Dead Space Extraction revealed for Wii

New story, content, co-op, controls.

EA will release a Wii version of Dead Space this autumn; one that has been specially built and has a whole new scary story to unravel.

The game, subtitled Extraction, will be a prequel to Dead Space from last year, and be developed by the same EA studio.

We're promised top notch FPS motion-sensing controls as well as co-operative multiplayer.

Story-wise, we'll be introduced to a woman who becomes a mining colony's only hope for survival once a mysterious contagion spreads across the ship. We're told there will be plenty more weapons, enemies, characters and puzzles to uncover along the way.

Dead Space was released last October on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and divided opinion. Whereas we saw the spooky shooter as nothing revolutionary, rather a lot of you disagreed.

Head over to our Dead Space review to find out more.

I'll definitely be watching this one carefully.

    Co-op multiplayer?!?

Could this possibly signify the chance of co-op being patched into the 360 and PS3 versions?

Probbably not, but I shall cross my fingers and toes.

I can see this one working very well on the Wii since the graphics are fairly dark anyway so the lower resolution and textures shouldn't be that noticeable. Shooting tentacles off the creatures with the Wiimote would be a lot easier than with a controller. I hope it works out, god knows, the Wii could do with some decent games.
  • OldK1ngCole #4 3 years ago

Loved the original on X360, it's in my top 5 games of last year in-fact.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

If it turns out to be as good as the original i definently will buy this.
  • Colonelkurtz #6 3 years ago

Yeah, this could absolutely be interesting. Even though it's gonna be a step down in graphic, that's really no reason why they shouldn't be able to improve the gameplay. Cutter-gameplay using the wiimote seems like a reason in itself for this game to exist
  • Goffee #7 3 years ago

What with this and HotD: Overkill, Wii game shelves are about to get 0.3% scarier for family shoppers
  • jack_klugman #8 3 years ago

    Its an on rails shooter.
  • merkdot #9 3 years ago

you weren't promised top-notch FPS controls at all you liars.

    it's an on-rails shooter.
  • CallousB #10 3 years ago

I'm quite happy at it being a new on-rails game (better that than a downgraded port of the original).
Telekinesis is in this version as well so that should be fun with the pointer (i've been waiting for one of the Wii lightgun games to do somethng more than simply point and shoot).
  • AllenSpawn #11 3 years ago

. Whereas we saw the spooky FPS as nothing revolutionary

    surely you mean TPS.
didn't see no FPS in the magnificent game i played*

*quick, call the double negative police.

Excellent - still haven't played Dead Space yet but this is how Wii versions of existing franchises should be done! If you can't match the graphics and physics etc, then build a game well-suited to what the Wii does very well.
  • Xerx3s #14 3 years ago

    Heh. No screenshots then?
  • Skeletor #15 3 years ago

As always lots of people coming up with uninformed guesses and kneejerk reactions.
The interview on IGN makes it perfectly clear that it WON'T be the kind of arcade-style on rails shooter like Overkill.
It will feature puzzles and weapon upgrades. They use a guided camera (=guided movement) to make the game more cinematic which could result in some pretty effective shock tactics.

Ahh, 'guided movement' absolutely nothing like 'on rails' then.

    I'm glad that's cleared up.
  • Razorus #17 3 years ago

Hmm, actually sounds pretty interesting. +1 to Chris' comment.

    @wastelander

Learn how to read, kid. I never said it's not on rails. It's simply not your typical arcade style House of the Dead thing. People are jumping on the "on rails = no buy" train without thinking about the advantages of a guided/ on rails camera.
The reason why many horror films are much more effective than games in the scare tactics department is the simple fact that the makers have always full control over what the viewer sees onscreen.
It's a different take on the concept of action oriented survival horror that deserves a chance.

    @verticalstand

"Steve: Extraction is not your typical Rail Shooter. Our goal is to innovate and push the genre forward like Dead Space did for third-person action survival horror."
Doesn't really sound like Overkill to me. Don't think it was a smart decision to write "in the style of House of the Dead: Overkill" under one of the screenshots when they clearly HAVEN'T PLAYED the game yet...

    At least it's not minigames.
  • GamesConnoisseur #21 3 years ago

On rail if done as well as HOTD Overkill or FPS like Metroid but minus the platforming, I m happy bloke!

Dead Space was one of my fav game of 2008 and indeed a good franchise to build on, and should have enough backstory for further plot developments.
  • Wildsleven #22 3 years ago

ah ffs, prequal? me wants ;(
please release it on ps3 or xbox!!
  • Wastelander #23 3 years ago

It's OK Skeletor, I get it.
It's totally not "on rails" it's a "guided camera" which is obviously a totally different thing altogether.

What was I thinking? They are literally worlds apart.
That'll sure teach me to jump in without thinking.
  • Evolution #24 3 years ago

Killer7 was "on rails" but it was still amazingly awesome.
  • JohnnyWashnGo #25 3 years ago

Just seen the video of this and it looks really quite good.

I really bought into the whole Dead Space thing last year, comics, anime, games so I guess I'll be getting this as well.
  • Eraser #26 3 years ago

    Interesting this.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Space on XBox 360. It may not have been revolutionary, but everything it did, it did well.
  • Skeletor #27 3 years ago

    @Wastelander
"It's OK Skeletor, I get it."
Are you sure? The rest of your comment doesn't like it...
As Evolution hinted at Killer7 you seem to forget that on rails doesn't automatically mean "meh, just another House of the Dead rip off". You do jump to conclusions very early.

So far, EVERY product in the DS franchise (comic book mini series, animation feature) was handled with the same high demand for quality. None of it was revolutionary but everything was very solid and true to the strenghts of the medium. My guess is this will also be the case with this game.

