inFamous: Second Son update lets you change the time of day

And cap the frame rate at 30fps.

Sucker Punch's latest open-world superhero epic inFamous: Second Son will be receiving an update in a couple of weeks with some pretty unique options.

As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, the biggest of these is the ability to change the time of day. This option is only enabled once you've finished the campaign, as the climate is locked in place to convey a mood that suits the narrative - as it was in the first two inFamous games. But once you've completed that, there's no reason to restrict it for players.

There's also an option to turn off the HUD, which is mostly catered towards those who want to take pretty screenshots of its impressive replica of Seattle.

Finally, you'll be able to cap the frame rate at 30fps, something Eurogamer contributor John Linneman recommended in his Digital Foundry analysis of Second Son.

"The choice to ship with an unlocked frame-rate has a rather negative impact on the game," wrote Linneman. "While performance generally manages to stay north of 30fps, the resultant judder compromises the fluidity of the visuals and produces inconsistent controller response. With Second Son averaging around 35fps, the player receives little additional benefit as a result of this choice. By limiting the frame-rate to 30fps they could have delivered an open world game with a very consistent frame-rate and controller response. Instead we're left to endure a near-constant judder and unstable performance throughout."

It's good to hear Sucker Punch is listening, though the developer noted that it's still a bigger fan of the unlocked frame rate, which will remain the default. "Internally we prefer the unlocked frame rate, but we recognise that a group of players find the unlocked frame rate very distressing," said Sucker Punch co-founder and producer Brian Fleming. "So we'll provide a way to ensure the game is not bumping up over 30fps if that's how you prefer to play."
