DiRT demo on UK PSN News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

31 August, 2007

Codemasters has traipsed mud all over the PlayStation Store this afternoon, where it's left a Colin McRae: DiRT demo for you all to try out.

It lets you hop behind a naughty motor and give three game modes a good seeing too. There's Crossover, where you can race McRae himself around a German course in a flashy Subaru, or you can head off-road in a little buggy to speed around a river in Michigan in C.O.R.R. mode

"Tyre" of that and you can nip over to Italy to burn around the start of the Cuconi B rally stage - there's vineyards and olives and everything.

The full PS3 version is out on 14th September, and you can pop over to our 360 review for a better idea of what to expect.

Alternatively, if you live where you play Basketball and Baseball and wrong Football, then you'll have much more to choose from this "Labour Day" weekend.

There's Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and the Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection add-on for ten "bucks" a piece, or you can snaffle up the original Tekken 5: DR game and expansion for a total of 30 "greens".

But if you're saving your dollars for something else, then you can test out new demos for Tiger Woods 2008, All-Pro Football 2K8, or NASCAR '08. There's lots of new trailers to watch, too.

Unfortunately Sony has no word on when we'll see these bits and pieces on the European PlayStation Store, but says it's working hard on swamping us with content.

Did read in a the official PS3 mag (so it must be true ) that the PS3 version had a lot of enchancement over the 360 version.

Edit to clear my name

When I say it must be true I am joking! before the flaming starts

tis a real shame sony europe can't get their act together, the US store is shaping up quite nicely these days. It gets much more stuff than us each and every week.

I don't care about the demo's and trailers as it is easy enough to get those from the US store, but for premium content things arn't so bright.

Sony i want to give you my money for quite a few things which are on the US store but not ours, please let me do so!! You will be richer for it!!

?! I though that the demo was released ages ago. I'm sure I can remember playing this months ago. Or is my brain starting to rot?

headbog: "Buggy racing is not as good as Motorstorm though."

Darn tootin', it feels utterly soulless compared to Motorstorm. I can't see myself getting bored of Motorstorm anytime soon* so I'm covered for racers and happy to wait for Sega Rally Revo (please be good, please... ) and Burnout Paradise.

Most of that had nothing to do with what you said.

* Good job! It's the only game PS3 has that's worth playing!

"Not really any different to thee 360 version - despite being co-developed by Sony and having a couple of months longer brewing."

Yes it's the same game, but runs a lot smoother and with less tearing.

Motorstorm will sit proudly in my collection until the next incarnation of WipEout arrives. Driving games require a decent level of voiolence to maintain my interest.

the DIRT demo has some screen tearing and some fps slow down but it not much, howver the gameplay feels slightly soulless without rumble and the graphics are a bit to flat and clean, also all the promises of deformed tracks effecting the handling of vehicles seems bollox as well

/awaits a rumbling sixaxis and a rally game worthy of the sport

NCAA football ... damn its ugly! ugly as sin, and the sound! what sound, ok no comentary for the demo but it just focused me on the turd that was left, I think they have one four second crowd sound they change the volume of while the gameplay is still firmly buried in the last gen, unfortunately this is all we get when EA Sports has no competition and just shows us what'll happen to fifa if they ever manage to silence konomi :/

maybe all pro will be better

Played this from the US store,

Having played both 360 and PS3 the PS3 version did seem to have a far better frame rate to the 360

I don't miss rumble in the slightest, I like that the pad is lighter, and Warhawk shows that the sixaxis isn't just a gimmick when used properly.

For people complaining about the EU PSN Store compared to the US PSN Store, you should be grateful the disparity isn't as great as between the US and EU Live Marketplace. But then, of course, the disparity between the US Live Marketplace and US PSN Store is pretty drastic as well. The consistency in which demos are made available on Live Marketplace has been pretty remarkable.

What if the US PSN Store had as much content as the US Live Marketplace and the EU PSN store still had the same amount of content? I couldn't fathom.

"Beano: I think your overstating the smoothness comparison.

Tearing?"

Not at all ... the 360 version (retail) was terrible when there was more than 3-4 other cars were on screen (like the first track in the demo with buggys). The PS3 demo is still not perfect but far better judging from the demo.

I just downloaded this game,

What a stinking pile of dog shit!

Codemasters, what have become of you? Low frame-rate, strange arcady handling, lousy voice acting from a puberty-toned american teen?? WTH? Hmm, will this game bomb in the Playstation charts or be bought by desperate PS-racers having nothing better on their ps3s?

I will play my WRC Evolution PS2 disc instead of this crap.

About my low frame-rate comment above, I guess it could be worse.. but it is definitely not full 60 fps, more like 40.. And it shows and you can feel it. I cant stand that in a racing game. Have I been spoiled by PS2 racers? Is this the future?

Ah, I forgot. GT5 will be 1080p 60fps :) Thank GOD!

Played the demo while playing my retail 360 version. AA better on 360 of course, but the PS3 seems frame unlocked and far better for it.

Controls have definitely been tweaked to be far better. 360 version plays like a shopping trolley with the joypad and the steering wheel implementation is the worst on the 360.

PS3 version better than 360 for me.

@dog2_99

Just tried playing Tekken Online, and i'm afraid that there are a lot of problems at this stage.
Cannot find games to enter. I tried connecting with my original Greek account and it wouldn't connect me anywhere. When i used my US account i did get some results but i managed to play only once out of 15+ tries.
I just hope that when it is released in Europe i will be able to find more available games with less lag.

Actually i have to apologise for using a US account, but the PS store is still not available in Greece. The UK shop will not let me buy anything.
Only the US store accepts my Credit Card. Believe me, that's very very frustating.

Edit: I managed to play for a couple of hours, it's great but you certainly need a very good connection to play right now. I even managed to beat a guy that is number #45, and the jerk kicked me out of the room!

Beano: have you tried it ?

I've played both - 360 version for about 26 hours and PS3 for about 4 - and the major differences for me were the missing rumble and, most important the months in between releases, I was fed up with DiRT when I played the later. Technically (graphicwise and soundwise) didn't notice any difference, and certainty not an improvement on the PS3 version that justifies the "rumbeless" and the delay.

It'll be because PS3 is a pig to develop for, hence the 3 month wait...

And Dirt is locked to 30fps isn't it?

Tried the demo and was very unimpressed. It looks kind of crap (it lacks any personality and doesn't even come close to the lowly GT HD demo), physics are utterly unconvincing and the buggy races are nowhere near as fun as MotorStorm or any Burnout for that matter. Here's hoping Sega Rally will do a better job.

The driving model of this game just lacks depth. CMR4 was already bad enough, this is even worse. I only managed to have some fun in the buggies, because it was multiple cars on the track, but then Motorstorm is miles ahead of this game.