  • Wastelander #28 3 years ago

Yeah, I've totally being saying it's the same as House of the Dead in all my posts, your reading comprehension is truly astounding.

It's a good job EA has people like you on the internets to defend its good name.
  • FogHeart #29 3 years ago

"Steve: Extraction is not your typical Rail Shooter. Our goal is to innovate and push the genre forward like Dead Space did for third-person action survival horror."

Hopefully that means more than just on-rails-with-a-dismemberment-strategy. And they can't do a rail shooter without a HUD...can they?

I can't think of anything else in Dead Space that was revolutionary to the TPS genre.

  • Skeletor #30 3 years ago

    @Wastelander
Lol, you're right. You didn't say it's just a rip off... but then, what actually did you say? Seems you have some kind of a problem with me calling it "guided" and not "on rails" but besides that your posts are devoid of any constructive criticism.
Btw, I'm not defending EA's good name at all. All DS products were very solid, that's a simple fact. Talking about "reading comprehension"...
  • smelly #31 3 years ago

    1. it's not on rails. On rails means you have no movement, and the game carries you along as if you were.. (you've got it) on rails. You have "guided" movement control in this game, so it's no on rails. Case in point.. Mirrors edge was first person, it had "guided" movement (i.e. you couldnt really stear away from the set path) - but no-one says that's "on rails"
    2. a FPS is a game where you shoot things in first person. This is a game played in first person where you shoot things.

Therefor it's a FPS.. End of discussion

This game never interested me for the ps3 but I might get it on wii if they nail the controls. Metroid prime 3 controls ftw!
  • Wastelander #33 3 years ago

You could move in Panzer Dragoon, have a choice of paths in the HOTD series and were very much 'guided' in Killer 7.
    They were all on-rails.

What's wrong with on rails exactly? Rez, Panzer Dragoon, HOTD: Overkill and Killer 7 were all rather good if I recall.

Funny how it seems to be some kind of offensive phrase and for whatever silly reason the defense force starts getting all het-up over any perceived slight.

    Fascinating.
  • N.A.T.O #34 3 years ago

I detect a lot of anger. Lets judge a game on how well it plays rather than make assumptions. IF it's on rails then so what? A game is good BECAUSE it's good (think about it). Whether it's on rails or not is irrelevant.
  • smelly #35 3 years ago

    >EA will take note and turn this into an FPS.

    it already is a fps.
  • Vin #36 3 years ago

    ..On rails.

    Lord, give me strength.

    Hmmm...

I love Dead Space and I loved the universe they created in it (reminds me I MUST start impossible mode). When they announced DS on Wii my ears pricked up (even as an unimpressed ex Wii owner), but the trailer shows me an on rails shooter. Not what I want from a DS game (although I do see the irony in that remark as a lot of the game is shooting!)

It's just not what I want from that series. I want to wander through at my own pace terrified of every door opening. I dunno it's kind of like, making Resident Evil into a arcade shooter, it just won't work........

"@Smelly only if you include games like the Resident Evil: Survivor series as FPS games... "

    FPS = First Person Shooter

Is this in First Person? Yes
    Is it a Shooter? Yes

Well it's a fucking FPS then!

    sheesh
  • smelly #40 3 years ago

"Resident Evil: Survivor series as FPS games... "

Besides.. we know next to NOTHING about it .. Survivor you couldnt control your movement.. and the makers say quite clearly that in this game you can.

Just because something is LIKE something else doesnt mean it IS something else..

Lets wait and see shall we?
  • Dazza360 #41 3 years ago

@ Skeletor "They use a guided camera (=guided movement)"

I've got Overkill which allows you to move or "guide" the camera up, down, left and right i'd say roughly 30degrees. How do we know that this isn't what DSE is also doing where the Executive Producer in the interview said "Our gameplay takes advantage of a guided and cinematic camera..." ?

As far as I managed to read into it, the game might not have any "guided movement" at all. Also, Overkill also has weapon upgrades and after reading through the interview, it doesn't sound that different to Overkill, which i'm happy about having played and finished both Dead Space on PS3 and Overkill.

Eh? Did you play survivor Smelly? You moved were you wanted to in the game.

Another developer feeling the need to dumb down a game for the Wii. When will they learn?
  • peak_performance #45 3 years ago

Casually optimistic for now, I loved Killer7 after all. Haven't played Dead Space though.

The thing that matters most is if it's an honest attempt at a good game.
  • Dan234 #46 3 years ago

Surprised nobody's mentioned minigames yet, if we're making up shit as we go along.
  • Sean.Aaron #47 3 years ago

"Another developer feeling the need to dumb down a game for the Wii."

How? Do most games require a degree to play them? Must be why I got better at games after university...thanks for clearing that up.

Oh and good call Dan. I cannot wait to get my hands on the Dead Dance Revolution mini-rhythm game where you shoot zombies to the beat!

  • smelly #48 3 years ago

    >Did you play survivor Smelly? You moved were you wanted to in the game.

Erm (looks all embarrased) erm.. no.. just presumed you couldnt because people said it was "on rails"

if you can.. then they're talking crap about that too!
  • Silent-Hal #49 3 years ago

Cue another neutering of a successful 360/PS3 franchise on the Wii. A rail shooter? Seriously? It's like they're not even trying. At least make it somewhat resemble the original game. RE4 worked perfectly fine on the Wii, so why not a real Dead Space conversion? I don't see the point of making it a prequel either, since most/all of the important backstory has already been told in the comics series and Downfall.
  • smelly #50 3 years ago

@Silent-Hal: Oh seriously.. just shut the fuck up until you've seen more than a 30 second fucking trailer for it.
  • Silent-Hal #51 3 years ago

The things I'm complaining about, the game's genre and it being a prequel, had nothing to do with the trailer at all. Stop being so defensive about a piece of fucking software.
