Avary talks Wolfenstein film
Toned down for big-screen.
Hollywood director Roger Avary has been chatting about his big-screen take on Wolfenstein.
Talking to Ain't It Cool News, he said the film probably won't be the same as the games, but that's because he has real-life constrictions to worry about. As long as he remains true to the spirit of the game and blows things up - like Nazis - then he thinks we'll all be happy.
"Whenever someone whines to me about breaking canon...I remind them that the book, video game, or poem will always exist in its original form for their enjoyment, but that a movie has special needs and compromises that occur due to a variety of real-world constrictions," said Avary.
We're told there will be an over-the-top style with a pinch of reality, with most, but not all of the action taking place in the iconic castle.
But there's no word on who will be starring, although Avary suggests he's looking for less well-known European talent, and mused that "All one needs to do is look at the box art on the Return to Castle Wolfenstein game and you can see who I see in my mind for the role".
It's Jason Statham! Wait, no, Jeremy Irons! Oh we don't know. You try.
Avary's Wolfenstein film is due out sometime next spring. A release date for the Castle Wolfenstein game is yet to be confirmed, although we know it will definitely won't be this year.

And I have no doubt that the budget for this movie would easily stretch to cover his salary.

Where Eagles Dare + The Keep = Wolfenstein Movie.
At least in terms of tone. Whether it could reach the level of quality of either of those movies is another question.

Either he means it won't have all sorts of locations like submarine bases and airfields full of experimental planes (like RTCW), or it won't have some of the most ridiculous things out of the original Wolf3d games like ending with a gunfight against a cyborg Hitler.

It's clearly The Rock, already a veteran of the game turned film genre.
Picture him dressed as a soldier, and (for those who remember the original Wolfenstein game) his face bears a not too uncanny resemblance to the character portrait at the bottom of the screen.
"I wonder what he means by "real-world constrictions"? "
He means that he can't actually gun down real Nazis in a castle, instead he has to use actors and special effects.
Spoils the realism a bit admittedly.

Film has potential actually, I'm easily pleased though - a few Nazi's shouting "It'z ze ameriken!" and I'll be happy.

By "ridiculous", I assume you mean "best"?

I think you may have uncovered the eternal dichotomy of game-to-film adaptations there. The cyborg Hitler gunfight would please the hardcore early 90s shooter fans, but I doubt Roger Ebert and his colleagues would be singing its praises.

He is badass, can crack out one timers and he looks good with a gun.

He should get UB in to give him a helping hand.

The film took all the set pieces and ideas of the Games, and remixed them into a movie. After all, you can't say all Silent Hill games are identical, they are only 'grouped' together by the ideas, setting and ambient.
Personally I think he got it right, It was horrifying, gruesome, bloody and the pace of it was quite right.
