and by the looks of it, it'll remain his best forever. On the side note; anyone seen the trailer for AvP2? It looks, dare I say it, interesing (of course, Anderson's not back in the director's chair)! Bloody and gory, ergo possible fun! I presume they're gonna put PG-13 version in the theaters but the "unrated edition" DVD might be justified, compared to "unrated scam" DVD edition of the first.

"Apparently a "renegade team" at EA is making the title"

Oh man, I have a huge giant slap waiting for the person that thought that would be a cool thing to say.

EA is the largest games corporation on the planet. There is nothing 'renegade' about any part of it. It just smacks of geeks at a party talking about how "totally mental" they are because one of them just drank a triple rum and coke.
  • Drakron #28 4 years ago

Like all incredible bad movies there are a fraction of people that consider it a cult movie.

And that just proves that "Event Horizon" is a incredible bad movie.
  • kangarootoo #29 4 years ago

    @Daymare

I reckon the new AvP film will get an 18 cert. Seems like the direction they are taking the film wouldn't really work if they cut it down. More sci-fi horror than sci-fi thriller methinks.
  • Daymare #30 4 years ago

"I reckon the new AvP film will get an 18 cert."

    I certainly hope so.

"Like all incredible bad movies there are a fraction of people that consider it a cult movie. And that just proves that "Event Horizon" is a incredible bad movie."

How do you know only a fraction of people love it? And even if it IS so, what does that prove? Only a fraction of people like Mullholand Drive, for instance, and that is masterpiece, no, Masterpiece. Tastes of majority prove nothing.
I do kindda like the "incredible bad movie" moniker for Event Horizon, though, but it's probably only a typo, right? If it's nOt a typo, I apologize for my defensive stance;)

Christ, I must have seen a different Event Horizon. Your entertainment thresholds must be really low!
  • Daymare #33 4 years ago

Weezer, I can't say for others, but I'm a big horror fan and we tend to be passionate about some movies which "normal people" usualy don't like. I understand you don't understand;)
  • ekko #34 4 years ago

Sounds like System Shock - something that EA has the rights to.
  • Wyrm #35 4 years ago

Event Horizon was ace. Spaceships drifting into hell = teh win, and the video of the ships old crew was horrifying.
  • Royal Fool #36 4 years ago

    Concrete:
"My guess is that this is the System Shock 3 project that EA were quietly working on."

Pretty much, yeah. I'n guessing it's been reworked into this new IP or the people who got early looks at it were just wrong about it being System Shock 3 in the first place.
  • asphaltcowboy #37 4 years ago

Apparently a "renegade team" at EA is making the title, which will be "the most chilling sci-fi horror game the world has ever seen".

Of course, being an EA title, it probably won't have blood so they can sell it to your babies!
  • Calgon #38 4 years ago

Registers trade mark for the name rights of:

"Dead Good!" I might make a thread so you can post plotline ideas, Im thinking an undead clan of Monks running havock in a small town set in ancient China/Japan and you the Kitana(who cares how you spell it Im tired okay!) weilding badass have to stop them taking over the world... there might be a twist at the end but I havent decided.

Event Horizon was a great film, I loved it. I how this game will turn out for EA though.
  • George-Roper #42 4 years ago

    @xagarath

    "But for which format?"

    All the next-gen consoles, i'd imagine. So that's 360 and PS3.
  • ExplodingClown #43 4 years ago

Uh-oh, marketing didn't think this one through. I can already see the negative review titles... it's a short jump from "Dead Space" to "Dead Boring", "Waste of Space" etc.

Event Horizon started well then descended into slo-mo throwing-people-around stupidity, overused the 'hey look, no eyes' gag, and finally sputtered out in Hellraiser-ripoff schlock*. It was an interesting premise they didn't make good on, despite hiring Andrew Kevin Walker (who wrote 'Seven') to tweak the script. Guess you can't polish a turd. Unfortunately the use of that movie as a point of comparison speaks volumes for who EA will be target-marketing this at.

*Paul Anderson is a hack, and should have had his hands broken for fucking up 'Soldier' - a script by David Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven), for God's sake! The fact his picture is on the front of the book floating around at the start of Event Horizon is testament enough to a bloated ego and complete lack of directorial merit.

Ronaldinho to feature on the front cover :p

You're all overlooking that Event Horizon is just a rip-off of Sphere except cack and set in space.
